If the shape looks familiar (maybe even scary!), it’s because the Paraboloid Lamp takes the striking shape of the hyperbolic geometric surface you probably saw in your algebra classes. A single globe is nestled in the center of a saddle-like grid of skew lines, creating a diffused glow that moves with the elegant curvature of the structure and peeks through the rhomboidal spaces. The version pictured here teeters on a solid base but flipped it might make an interesting pendant centerpiece.

The Acorn by Vasiliy Butenko transforms an ordinary cotton rope into an attractive, simple and inexpensive pendant lamp. The construction process is quick and easy an only requires the rope, a bottle and a bonding agent. The rope is wound around the bottle creating layers that don’t require an internal frame. Bright LEDs provide concentrated light that won’t burn the cotton. In a number of dark colors, it’s both soft and masculine.

Unlike most desk lamp designs with shades that open in the direction of the light, the Flower Barb features a combination of sleek plates that extend backward from the apex. At the center point is a focused LED that’s perfect for working under. The result is a sort of floral aesthetic with a surprising, directional light; however, I’d love to see the 4 plates able to be adjusted in the opposite direction so the user can switch between ambient glow and focused light.

This LED street lamp design is centered around 3 compact, flat, versatile LED modules that have a minimal impact on the visible skyline. The modules can be raised and lowered depending on necessity and are easily replaceable for quick maintenance. The minimal design is a nice alternative to today’s dull street lamp styles and is applicable to a variety of installations from sidewalks to racetracks.

The KUGL light transforms the idea of lighting in the form of stationary objects into a mobile system of induction-charged units with an adorably unorthodox globe shape. Each ball features a flat, magnetic surface on it’s lower hemisphere that allows it to be mounted on any metal surface and twisted to achieve the desired directional light. After use, simply throw it on the docking station until it’s needed again. Genius!
