Salford Type Foundry

Set up by the University of Salford‘s graphic design students and lecturer Tim Isherwood, the Salford Type Foundry is an online repository for type designed by students from Salford and beyond…

“The idea for the foundry,” explains Isherwood, “came from being frustrated at my students designing great fonts and then leaving them on hard drives or in sketchbooks and so I decided that they needed a greater voice.”

The STF is first and foremost a website (salfordtypefoundry.co.uk) where students can showcase their typographic experiments and typefaces.

“It is a student facing project,” Isherwood continues, “they have designed, coded and built the site as well as the fonts on it. The idea thus far is that we celebrate all things in Salfordian type design, but going forward we are keen to expand to other institutions. The Foundry wishes to become a ‘go to’ repository for student type design from across the country.”

The STF officially launches next week on Wednesday 21 November (21/11/12 – precisely the kind of palindromic date that type lovers always appreciate) with an event in the foyer of Creative Lynx at 52 Princess Street, Manchester where typographic posters will be exhibited and distributed.
