West Elm’s Stria: A Step Towards Differentiated Mass Production

0welmstria01.jpg

West Elm is getting in on the reclaimed lumber game with their new Stria storage collection, manufactured in India. The face of each unit incorporates a type of wood called saal, taken from dismantled Indian railway trestles, that lends each piece a handmade look.

It being West Elm, it doesn’t come cheap, of course: The nightstand alone comes in at $300. But we like the idea of mass-market companies playing around with this sort of differentiated mass production.

Sony Open Planet Ideas Winner – Greenbook: Giving you that extra push to do some good

This post is brought to you by Sony’s Open Planet Ideas.

OPI_Logo_colour.jpg

Say you’re sitting around on a Saturday, with no obligations other than bumming around the house and poking at old projects you’ve been “meaning to get to” for months. You debate the idea of actually doing something meaningful with your weekend, maybe even with some quick volunteer work, but where do you go? Even if you had considered this on some Saturday, the extra effort required to identify a volunteer organization might have burned away any energy you were ready to expend.

Ay, there’s the rub: How can people quickly and easily connect with the thousands of charities, nonprofits and groups they might want to help, even for just a few hours?

Paul Frigout considered this problem and created Greenbook, the winning concept from the Sony Open Planet Ideas Challenge.

Canal+ shows how to get ahead in the movies

French TV channel Canal+ has a released a witty series of ads, devised by BETC Euro RSCG in Paris, that emphasise its commitment to helping filmmakers…

The ads use beautifully designed flowcharts (inspired by New York magazine, perhaps?) to highlight the many twists and turns that can occur when making a movie, and some of the solutions. Each one tackles a different genre, including action, horror and porn, and feature many amusing outcomes. Shown below are three of the full ads, alongside details of each.

Sustainability in 7: Alissa Walker on Walking the Walk

Thumbnail_AlissaWalker.png

90-x-90.jpg The Designers Accord Sustainability in 7 video series delivers a daily dose of design inspiration by today’s leading sustainability experts. Join in the conversation as they share 7 things every designer should consider when integrating sustainability into design practice.

Alissa Walker remains true to her surname in this playful Friday edition of Sustainability in 7, in which she imparts short, sweet bits (or licks, as it were) of practical wisdom. Enjoy!

About Alissa Walker

Alissa Walker is a freelance writer who can most often be found in Los Angeles. She writes about design, architecture, cities, and transportation for many publications, including Fast Company and GOOD, and is the associate producer for the public radio show “DnA: Design and Architecture.” In 2010, Alissa was named as a USC/Annenberg Getty Arts Journalism Fellow for her writing about design and urbanism. She lives in a royal blue house in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles where she throws ice cream socials, writes infrequently on her blog, Gelatobaby, and relishes life in L.A. without a car.

The Designers Accord is a global coalition of designers, educators, and business leaders working together to create positive environmental and social impact. Adopters of the Designers Accord commit to five guidelines that provide collective and individual ways to integrate sustainability into design. The Designers Accord provides a participatory platform with online and offline manifestations so that members have access to a community of peers who share methodologies, resources, and experiences around environmental and social issues in design.
