Alon Karpman’s TRON Inspired Skatecycle

Screen shot 2010-12-13 at 12.52.35 AM.png
As we count down the final days to the theatrical film release of Disney’s long awaited sequel, Tron Legacy, we continue bringing you the latest in Tron inspired designs. This latest one comes from Alon Karpman, the IDSA IDEA award winning creator of The Freerider skate cycle, a hub-less two wheeled self-propelling skate-a-ma-thing currently in production. Alon, a Brooklyn based design entrepreneur and overall kid-at-heart, couldn’t resist the opportunity to create a one-off tribute from his best-selling skatecycle using colors and glow-in-the-dark elements reminiscent of Tron’s signature light cycle.

Constantly tinkering and improving his product, Alon’s describes this one-off as being the product of a “nerdgasm” over the new film’s release. The celebrated fantasy vehicle known as the light cycle has no less given birth to thousands of sketchbooks, and hardcore sci-fi fans alike. We applaud Alon for being brave and resourceful enough to take those naive futuristic thumbnail drawings and renderings, and actually having gone off to develop a working product and company born from excitement and imagination.

If you haven’t seen the original skatecycle, check out photos of early prototypes and videos of it in action after the jump. There might also be a video of a light cycle race if you have no idea what we’re talking about.

It’s Small-Time: USB Battleship

When we first saw the USB Battleship, our immediate response was WANT! – so we had to make sure to include it in this year’s Ultimate Gift Guide. While sadly lacking the capability to let us actually play Battleships against our USB devices, the USB Battleship’s long base still provides plenty of support for up to 5 USB connections at once. Hopefully the aircraft carrier and destroyer versions are coming soon.

It’s Small-Time: Stainless Steel Sharpie

Since the point of a Sharpie is to be a “permanent” marker, its about time they made one you’ll want to hold on to for a while. The Stainless Steel Sharpie has a slightly longer grip and nice heft to it, plus it’s reusable (you can screw in new ink cartridges to change the color or refill it), making this a trusty tool for your kit rather than an just another disposable marker.

It’s Small-Time: Itazura Coin Bank

If just the idea of a puppy or kitty hiding in a fruit box to steal your coins isn’t already enough to make you melt, then either your heart’s made of coal or you’d better prepare to be shop-vacc’d off the floor of your studio after watching this!

(Actually, I’m more partial to the chihuahua Itazura Coin Banks, but that’s because I’ve got one asleep in my lap right now.)

It’s Small-Time: Tongue Bookmark

Another simple concept with a great execution from Studio Ve is featured in this year’s Gift Guide: the Tongue Bookmark. Instead of a dramatic reminder sticking out of your books to mentally nag you about what you’ve left undone, this welcoming little wedge of beech wood invites you back in with a smile.

It’s Small-Time: Wooden Bottle Opener

gg-entries-bottleopener.png

Sure, anyone can hammer a bent nail into a chunk of wood and pry open bottles with it. But the reason this Wooden Bottle Opener is available at the MOMA store is because it takes an artist like Brendan Ravenhill to not only make sure the handle’s made from beautiful walnut wood, but also add magnets to catch the cap AND attach it to your refrigerator! Now that’s design.

Why Design Now: Solving Energy and Healthcare Challenges

The Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt’s recent Why Design Now conference held this past October brought together an optimistic collective of bright and ambitious designers whose efforts are shaping how we solve some of today’s most challenging human and social problems. The dominant conference theme which openly questions design’s relevance in a time of expanding global crisis, gave speakers and panelists the opportunity to share attempts and discoveries where design has made impacting difference through innovative approaches.

Check out these two featured videos from GE which summarize some of the inspiring work of those conference participants currently engaged in problems of health care and global energy. If you missed the event, they’re definitely worth your time.
