Clam chair by Arnold Madsen and Dagmar

Dezeen Showroom: vintage furniture manufacturer Dagmar has rereleased Arnold Madsen’s Clam chair – a Danish classic of once unknown provenance.

The Clam chair –or ‘Muslingstol’ in Danish – was designed in 1944 by Arnold Madsen, an upholsterer who was untrained in design and so fashioned the original model for his organically shaped seat in plaster.

The Clam chair was designed in 1944

He partnered with skilled cabinetmaker Henry Schubell in 1945 and they realised the piece under their new moniker of Madsen & Schubell, putting it into production with Norwegian company Vik & Blindheim.

After fading from memory, the Clam chair met with renewed appreciation when it appeared on the auction market in 2012, although it went misattributed until a group of researchers finally verified the chair’s true authorship and history in 2019.

It is now being produced with sheepskin upholstery

Now, eighty years after the chair’s inception, Dagmar is producing a new edition of the Clam chair with the permission of the Madsen family, upholstered in sheepskin or custom fabrics.

The chair has a solid beech wood frame with a linen-webbed and foam-padded interior and European oak or American walnut arms and legs. It is made to order in Sweden using traditional joinery and upholstery methods.
