Glazer’s Last Tango in Compton

Jonathan Glazer doesn’t shoot many ads, and when he does, it’s usually a big deal. Think Guinness Surfer, Sony Paint. His latest spot, written by DDB UK, features a young couple doing the Tango. To a soundtrack of West Coast Hip Hop track (Don’t Stop by Roc C). To advertise a small, German car…

The couple in question are the top Argentinian Tango dancers in the world and Glazer captures the action (with a multitude of camera angles) rather well. VW’s strapline, of which we’re reminded in the final, jarring shot of a black VW Polo, is Tough. Beautiful. Polo. OK, so the music is tough, the tango is beautiful, the dancers both look kind of street (tough and beautiful) – but the Polo is just… well, that little car you see in the packshot shoved at the end of a nicely shot film of two dancers doing their thing.

I can’t help wondering whether the VW Polo would be the car of choice of each of the two dancers in the film…

Or are they more likely to be spotted swerving in a Lexus from Long Beach to Texas?
