Two Year Old Robocop says Happy Halloween

5118506068_d0e075b4c2_z.jpg

Easily weighing in as a top Halloween costume this year is Young Robocop. Pretty awesome! “The helmet is an old bike helmet that didn’t really fit him anymore, so I ripped out all the padding inside and glued on a piece of plastic I cut out from an old bucket to make the front visor part. The circles on the sides were orange-juice-container lids. The chest piece is made out of an empty laundry-detergent bottle and the back is made from milk jugs. The arms and legs are cobbled together out of 64-oz Trader Joe juice containers. I made the boots by gluing a bunch of plastic crap to his old rain boots. Then I painted everything metallic gray”, notes Jim, the suites maker and Young Robocop’s Dad.

Check out Sweet Juniper to see lots more pictures of Young Robo running around Detroit and posing with the Police! I smell sequel. Thanks to Tao and Lucas for the tip.

Video interview with Chris Bangle, former BMW chief of design

Chris Bangle is one of the most controversial and polarizing automotive designers of our time. Already a successful designer, at the young age of 35 he accepted the top design job at BMW, where he implemented disruptive change for seventeen years as the longest ever chief designer at the company. It is amazing how Chris took an established design language of an already successful company and convinced them to essentially do something completely different. In that time not only did BMW grow tremendously, but their new design language influenced their competitors and the entire industry, establishing them as a design leader.

Whether you love or hate the changes he influenced, or care about vehicles at all, it is easy to appreciate the insights Mr. Bangle reveals in this short video, including how he mixed design disciplines and encouraged the less conventional automotive designers to have a voice in the future of the company. I love his take at keeping marketing at a distance and how good designers can learn something by studying bad designs. He also talks about what cars he personally owns, and asks for a free car at the end…I was hoping he would be sending me the free car… a white M1 please

Wright Auctions find: 1960 Door to Door Salesman Model of Buckminster Fuller Dome

geodesic_dome.jpg
Before the internet, we had catalogs mailed to our door to entice us to buy things from home. Prior to that we had salesmen walking on foot, going from door to door, schlepping everything from the latest vacuum to… geodesic domes? When it came to selling large items like farm equipment and said domes, salesmen were equipped with accurate miniatures to help close the deal. Wright, home of some of the designer drool worthy auction lots around, just auctioned a beautiful 1960 example of one of these models in their Modern Design Auction on October 12 which sold for well over it’s estimate of $1,000-1,500 at $7,500. Apparently the modern design collectible market is going strong!

See the rest of the collection that was auctioned off here!

Thanks to Tony Meredith for the link!

See the many ways the city is trying to put itself onto the design map in Sam Dunne’s gallery of highlights, where he wonder if, in a growing sea of international design weeks, can Valencia make an impression of their own?
