The Creative Connection: looking for a helper or two!

I am excited to be a panelist at The Creative Connection this September in St. Paul, Minnesota (along with some pretty amazing women such as Heather Bailey, Lilla Rogers, Molly Wizenberg, Holly Becker and so many more!) It would be a great opportunity to have an UPPERCASE booth in the marketplace, but since I can’t be everywhere at once, I am looking for a paid helper or two, local to the St. Paul area, to be UPPERCASE representatives.

Hours:
Friday, September 16 1:30pm-9:30pm
Saturday, September 17 from 10am-6pm

To apply, please email janine@uppercasemagazine.com with a description about yourself (ie craft fair or retail experience and/or resume and pertinent urls). Thank you!

Le Dîner en Blanc

Paris’ secret renegade picnic takes its all-white affair to NYC

dinnerblanc-paris2.jpg dinnerblanc-paris3.jpg

Good weather in Paris always brings out an army of picnickers carrying folding chairs and baskets. But when Parisians-in-the-know descended on the Louvre courtyard last week, they were actually participating in an annual dining event that’s some 20 years old. Known as “Le Dîner en Blanc, the city’s clandestine dinner party attracts a crowd dressed entirely in white that comes together at an undisclosed location through a word-of-mouth campaign.

dinerblanc-paris4.jpg dinerblanc-paris5.jpg

The steadily-growing outdoor festivity makes a point to be as equally refined as it is fun, with guests dining on white linen at candle-lit tables, using cutlery brought from home. Live bands play in the background to crowds of over 8,000, who often end up dancing with sparklers in hand around the public space.

After successful picnics in Amsterdam, Berlin, Montreal and elsewhere, this year Le Dîner en Blanc is hitting NYC on 25 August 2011. Seating is limited to 1,000 guests—register for the wait list online and see more info at Le Dîner en Blanc’s New York Facebook page.

Mark Your Calendar: Donald Judd Mini Film Festival at David Zwirner

Time’s a wastin’ to catch the stellar Donald Judd exhibition at New York’s David Zwirner gallery, but procrastinators will be rewarded with a special film program on the show’s final day, this Saturday, June 25. First up is The Artist’s Studio: Donald Judd, Michael Blackwood‘s 2010 compilation of unused footage from two previous films (American Art in the 1960s and Masters of Modern Sculpture: Part III The New World). The 30-minute film, which will be shown four consecutive times beginning at 10:30 a.m., follows Judd from his SoHo home and studio to his early adventures in Marfa, Texas. The remote west Texas town is the focus of the day’s second film: Marfa Voices, a gorgeous documentary short by Rainer Judd, the artist’s daughter. Co-directed by Karen Bernstein, the film features excerpts from interviews conducted for the Judd Foundation‘s ongoing Oral History Project. Among the Marfa residents and Judd intimates who share their anecdotes are artist Boyd Elder, studio manager Dudley Del Balso, art dealer Paula Cooper, and lawyer Carl Ryan, who steals the show with his astute observations and brilliant comic timing. Rainer Judd will be on hand to introduce the film (screening at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 5 p.m.) and answer questions afterwards. Until then, enjoy the trailer:

Sofia Design Week 2011: Puma Creative Factory

paper jacket.jpg.jpg

During Sofia Design Week Puma is running a Creative Factory where everyone is invited to design their own jacket. The cut is always the same (available in different sizes) but the colors of the various pattern parts (seven in total) can be chosen individually.

So, for the equivalent of about $25 (charged for the sewing), you can create a one-off sports jacket. A great idea housed in a nice location in the middle of Sofia—an apartment right on Shishman Street. Not only can you watch the production process of assembling your very own Puma jacket, but you can also recharge your batteries in a welcoming hangout after walking your feet off, looking at the festival.

About Stefan Andren

Stefan Andren is a multidisciplinary designer with significant global experience having worked with some of the largest companies and brands in the world. His work has received international recognition, and has been featured in numerous publications including Business Week, ID Magazine, Wired, Dwell Magazine, Design Interior, and FORM. Stefan’s work has been awarded multiple IDEA, ID Magazine, and Red Dot design awards.

JUN14_Image_04.jpg

Stefan’s Portland-based Krown Lab has grown from a self serving product idea to a thriving business driven by design with a strong emphasis on local sourcing. The talk will offer an insight into how a small Portland based company found a niche in a growing market and how products are taken from initial idea to market introduction.

In an increasingly digital and virtual world where products can be created remotely, Krown Lab prefers to have a strong physical connection to their products throughout the creative process. Sourcing products within the region supports the local economy, forges close-knit working relationships with outside partners, and provides strong foundations for their business.

JUN14_Image_02.jpg

Krown Lab is interested in the long term, in timelessness and simplicity and getting it right the first time. A belief that “less really is more” is at the core of every creation. All their products have been distilled to their essence, with every detail of every part justified.

Sofia Design Week: Is There or Isn’t There

curtain_entrance.jpg

In case you didn’t know, Sofia Design Week is happening now with a wide range of very interesting shows, talks and workshops. Now in its third year, the festival producers Edno, a very active cultural group also responsible for creating Edno Magazine, must be congratulated for establishing a really impressive festival in a very short time! It successfully brings the world of design closer to the Bulgarian public, creating an awareness of the emerging local and international design scenes. Over the next few days we will report daily from the festival so stay tuned for more coverage!

Banksy Sponsors Free Admission on Mondays to LA MOCA’s Art in the Streets Exhibition

We really wish we’d told you about this yesterday, but fortunately there are a few more Mondays left between now and early August. Late last week, Los Angeles’ Museum of Contemporary Art announced that famous street artist, and included exhibitionist, Banksy, has sponsored free admission to the museum every Monday for the duration of its controversial street art exhibit, Art in the Streets. Like we sort of halfheartedly apologized for above, you missed yesterday, but if you want to catch the show and don’t want to pay for it, you have until August 8th, when it closes up shop and prepares for how it will terrorize Brooklyn next spring. Here’s a bit:

“I don’t think you should have to pay to look at graffiti. You should only pay if you want to get rid of it,” said Banksy. “MOCA is very grateful to Banksy for his unprecedented gesture,” said MOCA Director and exhibition co-curator Jeffrey Deitch. “Art in the Streets is drawing record attendance, and opening it up to everyone will have a lasting impact on communities in Los Angeles, many of whom have not been to the museum before.”
