This year marks the inaugural designjunction, an exhibition of British designers that will be held in Zona Tortona in Milan, concurrently with the Salone. It will be well worth a visit to view new and never-before-seen designs from the likes of Anglepoise, ANYTHING, Benchmark, Channels, Kawamura Ganjavian, Innermost, Modus, Race Furniture, Melin Tregwynt and Wedgwood.

The space, the former Riva-Calzoni building that is now Zegna headquarters, will be art directed by none other than Michael Sodeau, who has created designs for several of the exhibitors in the past—we’re fans of ANYTHING, a collaboration Suikosha. designjunction also marks the debut of +stone, Sodeau’s most recent collaborative project with Portugal’s Sienave.

Last but not least, Roll & Hill, is the lone American among the group of esteemed UK designers. We were there when designer Jason Miller launched the brand last year, and we’re eagerly anticipating more information and images of his new work.

Suffice it to say that this will be a must-see event for anyone who will be in town for the Salone this year. More details and teaser pics after the jump →

Salone Milan 2011 Preview: D\ZEN by CTRLZAK Art & Design Studio

DZEN_by_CTRLZAK-1.jpg

Milan’s very own CTRLZAK Art & Design Studio is set to present their latest furniture design project, D\ZEN, at the Salone next month. The series alludes to Zen Buddhism as it might be fused with minimalist geometry: a stick, crafted in solid metal, supports a trapezoidal volume with a single mirrored panel to form a coffee table and matching stool.

2011MOON_004.jpg

In collaboration with the MOROSO Showroom, prolific Japanese designer Tokujin Yoshioka will be taking inspiration from the celestial with his Twilight presentation. The centerpiece of the exhibition will be Tokujin’s “Moon” chairs, seen above and as beautiful watercolor sketches below. An accompany light installation will “release infinitive light rays in the white space, creating a scene as if light breaks through the cloud.”

Check out our video interview with Tokujin from last year’s Salone here! Stay tuned for more on Salone del Mobile!

Flynn Talbot’s X&Y Lamp: A Color-Changing Light Interface in 360 Degrees

This month, Berlin-based contemporary design gallery Helmrinderknecht shows Flynn Talbot’s X&Y, a dynamic light whose color and brightness properties are controlled by the hand blown, opaque roller ball that serves as its shade. To change the hue, spin on the X-axis; to dim, spin along the Y, as demonstrated above.

The lamp is minimal in its form, so that the changing quality of light is showcased. This simplicity, however, hides the sophisticated and compact technical resolution of the object—all controls and lighting elements are contained within the brass base, pictured below. Reminds us of the rollerballs on now outdated computer mice.

Flynn Talbot is based in Perth, Australia, where he specializes in lighting installation design. See X&Y at Helmrinderknecht through March 26, 2011.

Camper comes to Covent Garden.

Tomas Alonso_camper store_london_002.jpgPhotographs by Sanchez y Motoro

In London, Covent Garden is the place to go for boutique shoe shops — there are stores from the Natural Shoe Co., Poste Mistress and Birkenstock. For a long time the area has been home to a small Camper shop down an alleyway, tucked away from the main foot traffic of Neal Street.

Just before Christmas, Camper added to their presence in the area and opened a brand new store on a prominent corner, designed by Tomas Alonso. Alongside beautiful tables and benches constructed using Alonso’s particular language of bright tubular structures and wooden planes, there are specially designed ceramic lightshades and (my favourite) a very interesting exercise in tiles and perspective.

The Covent Garden branch is just one in a series of five stores that the Spanish company asked Alonso to design, the next one, in Glasgow is due to open very soon.

Ezri Tarazi’s Furniture Keeps it "Close to Home"

kalab06.jpg

Jerusalem-based professor and industrial designer Ezri Tarazi keeps it close to home in his new show at the Paradigma Gallery in Tel Aviv. The exhibition, Kalab is Isreali army slang for “close to home.” The work is inspired by, “home objects made of battle souvenirs, such as vases made of bomb shells and ashtrays made of bullet shells,” that are often found in Isreali civilian spaces. “Media Force,” a shelving unit made of used ammunition boxes and “SoftReventment,” a sofa constructed of sandbags clearly reflect Tarazi’s intention.

The home becomes a “closed military zone” that in its comfort can diminish the natural defense mechanism. This exhibition raises the questions of security, anxiety, home and sense of security, at times when soldiers and civilians play equal part in the confrontation. This could be the confrontation with our enemies or the confrontation within us, between our primal behaviors and the tamed ones.

Stockholm Design Week 2011: 20Designers@Biologiska

20designers_spoonrabbit_stockholm2011.jpg

We’re in the Swedish capital this week to take a peek at the design goings-on during Stockholm Design Week 2011.

First stop was last night’s opening of the 20Designers@Biologiska exhibition on show, somewhat bizarrely, at the city’s biological museum. Normally the reserve of taxidermalogical dioramas, the ever-so quaint Biologiska Museum has been invaded by designers setting their works free amongst the wildlife (above “Flair” teaspoon by Swedish designer Jessica Kalleskog).
