There has long been an emphasis on functionality when it comes to the design of workplace furnishings, however designers are increasingly prioritising playfulness and aesthetics when creating the form of pieces destined for office use.
Among the following selection are items for home offices alongside those for open-plan workplaces, all of which aim to facilitate efficient and comfortable in-person, remote and hybrid work styles.

Icon chair by Marcello Ziliani for Mara
Italian brand Mara has developed a new iteration of its Icon chair, which was designed by architect Marcello Ziliani with a polypropylene plastic shell.
The chair’s materiality makes it flexible and durable, with dynamic joints between the seat, backrest and armrests promoting healthy seated postures.
American brand Hexcal has designed a collection of desktop products comprising a monitor arm, standing desk, desk mat, magnetic charging cable and an all-in-one desktop organiser named Hexcal Studio.
These Desk setup products have a cohesive aesthetic characterised by matt black surfaces and silver detailing.

ILE modular system by Foster + Partners for Benchmark
A modular workplace furniture system made from solid British ash or American red oak has been recently released by Foster + Partners Industrial Design.
Components in the ILE modular system include storage and desk modules that can be placed back-to-back or in linear arrangements to create continuous, sleek furnishing solutions in office spaces.
Furniture brand NaughtOne has created a distinctive, asymmetrical pouf that can be upholstered in a whole host of fabrics and materials.
The Truffle pouf is designed to be used solo or in groups, creating informal and playful seating solutions in open plan offices.
Sahara Wall Panel by Gabriel Tan for Abstracta
The undulating, ridged form created by wind-blown sand in deserts is mimicked in Swedish brand Abstracta‘s Sahara Wall Panel.
Designer Gabriel Tan created the warm brown panels, which are square-shaped and can be affixed to walls in a choice of orientations to create wavy patterns.
Ripple sofa by Askia Furniture
Exaggerated French seams delineate the edges of this seating collection Romanian brand Askia Furniture, designed for use in office breakout areas.
The Ripple sofa is modular, allowing components to be reconfigured according to ever-changing spatial layouts of workplaces. Rouched details add personality to the pieces.
Sandie chairs by Baldanzi & Novelli for Narbutas
The Sandie range of office chairs is the most recent result of the workplace furniture brand Narbutas‘ longstanding collaboration with Italian design studio Baldanzi & Novelli.
Five chairs made up the series – high-back executive chairs, medium-back task chairs, low-back meeting chairs and two types of lounge chairs – all of which contribute to the wellness of people in workplaces.
Ramp seating by Skrivo for MDD
Milan-based design studio Skrivo looked to the sloping form of skate ramps when creating this playful office seating system.
Aptly named Ramp seating, the pieces are characterised by the curved, rounded forms of both their bases and upholstery, which recall skating infrastructure.
Bobby X and Bobban X by Thomas Bernstrand and Stefan Borselius for Blå Station
Magnets allow the components of Swedish brand Blå Station‘s Bobby X and Bobban X to click together, creating secure but adaptable configurations.
Designed in collaboration with Thomas Bernstrand and Stefan Borselius, each piece can be used solo or in tandem with others.

German brand Wilkahn‘s ON Casual office chair was designed to have the ergonomics and support of a task chair combined with the comfort of an armchair.
The chair’s flexible design allows for a comfortable sitting experience even when used for prolonged periods of time.

Bound seating by Karim Rashid for Kusch + Co
A dramatic band of contrasting colours running around each piece defines this collection by German brand Kusch + Co.
Bound seating was created by designer Karim Rashid to encourage togetherness and collaboration for those using the pieces.
