Golden Hills Eco Urban Master Plan, Danang, Vietnam

SOM Awarded Commission for Eco-Urban Community in Danang, Vietnam

May 5, 2011 (London, UK) Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, LLP (SOM) has been awarded the Master Plan commission for Golden Hills, and Eco-Urban Community in Danang, Vietnam. SOM’s preliminary plan for a sustainable residential community at the edge of the city looks to set a new benchmark for ecologically-sensitive development in Vietnam. SOM is now working closely with the city planning authorities to finalise the project’s design and ensure its delivery. This is SOM’s third recent project ‘win’ in the country and follows the firm’s recent successes of Green Tech City in Hanoi and FPT City also in Danang.

Golden Hills by SOM

The plan has been commissioned by Trugnam Group, an up-and-coming Vietnamese company specialising in real-estate, construction, and hydro-electric power. The project site covers an area of 375 hectares along the Cu De River at the northern edge of the City of Danang. The Plan incorporates a wide range of uses organised into a series of distinct districts, including a series of residential neighbourhoods, a Village Centre, a Business District, and an Education, Sports and Leisure District. Located at the mouth of the river, the plan addresses the site’s critical flood risk environment through a series of forward-looking storm water strategies which preserve existing watercourses and the natural landscape character of the site. A series of new terraced levels will integrate development into the site and enhance both existing and future landscapes to ensure flood protection during various critical storm events, including 1 in 10-year, 1 in 100-year and 1 in 200-year storms. In addition to taking into account tidal flooding and sea level rise in the South China Sea, the plan further incorporates international best practices for on-site stormwater management. As a result, the plan will set a new standard for environmental planning in Vietnam.

Golden Hills by SOM

SOM’s Master Plan expands and reinforces the local green character of Danang. The vision establishes a new waterfront eco-park which will be designed to restore, protect and enhance the wildlife habitat along 2.7km of river frontage. This open space is extended into a wider park network of linear greenways for recreation and stormwater management. This park system assists in managing flood control, preventing rainwater runoff into surrounding areas, filtering and cleansing grey water and providing a source for irrigating future landscape areas.  These greenways link each neighbourhood directly to the revitalised riverfront. New public spaces are also provided at the heart of each neighbourhood area, ensuring that residents and workers alike are all within a short 3-minute walk to these shaded outdoor spaces.

Golden Hills by SOM

The Master Plan further creates a new development vision for Danang based on its local cultural and urban heritage. The future community will have contrasting areas of lower and higher density residential neighbourhoods. To the north and integrated within the sensitive riverfront setting, quiet residential neighbourhoods feature meandering lanes and soft-edge waterways open and accessible for all. Towards the south and connected to the city, residential areas become more urban in density, articulated with landscaped avenues, tight city-like streets and urban greenways.

Golden Hills by SOM

The plan also provides necessary community amenities to serve a future urban population in excess of 30,000 people.  A complete eco-urban living environment will emerge on site, including a variety of housing types integrated with schools, kindergartens, healthcare clinics, a hospital, sports & leisure areas and other public facilities. A Village Centre is created at the heart of the community, animated with local shops and cafes surrounding a civic piazza, and establishes a vibrant meeting place for this part of the city.

The plan is also formed on key principles to reduce energy needs and carbon emissions by promoting best practices in mixed-use development in an emerging local context of luxury resorts and single-use residential communities. Instead, this Eco-Urban Community will promote a diverse living community with integrated local services accessed via sheltered and shaded walkable streets.

Here’s some more information from the architects:

BIG WINS THE STOCKHOLMSPORTEN MASTER PLAN

BIG + Grontmij + Spacescape are the winning team for the Stockholmsporten master plan competition to design an inviting new entrance portal into Stockholm at the intersection of a newly planned super-junction.

Stockholmsporten master plan by BIG

The planned Hjulsta Intersection 15 km north of Stockholm where two European highways the E18 and E4 Bypasses converge into a three level intersection, amounts to the largest infrastructure project in Sweden, required due to the growth and development of the capital. The Stockholmsporten competition seeks to define the Hjulsta intersection through sculpting the surrounding landscape and framing the automotive scale of the intersection. Additionally the proposal connects the adjacent Järvafäl tet recreation area through a continuous promenade to the distinctive natural and heritage-laden environment and adds new qualities to the site. BIG was selected as the winner of the invited competition among proposals from Norwegian Snøhetta, Danish landscape architect Kristine Jensen and Swedish Erik Giudice Architects.

Stockholmsporten master plan by BIG

”The magnificent bowl shape of this proposal is an ingenious solution which interacts with the geometry of the intersection while at the same time creating an urban context linking together the different areas surrounding the site. Possibilities of adding qualities and activities to the place which will benefit residents are very elegantly added.” Jury Report, Stockholmsporten.

Stockholmsporten master plan by BIG

Prior to this competition, the intersecting roads would create physical and visual barriers between the surrounding neighborhoods and divide them into four areas totaling 580.000 m2. BIG’s proposal, the Energy Valley, re-connects these in an un-hierarchical and democratic way through a continuous circular bike and pedestrian loop aligned with public buildings and functions, including a shopping- and sports centre, a hammam and a mosque which will attract visitors from Stockholm and its suburbs.

Stockholmsporten master plan by BIG

By introducing natural environments of differing characters within the loop, an Energy Valley in the center turns into a pie shaped park of pine-and oak forests, wetlands, grass lawns and hilly terrain which create a diverse experience when moving in or around the landscape. The surrounding neighborhoods have room to grow, thus expanding infrastructure and developments up to the ridge of the new valley.

Stockholmsporten master plan by BIG

“The Energy Valley is a cross-over between urbanism, landscape, architecture, art and infrastructure into a new neighborhood of Stockholm. Harnessing the momentum of the massive investment in tunnels and highways and putting the excess excavation to use as a man-made valley, we create an interdisciplinary hybrid of logistic, economic, environmental and social infrastructure.” Bjarke Ingels, Founder & Partner, BIG.

Stockholmsporten master plan by BIG

The site has a great potential in serving as a new entryway into Stockholm. This point is turned into a reflective, self-sustaining hovering sphere mirroring Stockholm as it is, new and old, creating a 180 degree view of the area for the drivers on their way in or out of the city.

Stockholmsporten master plan by BIG

30% of the sphere’s surface is covered with Photovoltaic film that faces the sun and produces enough energy to keep it floating while supplying 235 houses in the neighborhood with electricity.

Stockholmsporten master plan by BIG

The Stockholm Sphere is an ever changing icon that marks an entry point to the city and reflects the passing seasons and the evolving urban life beneath it.

Stockholmsporten master plan by BIG

“Traditionally highways split adjacent areas into disconnected neighborhoods – a good side and a bad side. Our biggest challenge was how to create the maximum benefit by connecting the four parts cut by the intersecting highways. The intersection is thus tamed by the connecting link that circumscribes it.” Jakob Lange, Partner-in-Charge, Stockholmsporten, BIG.

Here are some more details from the architects:

A ROLLING MASTER PLAN

The Swedish architecture office Jagnefalt Milton has been awarded in the Norwegian master plan competition for the city of Åndalsnes. Their proposal was a to have buildings rolling through the city on rails. On Friday the jury went public with the awarded master plans for the city of Åndalsnes.

“We are really happy that the jury took our proposal serious, its not only a good proposal which we are very proud of, it´s also fully doable,” says Carl Jägnefält one of the two founders of Jägnefält Milton.

The jury was impressed by the swedes proposals that did not propose new city blocks, public squares, boardwalks etcetera, but instead focused entirely on the existing rail road network and created something unexpected from it. They were also moved by the presentation material which they thought had a surreal mood with a magic and Tarkovsky-esk atmosphere that contrasted well with the sober and technical plans and axonometric drawings.

Here’s some more information about the project:

New Central Business District, Wenzhou

HENN ARCHITEKTEN have won the first prize in the international competition to design the new Central Business District in Wenzhou, China. The proposal was designed by HENN ARCHITEKTEN’s Design & Research Studio HENN StudioB.

Central Business District Wenzhou by Henn Architekten

Wenzhou lies within a mountainous region of Zhejiang Province where the Ou Jiang River meets the East China Sea. The traditional trading town opened to foreign trade in 1876 and as an international port is one of today’s key production locations for the consumer goods industry in China. The centrepiece of the future Central Business District comprises offices, a five-star hotel, commercial space and a public park.

Central Business District Wenzhou by Henn Architekten

The Wenzhou coastline is interspersed with an intricate network of small and large rivers. The proposed design picks up on the river delta image and transposes it onto an organic park landscape which opens towards the sea. The green corridor leading out of the city continues across the site, where it branches out and forms an undulating connection between the city and the riverfront.

Central Business District Wenzhou by Henn Architekten

On ground level, this architectural landscape merges with the flowing form of the buildings and simultaneously traces the movement of their users. The five towers stand in a staggered row to ensure a largely unrestricted view of the river.

Central Business District Wenzhou by Henn Architekten

Their height reflects that of the surrounding buildings in the south west and rises in a wave towards the river, where it defines the edge of the city on the bank of the Ou Jiang.

Central Business District Wenzhou by Henn Architekten

The rolling landscape provides open spaces in various forms – from private inner courtyards and broad pedestrian walkways to urban parks. These layers of space offer access from all sides and encourage interaction between people and places.

Central Business District Wenzhou by Henn Architekten

The competition marks a beginning for the future development of Wenzhou. In this way, the Central Business District is a model for the process of transformation taking place in Chinese cities and their race for a distinct identity in the changing economic climate.
