CFDA to Honor ‘Fashion Icon’ Lady Gaga, Nominates Alexander Wang in Three Award Categories

Last night, Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) president Diane von Furstenberg opened up her Meatpacking District wonderland to host a party at which the nominees and honorees for the 2011 CFDA Fashion Awards were announced. The big buzz? That Lady Gaga has been chosen to receive the 2011 fashion icon award, bestowed upon “an individual whose signature style has had a profound influence on fashion.” Meanwhile, it’s business as usual in the womenswear category, where Marc Jacobs (who took home the honor last year, as well as in 1997 and 1992) is pitted against Alexander Wang (a 2010 nominee) and Proenza Schouler’s Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, who shared the award with Oscar de la Renta back in 2007. We like Wang to win, and the young designer has pulled off the elusive CFDA hat trick, earning nominations in not only womenswear but also accessory design and for the Swarovski award for menswear. The main menswear field consists of Michael Bastian, Patrik Ervell, and Simon Spurr, and we think it’s Bastian’s year. Over in accessory design, Wang and the Proenza boys will compete against Reed Krakoff, who won in 2004 for his work with Coach and is now nominated for his own beautifully executed brand. Yes, the label is young, but if voters go on design alone, Krakoff can’t lose. As for this year’s special honorees, Jacobs will receive the lifetime achievement award, and The Telegraph‘s enduringly ebullient Hilary Alexander will be honored with the media award. Taking home the international award: the brilliant Phoebe Philo for her genius moves at Celine. The 2011 CFDA Awards gala will take place on June 6 at New York’s Lincoln Center. A full list of nominees is below.
