Underground Bin

The KUKI-BIN satisfies our inherent urge to kick things around. It’s a garbage bin that is placed underground, allowing you to not only thrown rubbish into the pit but also kick stuff in for a good measure. It basically just makes the act of cleaning your streets a bit more playful and even encouraging the kids to participate. Love It!

Hide your ugly AC unit!

Designers Daniel LiCalzi & Paul Genberg got sick of looking at all of the ugly air conditioners sticking out of people’s windows in the summer, so they’ve created this clever cover that gives the unit a makeover! Babilawn, inspired by the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, allows the user to express their own personal style in the form of a mini lawn fit with a tiny white picket fence, daisies, and even a garden gnome! It instantly turns an eye sore into an adorable window ornament!

Babilawn is lightweight, easy to install, and fits any air conditioner! It comes in three sizes each made up of multiples of a single 7.5″ x 10.5″ grass section. Each section has it’s own super strong rare earth magnet that keeps it secured to the top the the air conditioner. This keeps each grass section lightweight and allows Babilawn to be arranged to fit any size air conditioner. Fod odd-size units, Babilawn can be cut down to size with a regular pair of scissors. To avoid overheating or mold growth, each grass section is raised approximately 1 inch off the top of the AC to allow proper ventilation.

Obvious TAXI Station

How about a taxi stand that offers a waiting lounge, office space, personal cabins for drivers, lavatory, changing room, storage area, kitchen and resting area! Sounds utopia but plausible, thanks to the universal language and modern architecture incorporated. Electrical and lighting systems are assembled within the installation floor, which is hidden, between ceiling and the roof. Moreover a system is in place to collect rainwater and use it within the infrastructure. Very Impressive!

Fiber Logic

Proposed for NYC’s historical Battery Park, the ALIS bench serves as both commodity and art. Lightweight & durable, the ergonomic sections are constructed through the process of renewable resource plastic injection molding, common in the structuring of urban playground equipment. Using unique “fiber logic” reinforcement, ALIS efficiently redistributes external forces through its composite skin system. As night falls, each section illuminates from within to reveal a beautiful web of the fibrous internal strands.

ALIS efficiently redistributes external forces through its composite skin system. This skin system maintains a constant surface enclosure thickness while responding to areas of higher impact stress by the integration of fiber bundles. The networking of these bundles comes together to form deeper cross sections in material thickness thus providing optimum structural integrity. Subversive by day, these strands emerge as the sun sets to establish an alternate formal dimension.

Streamlining The Traffic Signal

Kayseri is a culturally rich city, located in the heart of Turkey. Commissioned by the municipality, Art Lebedev Studio has developed this modular traffic light design for them. As a scaled down version, this compact light fits perfectly in a progressive atmosphere. As a key innovative feature, the bottom display features text backing up the main color signals.

The signal panels and displays are made of LED clusters and the back of the traffic light features an extra display. The body is one solid cast piece and this makes it cost effective and easy to maintain.

Stealth Pavillion

The Stealth Pavillion is based on the concept of heterotopia, which describes spaces of “otherness” that are neither here nor there, simultaneously physical & mental, such as the space of a phone call or the moment when you see yourself in the mirror. To express this complexity, the exterior of the design takes inspiration from the radar-reflective form of the F-117 Stealth fighter. The simple, warm wooden interior with fire-pit contrasts this to create a feeling of isolation despite the pavilion being open-aired.

Bird Feeder, Sofas And More…

Polish designer Jan Kochański showcased his studio projects to us and we simply loved his unique take on furniture and product design. I loved the simple yet artistically developed Fiu Fiu bird feeder and the MobiUse – mass use mobile chairs made from paper pulp. Hit the jump to experience some innovative and thought provoking projects.

Designer: Jan Kochański

Clip

Clip is simple, portable and foldable coffee table, made of bended steel tubes and oak wood. The project is combination of minimal structure and maximum functionality. The frame was inspired by a paper clip; table top can serve separately as a tray.

Radar

Radar is a visually attractive alternative for cloth dryers. It is constructed out of bended steel tubes and each part can be rotated separately.

Fiu Fiu

Fiu Fiu is a foldable bird feeder made of PP foil. It can be easily shipped in an A4 envelope and quickly assembled in few moves.

Spring

Spring is a bracelet available in two different sizes and colors (red, grey sparkle). Made with laser sintered nylon or alumide, it features a complex yet charming “spring” shape, suitable for both men and women.

MobiUse

MobiUse is an armchair designed for mass usage. It is made of paper pulp and can be used in and out doors.

Cloud

Cloud is light soft and sensitive and is in constant and slow motion, because of the hot air provided by hairdryer. Cloud is made of delicate foil. The project is about searching for minimal gestures that can define space, and looking for border between interior and exterior.

Knot

The Knot armchair is made of fiberglass rope and synthetic resin. The rope wrapped around solid shape creates chaotic and light structure.

Pufff

This design is a result of experiments with sheet materials. The armchair is formed out of two pieces of PP foam and the biggest challenge was to design a rigid structure out of a relatively soft material.

Cocoon

Cocoon is a hammock made of PP foam and synthetic fabric. The design can transform from open hanging bed into a zipped cozy cocoon.

We Need This Parking Meter NOW!

It can’t get sexier and easier than the PARKd! Here is a parking meter concept that is easy to operate and simply brilliant. The ensuing video is good enough to explain how it works, but very briefly, the meter accepts credit cards, coins and even syncs with a payment app on a smartphone. Simply key in your time, pay the fare and swiftly get a receipt.

Features

  • Many parking meters only accept coins, forcing the user to buy 2hrs, rather than the 1h20mins they may only need. PARKd allows you to pay for the exact time you need and not the surplus.
  • By smoothly cycling through different payment options, the user is not overwhelmed with concurrent information but is presented with individual options in a calm, timely manner.
  • If the user chooses to pay with coins, the duration of time paid for is highlighted on the listed tariff segments as well as the respective return time.
  • Once selected, the on-screen information is “collapsed” downwards to the ticket slot below.
  • Should the user wish to pay by credit card instead; they can accurately select how long they would like to stay for, what time they plan to return, or how much they would like to spend.
  • All three ways of considering the parking duration are presented together, and manipulated by turning a single dial.
  • Again, the return time is indicated on screen and printed on the ticket.
  • If the user is comfortable with new technology they can decide to pay via Contactless Payment system, selecting the time they wish to stay or the amount they are prepared to pay using their phone.
  • The parking system is able to log the selected parking duration and vehicle registration. This information is then accessible to the parking attendants on his rounds with the list of paid vehicle registration numbers.

Bed And Boat

Nest is a very playful air mattress that transforms into a zippy boat by manipulating the internal hooks. I love the visual delight that the network of red ropes and spring hooks conjure. They allow NEST’s internal structure to be changed and this can be done intuitively. You can hook and unhook ropes without needing to touch them directly; for the air mattress just manipulate the spring hooks while fewer hooks are needed for the boat. Ahoy captain!
