As the Hatch Live Competition continues to heat up, hear more from our eight semi-finalists and get ready for a head to head knockout challenge in our full scale Rhino3D Design-off! The first design challenges start this weekend with product categories including tables, ottomans, pitchers and storage units.

“Hatch Live was set up to be different than most competition—to build a community at the same time as being an exciting design competition,” explains Founder and CEO of Hatch Hub, Matthew Sargeant. “It’s a way for designers to get better at designing within constraints and reacting to external influences in a very real way.” And semi-finalist Paul Choate agrees, “I haven’t been a part of a competition that places designers in a live scenario. It’s always only been about developing a concept and submitting it. I think this competition will force the participating designers to work around the unanticipated. It should be fun.”

Hatch Live aims to build on a technology revolution which is radically reshaping the way products are designed and made. Nelson Ayala, a Hatch Live semi-finalist, explains, “Technology has brought more versatility to the design arena and the options in creating and innovating are becoming limitless. Technologies like CAD, 3D printing and CNC milling machine are shifting the face of design.” Additionally, competitor Ruben Hernandez notes “Society is now more design-oriented and designers are taking advantage of the momentum… The fact is everything around us could be made better, more functional and more beautiful. Design is an ever evolving field, a way of life, and people are starting to take notice.”

As the competitors continue to prepare, WeWork Lounge in Soho is getting ready to host the competition where designers will meet, mingle and ultimately battle for the chance at the Hatch Live Grand Prize: $4,000 to continue their practice and reach their design aspirations, as well as a brunch and portfolio review with former Editor in Chief Dan Rubinstein. 3D Printing Powerhouse, Shapeways, will also be coming onboard for the competition, offering their “Shapeways Staff Favorite” prize to the design they find the most innovative from the competition. The Shapeways prize includes a one week residency with the Museum of Arts and Design’s Out of Hand exhibition.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Hatch Live Competition—launching this October 19th—and don’t forget to vote for your favorite on Twitter October 19th and 20th.
