Frederic Goudy had one, so did Philip Johnson and Robert Rasuchenberg. The Eameses had two. Pentagram is awash in them. George Lois wears his to bed. We’re talking about AIGA Medals, the graphic design world’s highest honor. AIGA has just announced its 2010 medalists: Steve Frykholm, Herman Miller’s first in-house graphic designer and—40 years later—the company’s creative director and vice president; artist, graphic designer, computer whiz, and simplicity advocate John Maeda, who presides over the Rhode Island School of Design; and Jennifer Morla, head of Morla Design and former chief creative officer of Design Within Reach. “Each has contributed to the way design can intrigue the spirit, engage curiosity, enhance business, explore creative use of visual technique, and communicate value that is respected by business, society, and our popular culture,” said AIGA executive director Rick Grefé. Frykholm, Maeda, and Morla were recommended to the AIGA board of directors by a member-based awards committee. The trio will be presented with their James Earle Fraser-designed medals early next year at the AIGA Design Legends Gala in New York City.
