New editions of Minuteman watch by Squarestreet arrive at Dezeen Watch Store

Dezeen Watch Store: Swedish designers Alexis Holm and David Ericsson have released eight new styles of their popular Minuteman watch, including six eye-catching one-handed models.
Originally launched in Oct 2013 by the duo’s Hong Kong-based studio Squarestreet, Minuteman is a “beautifully simple” watch built using hand-made Mazzuchelli acetate and a stainless steel endoskeleton.
The classic two-handed model features a 60-second index and hour hand with a circular tip that highlights the hour markers, while the one-handed model displays the time in 5-minute intervals.
Eight editions in six new shades of acetate have been added to the collection: black/black and tortoise/croc come in a one or two-handed version, while grey/black, grey/green, horn/beige and horn/black are available in the single-hand edition only.
“Minuteman is not only a beautifully simple timepiece, it is also a reaction to how we view time,” Holm said in an interview with Dezeen Watch Store.
According to Holm, the unusual design of the two watch faces is intended to encourage a more relaxed approach to telling the time.
“Instead of knowing the exact second of every minute and stressing over the fact that you’re 45 seconds late,” Holm said, “we invite you to casually glance at your watch and instead say ‘Oh, it’s about quarter past three’.”
“We guessed some people might prefer the more widely used method of displaying time,” he added. “As it turned out, our one-hand model was more than twice as successful as its two-handed brother.”
Designed to withstand a 30-metre vertical dive, the watch has a 4 o’clock date window and is powered by a Japanese made Miyota Quartz movement.
“The most impressive part of Minuteman is definitely its Mazzucchelli acetate outer casing,” Holm said. “The process is remarkable and the result speaks for itself – I’ve never seen plastic with such intense depth and colour.”
