Pentagram Shuts Down Sean ‘Puff Daddy’ Combs’ T-Shirt Design Theft

While the design firm Pentagram is riding high this week after the announcement of its newest partners, Eddie Opara and Naresh Ramchandani, they’ve had to put the celebrations on hold for a minute to deal with Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs. And deal with him they apparently have. Mid-morning on Sunday, they tweeted that they’d discovered that a new shirt released by Combs’ fashion line, Sean John, called “Demons,” closely resembled a poster designed by artist Marian Bantjes and Pentagram partner Michael Bierut for a 2008 exhibition at the Yale School of Architecture. So similar was it that all it looks like the company did was change the word used at its center from “Seduction” to “Sean John.” The tweet alerted Archinect, who posted about it, which was then seen by Gawker who did the same, with likely a few dozen other blogs picking it up along the way. Since then, it appears that Combs’ company has bowed to the sudden attention, and/or were now aware that one of their designers had swiped the idea, and have taken the shirt down. Well, sort of. There’s still a listing for it on the site, but no image for it and a message when you try and purchase it, “Sorry! That item is currently unavailable or out of stock.” So it looks like Pentagram: 1, Combs: 0.
