American photographer Mitch Dobrowner has scooped the top prize at this year’s Sony World Photography Awards, picking up the L’Iris d’Or for his series of impressively stormy landscape images…

Tobias Braeuning was the Open Competition overall winner thanks to the above image entitled Dancing Queen which captures the collision of multiple coloured water drops.

Student Asef Ali Mohammad of Middlesex University responded to a brief to evoke emotion through colour. His series of images of youngsters in Kabul earned him the Student Focus award.

And this image, entitled The Last Hero, earned young Russian photographer Sergey Kolyaskin the Youth Award – a new category this year open to anyone under the age of 20.

Other winners included veteran photographer William Klein who picked up the Outstanding Contribution to Photography Award, and also Donald Weber, Simon Norfolk, Palmer + Pawel, Rob Hornstra from Netherlands, and Peter Franck of Germany – who all won different professional categories.
