Royal Mint Releases Public-Designed 2012 Olympics Themed Coins

Remember the 2012 Olympics? Feels like we haven’t heard much from them lately, what with their being in the middle of construction on all those fancy new buildings and likely every person in the UK is in the middle of rehearsals for the opening ceremonies after seeing China’s ’08 extravaganza. However, we’re sure, as we move into next year, the attention will start to ramp up a bit. For now, we turn to their latest effort: the issuing of a new 50p coin. The government crowd sourced the designs for 29 variations of the coin, all featuring sports played in the Olympics and drawn by members of the public out of a submission pool of over 30,000 (somehow this seems more okay than when, say, Gap thinks about trying it — likely because you know there was a large group of designers employed in getting all of these illustrations cleaned up and ready for coin-printing). We like the illustrations, but we’re more suckers for any heptagon coin. And the attractive collector’s packs they’ve put together for each coin, using a variation on the colors of their controversial logo, almost make that whole debacle somehow more okay.
