Physical Graffiti: Boris Tellegen

2.jpg

Although Core77 doesn’t usually cover pieces that are strictly “art,” Boris Tellegen’s sculptures draw heavily from both architecture and design. Dutch artist Tellegen aka DELTA was a pioneer of the European graffiti scene in the 1980’s. His sculptures are the unison of physical versions of his graffiti tags and expertly drafted architectural drawings.

Evelio Mattos’ Squeeze Box Packaging

0evmattos01.jpg

Evelio Mattos is the Creative Director of Design Packaging Inc., and the designer is self-admittedly obsessed with paper folding. “If the concept allows me to organically incorporate folded paper into a concept, I will,” he writes.

Unfortunately, most of the time those concepts work their way out of the final piece due to pricing constraints or material limitations in the mass production environment. But, not this time. Built completely out of folding board, the squeeze box concept developed for Auberge du Soleil Napa Valley is 100% recyclable. The hand-made truffles are well protected by the internal divider which moves with the box and allows for optimal product display.

0evmattos02.jpg

My first thought was, it seems cool from an experiential perspective–you press the “accordion” down and the truffles basically present–but wasteful from a materials perspective due to all of the extra paper folds. But as Mattos points out the stuff is 100% recycleable, so we can get behind it with a clear conscience.

East London Outdoor Cinema Made From Dead Refrigerators

0FoF01.jpg

Loving this idea: Films on Fridges is “East London’s newest temporary outdoor cinema built primarily out of discarded fridges.”

0FoF03.jpg

The idea was inspired by “Fridge Mountain,” a pile of discarded refrigerators so large it was visible on Google Maps (see photo above). London city officials had the Mountain carted off during the cleanup for the 2012 Olympics, and the largely anonymous team of volunteers behind Film on Fridges decided it was time to assemble another one, this time assembled into something large enough to project movies onto.

Form follows…your move

alessiamazzarella_chess1.jpgThere’s probably more beautiful/minimal/witty chess set concepts floating around design blogs than there are people actually still playing the game these days. Nevertheless—graphic design student Alessia Mazzarella’s functional set made the Dieter in us smile.

Just in case the concept isn’t entirely self explanatory—the shape of each piece is intended to represent its movement, perfect for learning the game:

Judging a (Mac)Book by its Cover

0bookbook01.jpg

I suffer from that object fetish schizophrenia where I’m taken by very new things and very old things. Sketching on an iPad is awesome, and so is laying ink in a Moleskine. On my desk I’ve got a stack of rare internal documents from the Singer company circa 1920 or so, and it’s being fed into a Canon scanner from 2010. I use a zig-zag sewing machine from 1953 and I use brand-new Schmetz needles that have the modern “scarf” cut into them.

0bookbook02.jpg

Mac accessory-maker Twelve South’s BookBook perfectly encapsulates the old/new thing. It’s a laptop case taking the form of an ancient leatherbound book, offering both protection and scratching that vintage itch.

Dispensable Design: Karim’s "Pebble" & Hiro’s Origami

dispense-with-me.jpg
This month saw the release of the Karim Rashid × 3M (yes, that one) “Pebble” Post-It and tape dispensers. Rashid recently summed it up for the New York Times:

I wanted to get out of the idea that these objects are pretty utilitaria. When you have them on your desk, they’re really just nice and comfortable and kind of quiet. They have a personality, but they’re soft.

While the whimsical design is hardly a departure for the ultraprolific designer, they certainly add a bit of pizzazz to the matte black (and brushed aluminum) hegemony of most office environments. (Admit it, you spend the better part of your day staring at the myriad handheld denizens of your workspace too.)

Flotspotting: Jorge Diego Etienne Looks Down the Barrel of Creativity

0jorgediego01.jpg

Monterrey, Mexico-based Jorge Diego Etienne’s “Choose Your Bullets” are art tool holders that look like huge revolver barrels. We initially figured Etienne was making a statement along the lines of Make art not war, but his intent is a bit more complicated:

Your pen can be more harmful than a gun. Choose your bullets is a desk accesory that reminds us that corruption and bad decisions can be more harmful than violence. This self-produced project was aimed at creating a product that would empower our decisions and reconsider the choices we make and the effects they have.

Etienne’s also got some cool process shots of the things being milled:

Design Meets Religion: Studio Dror’s SoHo Synagogue

0sohosynag01.jpg

For the past few months, during nightly dog walks I’ve been passing an under-renovation place on Crosby Street with a big sign that said “Coming Soon: SoHo Synagogue.” Last month they finally took the paper off the glass, revealing a very modern, barcode-like pattern on the windows that I wouldn’t expect of a religious institution. I wondered if it would be similarly design-ey inside.

Now I know. Turns out it’s none other than Studio Dror that was behind the design, and the interior is even cooler than the facade.

0sohosynag02.jpg

A glass table with QuaDror feet mans the reception area, and the below-ground sanctuary area is a classic SoHo, beautifully raw industrial space made stylishly warmer with Edison bulbs.

Yacht Designs Worth a King’s Ransom

0yaisde01.jpg

Earlier this week we posted some of our favorite designer-friendly yachts from Wally Yachts. This post is for Core77’s burgeoning Somali pirate readership. Fellas, have we got some exciting design news for you: A UK-based company called Yacht Island Design is working on a host of enticing concepts for gorgeous, innovative and most importantly slow-moving pleasure craft.

0yaisde02.jpg

Their Streets of Monaco yacht concept lets you stroll the byways of the fabled principality like a lucky gambler, sidestepping go-karts buzzing around the actual on-board racetrack. You’ve heard of the Grand Prix, and once you take this boat, you can try it!
