Core77’s Hand-Eye Holidays #8: Just Mobile AluPen

For our next featured item from the Core77 Hand-Eye Holidays we turned to long time Core77 friend and prolific sketcher and designer, Michael DiTullo to ask him about his preferred weapon of choice for a sketch on the go and he referred us to Just Mobile’s AluPen. A recipient of a Product Design Award from the iF Design Awards, and an Honorable Mention Design Award from RedDot, the AluPen comes with high regard.

The AluPen’s hexagonal aluminum body feels substantial and comfortable in the hand. At 4.75″ it’s long enough that it doesn’t feel awkward, resting gently between thumb and forefinger, yet short enough that it could easily slide in to a coat pocket, organizer or tool roll. As for the quality of the nib, instead of mundanely describing the qualities of the rubber, we’ve included these sketches from DiTullo that we felt better demonstrate, at least visually, the nuances of line work that are possible with the AluPen.

Available Now: Hand-Eye Supply x Man v. Ink x Mary Kate McDevitt Bandana

HES_Bandana16_1.jpg

At Hand-Eye Supply, we recognize that everybody needs a solid bandana. As purveyors of quality workwear we’ve pined for the bandanas of yore: thick, bold, rugged pieces of cloth, hearty enough to wipe the grease from your hands or sweat from your brow but soft enough to be comfortable on the skin. Noting the scarcity of such a bandana from the marketplace, with the exception of vintage re-issues that cost upwards of $50, we made it our mission to procure one that lived up to our standards of excellence.

Enter Fred DiMeglio of Man vs. Ink. Fred hand-dyed the heavy weight cotton bandanas in small batches before discharge printing the patterns, the very method of printing that was used when creating the aforementioned bandanas of yore. As a final step they are triple washed for softness and comfort.

The design was hand-illustrated by Portland, OR’s Mary Kate McDevitt, who also painted the famous Hand-Eye Supply Official Transportation Unit (our cargo bike). Mary Kate riffed on her original design for the bike, refining and reframing it for the bandana context.

The end result of this is a fantastic bandana that exceeds our stringent expectations and we here at Hand-Eye Supply are incredibly proud of them. Available now!

Designed by Matt Willey and Zoe Bather of Studio8, the Magma Sketchbook: Design & Art Direction, has been remarkably popular at the Hand-Eye Supply store. Core77’s Hand-Eye Holidays #3: Falcon Enamelware Tumblers

2012_FalconEnamel_01.jpg

One of our favorite kitchen activities is drinking, so when we were selecting items for Core77’s Hand-Eye Holidays Gift Guide, finding a proper kitchen beverage container was high on our list. Luckily, we came across these brightly colored and classic tumblers from Falcon Enamelware, who have been in the business of fusing heavy-gauge steel with porcelain enamel since 1920. Their durability and relative affordability has earned them their status as an iconic piece of British kitchenware.

The properties of the enamel make it extremely durable and chemical resistant, so it’s perfect for those sorts of beverages that burn the throat a bit on the way down, if you know what I mean. They may chip if dropped but they’ll never break, so if your hands get clumsy and you drop them, the only thing that you’ll lose is your drink.

Core77’s Hand-Eye Holidays #2: Eco-Bridge Penguin Stationery

2012_Eco-Bridge-01.jpg

When building our shopping list for the Ultimate Gift Guide we often confronted the exacting standards of the Studio Snob—a character who likes to keep the world well-arranged and well-known. This set—four pencils made from recycled paper, a small stack of penguin sticky notes, wooden pencil sharpener, gummy eraser and a few facts about the environmental plight of our small tuxedoed friends—is not for the Studio Snob, but rather a young, proto-designer version, a character bent on exploring while staying put.

bow-tie-context.gif

Core77 and Hand-Eye Supply would like to kick off our holiday promotions in style, so we’ll lead with our newest retail collaboration with esteemed bow tie crafters PINO: The Portland Craftsman Bow Tie.

Hewn from workwear-grade Mt. Vernon Mills Pointer Brand 100% cotton brown duck fabric, bound with heavy duty green stitching and fortified with solid brass snaps in the rear, it certainly deserves the title of World’s Toughest Bow Tie, or (if you’re so inclined) the ultimate BRO TIE. It’s like the mutant offspring of Carhartt and Brooks Brothers, working equally well whether you are painting the town or painting some trim.

Hand-Eye Supply x Red Cloud Sailor’s Anchor Knife Sheath

2012_Knife_and_Sheath.jpg

We’re very happy to announce the results of our recent collaboration with Portland’s Red Clouds Collective, so much so in fact that we are putting together a launch deal for it: These high-quality, hand-tooled leather sheaths deliver the value at our list price of $25—but when paired with a $38 Otter-Messer Anchor knife for a combo price of $45 they become the ultimate October Deal!

The result of our recent collaboration with Portland’s Red Clouds Collective, the Red Cloud Sailor’s Knife Sheathe is a high-quality, hand-tooled leather sheath that combines a pared down utility with a rich, warm look—one that will only get better with use and age. It is embossed with both the Red Clouds Collective mascot and the Hand-Eye Supply monogram. The riveted belt loop ensures it will never fall off. It is custom made to snuggly fit the Otter-Messer Anchor knife but will accomodate most pocket knives up to 1-1/4” wide and 4” long.

2012_Knife_and_Sheath_03.jpgRed Clouds Collective individually hand stamps each sheath.

OTTER-Messer, which translates to OTTER “Knives,” was founded in 1840 by the Berns brothers in Königsmühle, Solingen, a region of Bergisch Land. They manufactured simple and strong pocket knives finished with wooden scales, all of them hand made—grinded, stropped (straightened with a leather strap), and polished in their small factory. The otters who lived in the streams and brooks next the little factory inspired the both the logo and the name. Today OTTER-Messer knives are fitted with C75 carbon steel blades, but the knives are still manufactured and stropped by hand. The knives are renowned in Solingen for their many applications and industrial quality.

This anchor inlayed sailor’s knife is a great example of the quality of Otter-Messer knives. Boasting a broad curved blade for control, a weatherproof hardwood handle and the iconic brass anchor inlay, it is functional for a number of applications due to it’s broad “Sheepsfoot Blade” which is ideal for nautical conditions. The absence of a straight pointed blade makes stabbing incidents less likely which is useful both for the turbulent nature of the sea and the turbulent demeanor of shanghai’d or indentured sailors.
