Core77 and Design Within Reach at Internet Week NY

hq_pavilion_image.jpg

If you’re in New York this week, don’t forget to stop by and visit us at the IAC Design Lounge at Internet Week HQ! A celebration of the thriving internet industry and community in New York, IWNY is a week-long, city-wide festival of events with HQ programming at the Metropolitan Pavilion. Together with our partner Design Within Reach we’ll be providing a functional, beautiful and intelligent design venue in the center of all the action.

Stop by, grab a seat, pickup a Core77 sketchbook and follow Craighton Berman (aka fueledbycoffee) as he takes you through “Sketchnotes 101,” a visual thinking tool to explore and express complex ideas you might come across from the prime location of our lounge (or at any of the hundreds of IWNY city-wide events). Check back as we sketchnote keynote speakers like Nicholas D. Kristof (The New York Times) and Robert A. Bowman (MLB Advanced Media) and share some of the exciting new ideas that come out of the festival. We can’t wait to check out Google’s Digital Archaeology project: 28 original machines, browsers and operating systems from various ages of the Internet have been unearthed to display websites once thought lost to history.

Submit your Internet Week NY sketchnotes to us at sketchnotes[at]core77.com and we’ll post our favorites throughout the week!

Monday June 6 – Thursday June 9

Council of Fashion Designers of America to Honor Marc Jacobs with Lifetime Achievement Award

While we knew back in March that Marc Jacobs was once again in the running for this year’s Council of Fashion Designers of America‘s award for Womenswear Designer of the Year (something he won last year, as well as in 1997 and 1992), he’s likely going to go home happy regardless of another win or not. At tonight’s ceremony, held at Lincoln Center and hosted by Anderson Cooper, Jacobs is set to receive the CFDA’s lifetime achievement award, handed to him by Sofia Coppola, just one of the estimated ten million famous people who are sure to be in attendance. Jacobs told the AP, “It’s crazy. I mean, I have a lot more to do. ‘Achievement’ sounds final. I’d like to call it ‘Lifetime of achievement — and for what’s left to achieve.’ I have no intention of slowing down. I don’t rest anyway.” Personally speaking, we’re really hoping that, when he gets up to receive the award tonight, he calls out Justin Bieber for copying Jacob’s bottle design for the singer’s new perfume, but from the reports last week when that extremely important controversy flared up, Jacobs didn’t seem too bent out of shape about it, so we’re not going to hold our collective breaths.

Good Luck!

Help! (please)

I’ve got too many things on my plate right now. In fact my “plate” is more like a banquet hall of things I need to get done before we head to Renegade Brooklyn next week. Some of the to-do list is fun stuff like making swag… postcard sets and button-making. Are there any local folks who want to come by on First Thursday to help assemble things? I’ll be in the studio from 3-9pm — even if you’re able to drop by for a short while and make a few things that would be so appreciated.

I am also looking for a regular team of makers and doers, to assist in these hands-on tasks like assembly, button-making, book-making and even some sewing (for the dottie angel book.) We would meet once or twice a month at UPPERCASE over iced coffee and cookies and have a good ol’ fashioned making-things bee. The first bee will be this Sunday afternoon at 1pm. Please email me if you’re interested (janine at uppercasemagazine dot com) thank you!!!

Curiosity Club Q&A with Chris Hoffman of RYNO Motors

MAY3111_Image_04.jpg

As Hand-Eye Supply Curiosity Club quickly approaches, we thought we’d give you a little insight in to our speaker, Chris Hoffman, and his RYNO: an innovative self-balancing, one wheel, electric scooter. Chris will be speaking next Tuesday, May 31st at the Hand-Eye Supply store in Portland at 6PM.

Curiosity Club: As designer and engineer you specialize in two fields that can at times be at odds in the product development process. Do you have advice for designers and engineers on how to communicate ideas, inspiration and practicality?

Chris Hoffman: Not sure what “fields” means in this context but if you’re talking about design attributes that are at odds they might be:

a) Simplicity as opposed to useless complexity
b) Usefulness as to cost of manufacturing that feature
c) Visible quality as to real longevity

Regardless, before you start any design project you have to start with refining why you’re designing the product. How does it align with projecting the culture of the brand and how will the product compete in the market based on what features. This all has to be identified before you start the design. Otherwise there is no way to know how to tell the story. Remember, everything we buy has to entertain us, connect us to a peer group, display our position in that group and make us feel like we made the right purchase choice long before we look at the real features of the product.

.ca is a winner

Last night here in Toronto, i was happy to be a recipient of the Canadian Internet Registry Authority’s first annual Impact Award for best use of the .ca domain, small business category. It’s exciting and gratifying to know that with over 700 entrants, just four websites were recognized in four categories.

We’re on our way home again, more soon!

NY Design Week 2011: Noho Design District Photo Gallery

NYDW-2011-NoHo-Gallery.jpg

Returning for it’s second year, Noho Design District has quickly established itself as the most interesting destination on the design week calendar with tightly curated shows, a killer party, and the main venue Great Jones Lumber is a raw exhibition space to die for. Curated by Sight Unseen, there were numerous highlights including The American Design Club’s “Use Me” show, Uhuru’s “War Craft” collection, and Rich Brilliant Willing’s new large-scale “Delta” lights. It finally feels like New York’s Design Week is getting its soul back—we’re hoping the momentum continues for even for more next year!
