Interview with Holly Becker about her new book ‘Workshop’

Workshopbook_bloesemblogs

Holly Becker from Decor8 blog did it again with her new book 'Decorate Workshop'. I really enjoy how Holly writes both on her fabulous blog as in her books. If you missed out on our review on her first book 'Decorate', you can read it again here.

What makes 'Decorate Workshop' different from her first title… well … lot's more interaction with us the readers. Yes, Holly makes it easy via a 'one step at the time' guide througout the book helping you to start decorating or renovating your own space. It's almost like she's there with you, telling you what you should be doing next.

She stresses this out in the book… "Write in it!". Scribble ideas, doodle designs, anything you think that will help you with your decorating. Holly believes writing it down in the book will make it more helpful to you and we believe she is absolutely right.     [CONTINUE READING]

Also while reading Decorate Workshop, we noticed that the book helps you come up with your own ideas instead of Holly telling you what's nice and what's not. That's what we believe the best part.

Sometimes when you get stuck and in need of just that a little push of inspiration this 'workshop' will do just that. Your own ideas will be restructured and easier for you to execute in the desired result.

We asked Holly some questions about her Decorate Workshop …

1. What’s the difference between the first book ‘Decorate’ and this one ‘Decorate Workshop’.

One difference is noticeable the moment you read the introduction because I wrote the book in a very personal, warm voice – the voice I write with on my blog. "Decorate Workshop" is the fun best friend to the more professional and design-savvy "Decorate". Decorate lays everything out, all the nuts and bolts of decorating and then Decorate Workshop gets more personal and shows the reader that decorating magic begins once the home owner knows themselves, their aesthetic and their home first – and from there, it breaks the decorating process down into 8 easy steps to accomplish that and to motivate them to get started on their next project. It also shows readers the exact process I follow when I'm approaching a new project. The book is loaded with gorgeous photos, shots of my own home, floor plans, pages for writing along with prompts and a special poster included in the French fold jacket that comes with every book. It's a very special book and I'm so proud of it.

2. How did you come up with the eight-step process?

I wanted to play with the number "8" in my brand, "decor8", but the best part was that I really do follow 8 steps to decorating so it worked out perfectly!

3. What room should someone pay extra close attention to while decorating and why?

Every room matters because each space impacts your mood and contributes to the overall energy in your home. It's important to consider your sleep space first though, which is often the last room that people give thought to – but your bedroom is where you escape, rest, and spend most of your time so it should be a haven that restores you – you should want to be there! After that, bathrooms and kitchens and then the rest…

4. What is your favorite style for a home?

My favorite style is personal style. Always. Take what you love and mix it all together and see what you come up with that represents your aesthetic the closest. You should be connecting to your home and feel great when you walk in the door, not following the pack or living in a catalog. I have a little of everything in my home so I just call my style Eclectic, that's my style if that's the right label for it – a little from here and there – and lots of personality.

Workshopbook_poster_bloesem_inside

5. What was particularly fun in creating this book?

I loved the actual writing process – there were nights that I wrote text until 4:00 am because I was on such a roll! I also always like traveling and styling the rooms, this book took me to lots of nice cities. I also enjoyed doing mood boards and other inspirational photography and it was also fun to have my home in this book – I love knowing that others are seeing where I live and work because I rarely show my home on my blog. I was also delighted that I could work with my husband, Thorsten Becker, on around thirty photos and we both loved doing it – the cover shot was one that he took and in the US version from Chronicle Books, he also shot the photo on the back of the jacket. He is a great interiors and still life photographer and in this book, he was able to use his talent. The book photographer was Debi Treloar, she shot my first book and this one, but we ran out of time in the end and had to shoot extra photos so Thorsten jumped in to save the day. It's very special to have your partner help you on a project that you'll hold in your hands forever and show your children and grandchildren someday.

6. How you hope people will use this book?

I want readers to really USE it for the intended purpose – not just to flip through and read casually, but to really dive in with pencil in hand and take notes, use the writing prompts, sketch out floor plans, do mood boards and the other creative visual exercises that I outline and have FUN with it as they discover a few things about themselves they'd not considered before. I want this book to be a very personal, exploratory process for them and then their home – I want them to approach decorating from a more creative and personal place while also accomplishing their goals. I don't want this book to just be "inspiring", we have enough inspiration online and in books – I want it to also be one that motivates them to action and helps to build creative courage and confidence so that they're not just being inspired but seeing things through. I had such a good time writing Decorate Workshop and I'm so proud of it – I hope that everyone loves it!

alt. summit NY at Martha Stewart

Alt summit NewYork

Yes the image above is from one of the hallways from Martha Stewart's head-office in NY city and I was lucky to spend a morning there… not only in the hallway of course 🙂

During my my visit to NY I heard about the alt.summit having a conference on a Thursday the same day as I would head back home again … with some help from online friends and of course the very friendly Gabrielle from designmom I was able to come and visit on a very short notice.

Alt. summit is by far the best bloggers conference in the world and is normally held during wintertime in Utah. Unfortunately I had never been to any, too far away from KL, but the stories, the blogposts and the information that comes from these summits have helped the bloggers community grow so enormously over the last couple of years.

It was the first time for alt.summit to make a stop in NY and there was I together with Jurianne all dressed up in the morning and to be honest a bit tired after a very intense week at the NYIGF… but we wouldn't want to miss this for anything.

Altsummit_tina

The morning started with a beautiful breakfast and crafting … I was a bit nervous knowing who else would be there … it was the first time for me meeting any other international blogger in person. I am going to introduce to you a few … the poeple who I have been in contact with over the last 4 years and who are truly special to me…………………. [READ MORE]

First Gabrielle aka designmom and founder of alt.summit. This remarkable women in the yellow pants runs designmom, has 6 six kids, lives in France, while being from the US and founded kirtsy and alt.summit. She is just as friendly and sincere as you will read on her blog. Everyting she does is so fully comitted and there must be a lot of discipline involved if you can do all this in one life-time.

Then Tina Roth Eisenbergh aka swiss-miss a real example for me! Wow this lady gave one hack of a speech … I was begeistert by her straight-forwardness, her energy and the way she believes in cooperating! You should listen to what she has to say in any of this youtube movie. Besides swiss-miss, Tina organizes a monthly breakfast lecture series called CreativeMornings, runs a simple browser-based to-do app called TeuxDeux and is the founder of Tattly, a designy temporary tattoo shop. ps. Tina once gave me this 'award' … big thing for me!

Altsummit-irenerachel

And then there she was the beautiful Rachel from Handmade Charlotte …a kids fashion designer and a mom to five kids. We started to know each other a long time ago when she became a sponsor of BKids with her beautiful collection for kids. She designed a collection for Anthropology and nowadays she writes for big names like Disney, Babble and of course for her own wonderful blog.

Standing next to Rachel is Emily Meyer from tea collection. We also met each other via BKids as tea has been a long time sponsor of my blogs .. yeahhh!! Emily is the founder of this very famous brand in the USA and she was speaker during that day talking about the influence of social media. Unfortunately I missed the talk like I  missed the guest appaerance by miss Martha Stewart herself … Jurianne and I had a plane to catch … but I am ever so grateful to Gabrielle for letting us visit for a couple of hours. It was exttemely inspiring and I do hope bloggers events like these can take place in Asia too.

Altsummit-narthastewart

Two more people I need to talk about here are the lovely Lorena Simonovich from petit collage. She is fisrt of all a very talented creative lady but also a good and wise business women. I always enjoy seeing how she has grown her label over the past couple of years.

And last but not least I shook hands with Sweet Paul … you know the founder and author of food magazine Sweet Paul … I have written about him quite often here on Bloesem and was happy that we finally met. Can't wait to see his next issue, becasue I enjoyed the last issue very much… 🙂 thanks Paul x

… and there was I sitting next to Jurianne … I hope I can go to another alt. summit in 2013!

about alt. summit: Combining the talents of sisters Sara Urquhart and Gabrielle Blair, joined by Kate Schoening, Alt has grown to be the premier business conference for pioneering bloggers and rookie bloggers alike. Alt is a place to connect. Connecting with peers, meeting new friends, brainstorming collaborative ideas and building relationships with brands are all important parts of Alt. These things can happen sitting across a table at dinner or can happen through an online class.

Monday’s Quick start: a BIG thank you

Bloesemwears

Not sure whether you noticed but I was away for a summer vacation with my family in Spain and oh boy did we have a wonderful time there. Just before I left I launched a new jewelry collection called bloesem wears. With the help of a good friend in Kuala Lumpur I was able to ship out many orders throughout the world …. but I am absolutely sure that these fantastic bloggers made all the difference in getting attention for my shop and I am very grateful for that.

Jan from Poppytalk, Fenny from F for Fabulous, Christina from Down And Out Chic and Emma Lamb all wrote some really nice compliments about my handmade collection

Ohjoy

Seeing my necklaces over at Oh Joy felt perhaps most special because Joy is so known for her impeccable style for fashion and accessoiries. So getting her approval made me feel I am in the right direction and her words encourages me to explore this new hobby of mine a bit more. If you would like to see a bit more of her great sense of style then just take a look at one of these more personal posts of her: 'hello my name is Joy'…

Bloginc.

And if that is not all this lady also wrote a new book: Blog, Inc. – a book about how to have a successful blog to be released by Chronicle Books in Fall 2012 and available for pre-order here.

ps. If you have written about my new bloesem wears collection and I didn't notice yet, please let me know ~ so I can thank you properly too 🙂 ~irene

BloesemWears

As some of you may know, when I am not online I am usually busy making things and since a year or so I have had this passion for making jewelry (remember BKids Wear Neon)… experimenting with all sorts of designs I finally made a necklace for myself which received many lovely responses from friends and, most importantly perhaps, from my husband (who, actually, is supposed to buy me jewelry rather than letting me make my own)… so I thought why not make an entire collection for moms, daughters, tweens and their friends and present them to you… not that I had a lot of spare time to do this but I managed to squeeze in a couple of extra hours every day to craft what I think and hope you agree is a lovely collection of easy-to-wear affordable funky jewelry..

so Bloesem Brings Beads and Braids this summer…

All pieces come in very limited editions, carefully placed in beautiful gift boxes and are handmade by me, using materials that I love such as pearls, real silver, gold filled beads and some of my favorite gem stones…and last but certainly not least…genuine Italian cotton ribbons from Angela Liquori and… of course lots of thread!

Making jewelry is like yoga, at least to me, and I highly recommend you try it yourself…nothing is more rewarding than making something with your own hands, wear it and have people notice it as an unique piece… why don’t you give it a try and order the DIY kit that I prepared and includes all materials you need, except the tools.

BWears_PearlsPool

Now let me tell you about pearls… my own research (including again my husband…) tells me that  most men have this secret love affair with pearls and find women that wear them…, well, simply irresistible…. which sounds like a good thing to me… but personally I have never been a big fan of traditional pearl necklaces… giving our men the benefit of the doubt, I have tried to come up with a more contemporary and nonchalant version of the classic pearl necklace… I love how the pearls go together with the beautiful Italian loose weave ribbons from studio carta inc.

Do you ever Wear Pearls? Love to hear your thoughts!                                    …… MORE

Monday’s quick start: La Casita de Wendy

Lacasitadewendy_shop

Let's start this new week with spring-summer collection from La Casita de Wendy from Madrid.

Inés Aguilar and Iván Martínez are the designers and creators behind this beautiful brand… in just a short time, "la casita de wendy" has become very popular in Europe with notably Björk who chose some of their outfits for cover spreads for the English magazine "Wire" and French rock magazine "les Inrockuptibles",…

I always love visiting their blog too and have a look behind the scenes of their crafty meetings …

I really enjoyed this invitation from Dutch website Kleurinspiratie (=ColorInspiration) to create a color board for them… I choose the color Blue, my favorite at the moment.

a couple of words what colors and especially the color blue mean to me.. "Hier bij de Zee"… just a DUtch song that pops up in my head when looking at the collage above. And that's what colors do to you… they bring a feeling, an association with a memory or an emotion.

Spring is here and summer is approaching, a perfect moment to bring one of the many types of beautiful blues in your house.

Blue stands for fresh and cool, but also warm and funky. If you don't want to over-do it then  just add a small detail. Blue is probably the most universal color and you don't get easily bored with blue.

According to Pantone indigo (the deep dark blue) is the trend for 2012 for interior design. The experts say indigo stands for peace and inner rest. What more could you want? Where black prevailed in recent years it is now time for his lighter brother Indigo. I can't think of a color that doesn't go well with it."

Kleurinspiratie also asked me a couple of questions and my answers are right here in Dutch or the translated version
