Mulberry celebrates its 40th anniversary with a new book

To celebrate its 40th anniversary, luxury fashion brand Mulberry, famous for its much sought after handbags and leather goods, has produced a book, conceived and designed by London-based design studio Construct

The book, simply titled Mulberry, is roughly A4 in format but feels larger, perhaps because at a whopping 480 pages it’s quite the weighty tome. Quarter bound in linen with two silk book markers and a subtly embossed full colour front cover, the book displays an attention to detail synonymous with Mulberry’s core brand values.

Inside, it contains an introduction which tells the story of Mulberry’s creation in 1971 by Roger Saul. The bulk of the book thereafter is choc-full of captionless images – almost all of which were shot by long time Mulberry collaborator Venetia Dearden (who regular readers may recall produced a Glastonbury portrait project with Mulberry which we blogged about almost exactly a year ago here) over the last two years, taken behind the scenes at the brand’s Somerset factory, of the Mulberry team at its shops, shows and after parties, and informal portraits of some of Mulberry’s main protagonists and primary collaborators. Only towards the very back of the book are there several pages of uncaptioned images of Mulberry bags such as the classic Bayswater and the relatively recent addition to the collection, the Alexa. These are accompanied by quotes about the brand by various fashionable types such as Julie Verhoeven, Katie Grand and Alexa Chung.

Here’s a look inside:

“Rather than a dry historical round up of the past, the book is a glimpse inside our world, a fly-on-the-wall, warts and all journey through the past two years of the brand’s life,” says Georgia Fendley, creative director of Construct and brand director of Mulberry. “It shows our public and private life, the highs and lows and the extraordinary Mulberry ‘family’ that work so hard to make it all seem so effortless.”

Mulberry, the book (£55) will be stocked in selected Mulberry stores and bookshops. With a typically on-brand sense of fun, books bought in the Mulberry store come packaged with special gold 40th anniversary stickers and a belly-bound set of picturecards:
