The Designers Accord Sustainability in 7 series stared with simple idea: How can we make the abstract subject of sustainability personal? While there are innumerable resources, books, websites, and blogs dedicated to sustainability, for so many of us the basic concepts still feel inaccessible.

In response, I asked 18 of my favorite sustainability experts to each make a short video of the top 7 things every designer should know about a specific topic in sustainability. I am delighted with the results, which range from passionate webcam recordings to prop-filled expositions and believe you will be too. All the videos are homemade, authentic, and utterly sincere. It’s the real deal.

In each video, it is impossible not to find at least one comment that makes you say: “Yes! I get it,” or “Right! I am going to look at this differently.” Hopefully there are 10 more ideas that will invigorate and inspire you in all together new ways too.

Beginning tomorrow and throughout the month of April, we will be posting a video-a-day. We hope you’ll consider these videos as your daily dose of smart thinking in sustainability. I’ve watched all the videos and spent time with all the creators—if you don’t find something transformational in this content, you’re not listening closely. This bite-sized professional education series is the first of its kind and it’s our hope that it will help the design community fill the gaps in knowledge around integrating sustainability into design practice.

The Designers Accord is a global coalition of designers, educators, and business leaders working together to create positive environmental and social impact. Adopters of the Designers Accord commit to five guidelines that provide collective and individual ways to integrate sustainability into design. The Designers Accord provides a participatory platform with online and offline manifestations so that members have access to a community of peers who share methodologies, resources, and experiences around environmental and social issues in design.
