Bright and Buzzworthy

The insect-inspired Swarm lighting series introduces playful illumination in the form of clustered, wasp-shaped pendants that feel like a colony suspended in motion! With distinct Scandinavian design quality, their simple composition of glass, metal, and elegant woodcraft hearkens back to a simpler time when the creative process was just as important as the end product.

In Love With The Sonneman Quattro

We’ve reviewed our share of LED task lamps but our latest procurement, the Sonneman Quattro, evokes a kind of playful spirit normally reserved for Luxo, the Pixar Lamp. The lamp is immaculately engineered. The aforementioned playful spirit comes from the retangular arm that articulates at multiple points. It freely rotates 90º at the base with two additional pivot points across the arm. Devoid of any discernable switches, the lamp is switched on by a feather’s touch above the LED plate. Tapping it multiple times cycles through 3 brightness settings.

I’m not at all surprised by the fit and finish. Designed by Robert Sonneman, a name many of you design enthusiasts will be familiar with, a force in lighting design for over 40 years. It’s the attention to detail that really struck me. For example, the lighting elements consists of a flat LED plate that throws an even warm light. Most other lamps use an array of LEDs. Not to say one is better than the other, it’s just different and that’s why I like the Quattro.

The Quattro is available in bright satin aluminum, white, black and a red/yellow/black combination which is the one I received. It’s particularly special because the rectilinear forms and coloring serves up Mondrian and Rietveld – true modernists. The lamp retails for $575 with an estimated lamp life of 50,000 hours.

Designer: Robert Sonneman and Peter Polick

Round Light Done Right

When it comes to lighting, there’s something about spherical white shades that just makes sense. Simple, yet expressive, they permit omnidirectional lighting and also make for a great diffuser. Creative Pill’s ORB lamps capitalize on this very character and practicality but with a twist. The table and floor lamps 3 legs appear to pierce the sphere, using it as a stabilizer for the tripodal structure. Simple and creative, they’re an easy addition to any contemporary space.

From a manufacturing and assembly point of view, the ORB is kept really simple. The 3 aluminum feet are all the same in order to cut production costs. The inner metal component keeps the whole assembly together. By screwing the feet in, the two glass halves are kept in place with no pressure on the glass component. The inner metal component also acts as support for the light bulb fixture or LED system. Access to the inner components is easily facilitated by removing the top glass sphere half which is easily removed by unscrewing the upper aluminum components.

Modern Miffy the Bright Bunny

If this rabbit looks familiar, it’s because you probably saw it as a kid, or have even seen her in your own kid’s books today! The lead character in Dutch artist Dick Bruna’s picture book series, Miffy the rabbit has been around since 1955. As old as she is, her iconic, minimal aesthetic is the epitome of timeless. This modern lamp by Story North brings new life to Miffy, further preserving the familiar fragment from many of our childhoods.

Posthumus Le Corbusier Lamp Finds Life

How amazing is this story? Listen to this. The Projecteur 365 by Le Corbusier has been selected as the winner in the “Best Reissues” category of the Wallpaper Design Awards 2013. Designed by Le Corbusier for the High Court of Chandigarh in 1954, this product remained unreleased until 2012, when it was found in the archives of the Le Corbusier Foundation in Paris.

Only a side view of the design had remained. It was therefore necessary to “rebuild” its functional aesthetic, choosing finishes and details to suit the language of shipbuilding work.

Makes me wonder what other goodies are hidden in sketchbooks and pieces of scrap paper. You know what though, this lamp is actually all kinds of gorgeous. Sure the materials are modern but those lines -that’s classic baby.

Ooo La La Lighting!

The OOO lamp derives its name from the ultra-thin, perfectly circular plate that composes its shade. The swiveling shade is made possible by using a rotary joint and dual magnets that connect the tubular arm to the top and bottom plates. The result is a a sculptural lighting object with fewer parts, straightforward assembly, and easy functionality! Simply give the shade a light press to focus the light in any direction, or position it upright to hide direct light and create an ambient glow.
