Nendo designs Fusion furniture and homeware collection for BoConcept
Posted in: UncategorizedJapanese studio Nendo has designed a collection of furniture and homeware for Danish brand BoConcept, which includes a seat that appears to hug itself and accessories with patterns based on origami.
The thirteen-piece Fusion range was designed by Nendo to blend elements of Japanese and Danish design.
“Like the collection’s name suggests, we wanted to create new functions and visual effects by fusing together two different elements,” said Nendo.
Accessories in the range for BoConcept are patterned with geometric forms based on the Japanese paper-folding art of origami.
“Our first idea was to use origami, the traditional Japanese art of bending a two-dimensional sheet of paper to make a three-dimensional object,” said the designers.
These shapes wrap around the outside of a series of cups, echoed by similar patterns inside that are designed to look like various animals.
Nendo also applied the patterns to cushions, rugs, plates and trays, in a range of colours.
On the plates, the folds are made into two-way symmetrical patterns to create kaleidoscopic effects.
A flat day bed has four loose block-shaped cushions in different sizes that can be arranged to accommodate different seating positions.
An armchair appears to be bent into shape from a flat section, the back curling up to hug the folded arms.
There’s also a footstool that has rounded wooden legs that match the supports for the chair. All of these furniture pieces come upholstered in leather or fabric.
White tables are modelled on pairs of spectacles, with two circular surfaces that look like lenses and legs that echo the frames.
Each table consists of two pairs of “glasses”, sharing a leg that acts as a pivot point so the shorter element can rotate beneath the other.
Shelving units are offset from their backboards so they slot together side by side to form a wall system.
The collection also features wooden accessories including a wall clock with scissors for hands, a reversible holder for candles and tea lights, and ornaments shaped like abstract birds with tiny cones for beaks.
Nendo is one of today’s most prolific design studios, working on everything from furniture and interiors to sunglasses and shoes in the last few months.
