Why Not Associates and Gordon Young have scooped the Grand Prix at the Tokyo Type Directors Club Awards 2012 (the third time the UK studio has won it in the awards’ 25 year history) for the Comedy Carpet project which we featured in our October issue…
The awards received a total of 3,289 entries of which 2,265 were from Japanese entrants, and 1,024 were from entrants from around the world. Other winners include M/M Paris, Rick Banks, Martin Borst, and the Shueitai Development Department of the Dai Nippon Printing Co…

In case you missed our feature a few issues ago, the Comedy Carpet is a huge, 1,720 square metre typographic art installation that lies between Blackpool Tower and the seafront across the road. It celebrates Blackpool’s rich and unique comedy heritage and is made up of approximately 180,000 letters carved from Indian granite and set in specially formulated bright white concrete. The work features monologues, gags, punchlines and catchphrases uttered by hundreds of comedians from Britain and beyond who have performed at Blackpool over the years. TDC prizes were handed out to five projects including M/M(Paris) work for Björk’s Biophilia CD artwork, book and iPad application (still shown above). Masashi Kawamura, Qanta Shimizu, Saqoosha and Yuri Morimoto were awarded for their work on the interactive music video for track Bell by Androp (Warner Music Japan) in which the user controls a horse made up of letterforms as it gallops through various landscapes, besieged by various beasts (still, shown above). Rick Banks‘ Bella typeface picked up quite an impressive number of comments when we posted about it here on the CR blog back in July last year, and it picked up a TDC award (numerals shown above) – as did Germany’s Martin Borst for his Mondra type design (below)
The Dai Nippon Printing Co’s Shueitai Development Department also picked up a prize for it’s project to renew Shueitai for the Heisei era, image below:

A “special prize” ent to Shin Sobue and Hidenori Yoshioka for their design of book Kinoko Bungaku Meisakusen (above), published by MinatoNoHito.
The RGB prize went to to Taeko Isu + Gabin Ito + Yosuke Hayashi + Takuma Miyamoto for their work on the website and CD sleeve of artist Kuchiroro’s album (above is one of the artworks from the CD sleeve). Visit the website here.
Alexander Gelman picked up the Book Design prize for books produced for Sequencer and Dutch type foundry Underware took the Type Design prize for it’s custom handwriting font, Mr Porter, created for the website Mr Porter:
