Steven Heller, Shepard Fairey, and DJ Spooky Walk into a Bar Bookstore…

Quick. What “proceeds by psychological manipulations, character modifications, by creation of stereotypes useful when the time comes”? This is how the late philosopher and sociologist Jacques Ellul described propaganda, but his definition could also apply more generally to graphic design. Where one begins and the other ends (or should) is the subject of what promises to be a lively, amusing, and downright informative debate-cum-panel discussion that will take place tomorrow evening in New York at the Phaidon Store. The SoHo booklover’s paradise and co-sponsor Esopus magazine have lined up the ultimate panel of experts for the propagandorama: all-seeing design maestro Steven Heller, Shepard Fairey (he who shall be Obeyed), and that Subliminal Kid DJ Spooky, also known as Paul Miller. Stick around after the panel to pick up a copy of Heller’s smashing Iron Fists: Branding the 20th-Century Totalitarian State, freshly published in paperback (the people’s format!), which he will be happy to sign for you. Click here for full details on tomorrow’s event.

Around the Design World in 180 Words: Summer Pop-Up Shop Edition

‘Tis the season for popsicles, flip-flops, and pop-up shops. Here are three of our favorites:

  • Whether you live in SoHo or Provo, you can take advantage of the MZW Summer Shop, an online pop-up from our go-to accessories maker, M Z Wallace. The seasonal items chosen by designers Monica Zwirner and Lucy Wallace Eustice include a charming t-shirt featuring Cecil the Seagull (the summer shop’s mascot), recycled rubber bracelets, butterfly-printed playing cards, and Bain de Soleil—selected more for its scent and package design than for its sun protection capacity.

  • On Friday, MASS MoCA welcomes Wilco fans and falconry buffs to the three-day Solid Sound 2011 Arts and Music Festival, where Bureau for Open Culture and Printed Matter will present a Printed Matter pop-up store with artists’ books for sale and an exhibition of documentation from the Printed Matter archive.

  • And back in New York, be sure to stop by the pop-up shop at Rainbow City (pictured above). The AOL-sponsored installation of cheery inflatables by FriendsWithYou includes a souvenir hub designed by HWKN. Can’t make it to Rainbow City? Shop virtually at the FriendsWithYou online store.

  • 11th Annual Bicycle Film Festival in NYC This Weekend

    BFF11NYPoster_web-468.jpg

Just as the past decade has seen the rapid rise of the bicycle as a viable mode of transportation in American cities, so too has the Bicycle Film Festival (BFF for short) grown from a grassroots production to one of the most anticipated annual urban cycling events in over two dozen cities worldwide.

Herds of bicycle enthusiasts from around the world will flock to New York City this June for the Bicycle Film Festival’s Eleventh year in NY, to celebrate the world’s best invention: the bicycle.

We are proud to announce the Bicycle Film Festival’s 11th year in New York City, where the BFF was born! … From its roots in New York City, the BFF has grown into a multi-faceted, global event that will travel to over 25 cities this year, from Milan to Tokyo, Minneapolis to Sydney.

In 2001, Founding Director Brendt Barbur, was compelled to start the Bicycle Film Festival after being hit by a bus while riding his bike in New York City. He was inspired to turn this negative experience into a positive one, and created a festival that celebrates the bicycle through music, art, and film. The festival merges many creative communities, including fashion, music and art, as well as various bicycling communities—road cycling, mountain biking, fixed gear, BMX, cyclocross—over a shared passion for bike riding.

“NY is one of the greatest bicycle cities in the world” says Brendt Barbur. “We are very happy to bring the BFF back home.”

The film highlight is the world premiere of Racing Towards Red Hook, Jessica Scott & Hyde Harper’s documentary about three riders’ disparate paths to the Red Hook Criterium: a relative unknown Frank Warren, seasoned rider Al Barouh and defending champion Dan Chabanov. Check out the trailer below:

Bill McDonough to Give Keynote Address at Dwell on Design

Dwell on Design is back. The West Coast weekend of modern design events—from seminars and discussions to exhibits and self-guided tours of modern homes—kicks off on Friday in Los Angeles with a keynote address by William McDonough. The architect, designer, and author will describe how Cradle to Cradle thinking about design, architecture, and industry can create a future that is “more good” rather than “less bad.” Also part of McDonough’s discussion of the future of dwelling: the non-profit Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. Other featured presentations at Dwell on Design will focus on landscape design, sustainability, and what it’s like to live in an Airstream (we’re thinking more good and less bad?). On Sunday, Architecture for Humanity will cap off the three-day confab with a regeneration-themed Pecha Kucha. Ready to seize this opportunity to donate your heartbeat to a good cause and meet Ed Begley Jr.? Tickets are available here.
