1 Hour Design Challenge: Emergency Shelters. The entries keep rolling in!

pYou’ve still got 11 days to enter our latest a href=”http://boards.core77.com/viewtopic.php?f=35t=20712″1 Hour Design Challenge: Emergency Shelters/a. The competition asks you to design an appropriate and innovative pop-up shelter solution, in light of the earthquake in Haiti. Core77 will donate $500 in the name of the winner to Architecture for Humanity’s Earthquake Support Program./p

pBelow, two shelters that truly “pop-up” and make use of their compactness to fold in a few basic necessities. /p

div style=”align: right;”img src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/2010/02/1hdc-emergencyshelter-boxshelter.jpg” width=”468″ height=”277″ alt=”1hdc-emergencyshelter-boxshelter.jpg”//div

pstrongFrom Jurrasix/strong: The idea is a modular crate where each side individually holds first aid kits, blankets and other essentials. The box locks back together for storage and transportation. The crates would be somewhat heavy duty so they could be reused and long lasting./p

div style=”align: right;”img src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/2010/02/1hdc-emergency-waterfiltration.jpg” width=”468″ height=”303″ alt=”1hdc-emergency-waterfiltration.jpg”//div

pstrongFrom Gizmosaurus/strong: The main idea behind this entry is compactness.br /
A shelter, multipurpose bag, water cantines, blankets, towels and a water collector/filter are all contained within single shell which itself is the water collector. The strap that comes on the basin can be detached and used on the bag so that while the shelter is needed no excess material is left. The shelter works like an emergency raft (pull tab for automatic inflation) but with a breathable cloth making up the walls./p

pLook over the a href=”http://boards.core77.com/viewtopic.php?f=35t=20712″guidelines/a, sharpen your pencils, and get your entry in by February 28th!/pa href=”http://www.core77.com/blog/featured_items/1_hour_design_challenge_emergency_shelters_the_entries_keep_rolling_in__15973.asp”(more…)/a

European design policy bulletin released

design_policy_468.jpg

The second edition of the SEE bulletin has just been released. It is the only publication entirely dedicated to exploring matters related to design policies and programmes for design support.

In his contribution ‘Aspects of Design Policy in History’, Hong Kong Professor John Heskett traces the evolution of policy from images of identity to economic intervention across ancient civilisations, political regimes to present-day economic doctrines. The article ‘From 2009 to 2010: EU and Regional Design Policy Developments’ is a review of the current state of play in the EU and regional design policy debate. The bulletin also explores the imperative of modernising policy-making through comparing two different approaches to drafting policy in the US and Denmark. This edition’s case studies feature ‘Good Design Selection’ from Korea as an integral part of the government’s innovation and procurement strategy; and ‘Better by Design’ from New Zealand, a government initiative to expand the country’s economy through the successful application of design to export businesses. The bulletin also includes world design policy news from Argentina, Australia, Canada, Costa Rica, Iceland and Qatar.

SEE is an EU-funded network of eleven European partners exploring how to integrate design into regional and national innovation policies.
