Dezeen Showroom: clay is moulded into a perfect circle and combined with precision metal and LED components to make the Rings lights, a series of customisable ceiling light sculptures by Ted Bradley Studio.
A dramatic alternative to a chandelier, the Rings lights feature groupings of ceramicist Ted Bradley‘s handmade rings, each meticulously crafted from white porcelain and inlaid with LEDs.
Bradley says he was initially told by two master mould makers that his sculptural lighting idea was impossible to realise, due to the difficulty of making a geometrically perfect circle from clay with tolerances of a few hundredths of an inch that could be married to precision metal and LED components.
However, Bradley persevered, and today there are more than 70 variations of his Rings pendant lighting designs handmade by his own studio in the USA in Boulder, Colorado.
The lights are made from a specially formulated, bright-white porcelain that is dried over several weeks before being sanded smooth and then coated with a thin layer of glaze that forms a sheer satin true glass finish.
There is a choice of 21 different colours for the glaze, including bold colours such as Coral and Deep Ocean Blue as well as neutrals. Careful attention is also paid to the metal components, which are made from solid brass or stainless steel and hand-finished by an expert within the studio.
