San Diego Museum of Art Appoints New Director

sdma.jpgThe San Diego Museum of Art‘s Board of Trustees has named Roxana Velásquez Martínez del Campo to the role of executive director. She replaces Derrick R. Cartwright, who last October took over for Mimi Gates as executive director of the Seattle Art Museum, now in the throes of budget-balancing initatives. A trio of deputy directors—Julia Marciari-Alexander (curatorial affairs), Julianne Markow (operations and finance); and Katy McDonald (external affairs)—has served as co-interim directors of the San Diego Museum of Art since Cartwright’s departure. Velásquez, who was born in the United States and raised in Mexico, seems well-suited to lead the Balboa Park institution, which was established in 1922 and occupies a Spanish Renaissance-inflected home designed by William Templeton Johnson. She has served as the director of three major museums in Mexico City: Museo Nacional de San Carlos, Museo Nacional de Arte (Munal), and most recently, Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes. “Roxana brings to the museum an impeccable ability to manage all facets of a major arts institution, a strong network within the global art community, and a cross-border cultural perspective,” said Ken Widder, president of the museum’s board of trustees, in a statement announcing the appointment. Velásquez will take office early this fall.
