Core77 Photo Gallery: ITP Spring Show 2011

ITP-Spring_2011_Gallery.png

NYU’s Spring show for the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) featured over a hundred awesome projects with a noticeable shift towards students incorporating a broader range of body parts and senses to interact with. Recent advances in the Arduino platform and Kinect hacking fueled much of the technology in prototypes built almost exclusively with 3D printing, CNC milling and laser cutting.

Take a look through the gallery for our highlights from the show and don’t miss Brett Murphy’s tabletop surround sound mixer for young children SoundStage, Minette Mangahas’ Sonic Physiognomy that uses facial scanning to create a series of musical scores based on the topography of the human face and unique patterns of the iris, and Benji Canning-Pereira’s crazy thermochromic hair gel that changes color in seconds—he thinks it’s safe.

Slighted ‘Art in the Streets’ Artist Decides to Install Work in LA MOCA Anyway

Following painted-over murals, a slew of arrests and tsk-tsks from the city, the “Art in the Streets” exhibition at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art continues to be fun to watch. Most recently, street artist Becca Midwood, whose work was originally intended to be included in the exhibition until it was pulled when the museum made a “last minute curatorial choice,” decided she still wanted to be a part of it all and took matters into her own hands. Buying a ticket and sneaking materials into her purse, she made her way to the women’s restroom to install a piece of her own. Here’s the video:

  • Nicolai Ouroussoff finds much to admire in the “Cronocaos” wrought by Rem Koolhaas and his Office for Metropolitan Architecture at New York’s New Museum. “A skilled provocateur, [Koolhaas] paints a picture of an army of well-meaning but clueless preservationists who, in their zeal to protect the world’s architectural legacies, end up debasing them by creating tasteful scenery for docile consumers while airbrushing out the most difficult chapters of history,” notes Ouroussoff, who is OK with the manifesto-ness of the exhibition, on view through June 5. “[W]hat saves it from becoming pure polemic is that Mr. Koolhaas is a first-rate architect as well as an original thinker,” he writes. “Some of the best parts of the show involve his efforts to find ways out of this mess.”

The exhibition includes two disparate works, both from 2010: “Lectori Salutem,” a retro-futuristic chrome desk that marks the intersection of streamlined modernity and machine-age craftsmanship, and “Virtue of Blue,” a chandelier “featuring 500 solar panels cut into the shapes of four different breeds of butterfly,” combining the decorative arts with contemporary functionality.
