Photographer Stephen Mallon Documenting NYC Machinery

NYC motorist cheapskates know that if you want to get from Manhattan to Yankee Stadium by car, you either suck it up and pay the toll to go over the Triborough Bridge, or you add 20 minutes to your trip by snaking up to the toll-free Willis Avenue Bridge. I always choose the latter.

The Willis Avenue Bridge has been around since 1901 and was recently replaced. Not rebuilt, replaced. Photographer Stephen Mallon documented the whole thing, shooting over 30,000 stills as they brought the bridge down from upstate and installed it like an appliance. The full video is here in high-def and looks sooooo much better than the trailer.

You may recognize Mallon’s name from the photo exhibit he held earlier this month in NYC, where he documented NYC subway cars that had been transported offshore for use as barrier reefs.
