Chicago-based architect Jeanne Gang is among the 22 new fellows of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Announced today, the 2011 cohort of MacArthur Fellows—selected for “their creativity, originality, and potential to make important contributions in the future”—also includes silversmith Ubaldo Vitali, poets Kay Ryan and A. E. Stallings, Sino-fascinating writer Peter Hessler, WNYC Radio host and producer Jad Abumrad, and University of Washington professor Shwetak Patel, a computer scientist who has invented a series of energy-saving, life-improving sensor technology systems for home environments. Each fellow will receive $500,000 in no-strings-attached support over the next five years. The MacArthur Foundation has previously bestowed its unrestricted largess upon fellows such as architects Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio, typographer Matthew Carter, filmmaker Errol Morris, artist Tara Donovan, and lighting designer Jennifer Tipton.
