Calling Designers: 2014 Electrolux Design Lab Is Now Open

Simply put, by entering the 2014 Electrolux Design Lab Competition you can pocket some handsome booty, secure a paid internship for a year and learn a lot more than what traditional classrooms will teach you. In short, you will not only win € 5000 but also get a head start to life. YD has been media partners with the Design Lab for over three years now and each year we see a phenomenal growth the value that this design competition brings to young talents.

It was just last year when Hidashi Hamaguchi and Yanko Design’s Design Strategist was a part of the Jury and awarded Adrian Perez Zapata from Colombia, the first prize for his concept – Mab.

For the 2014 challenge, Electrolux Design Lab is looking for students who want to challenge preconceptions. They are looking for ideas that are based on insights around human behavior and ones that can improve the quality of people’s everyday lives. Submissions can be products, accessories, consumables and services for one of the following focus areas:

Culinary Enjoyment

Design challenge: Which inspiring and motivating solutions within culinary enjoyment can be designed to support the desire for healthier lifestyles in future homes?

Fabric Care

Design challenge: How can design solutions within fabric care offer support to the desire for sustainable, stylish and well-managed homes?

Air Purification

Design challenge: How can air purification be designed in a way that enhances the quality of the different activities in our living environments and addresses specific needs?

Booty:

  • 1st prize: € 5000 and 6 months paid internship at Electrolux,
  • 2nd prize: € 3000,
  • 3rd prize: € 2000,
  • People’s Choice: € 1000

The internship takes place in one of the ten design centers that Electrolux has around the globe. The headquarters of Electrolux is situated in Stockholm, Sweden.

First Steps:

You have to submit a description of an idea, a visual sketch illustrating the idea and a description of the consumer benefits.

Timelines:

  • The competition opens for entries March 1 and the submission deadline for the competition is April 6 2014.
  • The best entries are placed online in the beginning of May allowing them instant global recognition.
  • Electrolux professionals will evaluate the concepts and give feedback.
  • The competition is held in stages and the winner is chosen in November 2014.

In 2013 the competition received over 1700 submissions from over 60 countries. This year you can be one of them!

Top 3 concepts from 2013:

Winner – Mab by Adrian Perez Zapata, Colombia

Mab is an automated cleaning system consisting of hundreds of flying mini-robots. The robots clean surfaces by touching them with a drop of water. Mab scans the house, determine the areas to clean and sends the robots flying.

Second place – Atomium by Luiza Silva, Brazil

Atomium is a 3D printer that uses molecular ingredients to construct food layer by layer. Draw the shape of the food you would like to eat and show it to the appliance. Atomium scans the image and prints food in the desired shape.

Third place – Breathing Wall by Jeabyun Yeon, Korea

Breathing Wall is a wall integrated air cleaning concept which pulsates and changes shape as it cleans the air. It can be customized to suit individual needs as it also scents the air you breathe and changes color according to your choice.

Who can enter: Individual undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in a university or graduated 2013 or later. Read the rules here.

What you need to do:
Submit a description, a consumer benefit and a visual sketch of your idea. If it gets picked as one of the top 100+ designs, you’re in for quite a journey.

The important dates:

  • March 1 – Submissions start
  • April 6 – Submissions end
  • May – Release of 100+ concepts

Electrolux Design Lab 20 Semi Finalists 2013

It is always a pleasure to chat with Electrolux Design Director and Head of Jury, Thomas Johansson and this Monday our conversation on Google Hangout was exceptional. Besides discussing the obvious – this years phenomenal entries to the Electrolux Design Lab, we got talking about the typical use of appliances in an Indian household. He was surprised to know that a majority don’t use dishwashers and we still prefer hand-washed clothes to the washing-machined ones! In any case, without further ado, let me announce the Electrolux Design Lab 20 Semi Finalists For 2013.

2D Kitchen by Ermi van Oers

The wall mounted 2D Smart Kitchen with a full set of kitchen appliances automatically prepares your meals. It gives you more space, more time for each other and makes you a perfect cooked dinner.

3F by Germain Verbrackel

The name of this appliance 3F stands for Form Follows Function. This is an appropriate name, since the physical body of this vacuum cleaner can change form and expand to suit the task required.

Air Drop by Jillian Tackaberry

The Air Drop is an air cleaner, which uses plant purification for harmful gasses and filter purification for dust and other particles.

Atem by Małgorzata Blachnicka

Atem is a breathing window panel, which opens your space to the outside world. It provides constant air circulation by letting in only clean air, balancing the air temperature according to your needs and creating an ambiance to your home.

Atomium by Luiza Silva

Top 100 Electrolux Design Lab 2013 Entries Announced

From more than 1700 entries this year, Electrolux Design Lab has shortlisted 100 entries. The submissions encompass 3D printing technology, wearable appliance accessories, concepts that reflect our memories and highlight our senses, new integrated solutions as well as smart technology in social cooking solutions. All of the 100 Entries are hungry for your VOTE, so that they can move to Stage 3.

Stage 3 is when the list narrows down and only fifty odd entries will be further asked to refine their projects and tweak them. Stage 4 will see only 20 best entries making it to the cut and from here eight finalists will be selected. To know what happens in Stage 2, please head here.

Voting

The public can also vote for their favorite concepts. The public voting is open now and will be open until 12th May 23:59 CET. All submissions are here. Yanko Design has selected some of our favorite entries, good luck you people; we look forward to meeting you at the finals!

Electrolux Design Lab 2013 Opens For Entries

Yanko Design is proud to have been a part of Electrolux Design Lab’s evolution and this year we are excited to announce the commencement of the 2013 competition. The idea is king for Electrolux Design Lab 2013 and the competition opens for submissions on 18th February. The theme for this year is Inspired Urban Living and the focus of which falls into three key areas; Social Cooking, Natural Air and Effortless Cleaning. Designers take note, Electrolux Design Lab has made some important changes to the competition so be sure to READ all the instructions thoroughly before you get started.

Amongst the biggest changes this year, is the fact that any design stream student can apply.

The best 100+ submissions around the world will receive instant global recognition; from offering the public the chance to vote and influence the selection, to Electrolux professionals encouraging entrants with constructive feedback throughout the competition.

The competition is divided into 5 Stages and the entry deadline for the first competition stage, a concept description and a sketch, is 15th March 2013.

Over 100 of the best submissions from around the world will be published online in the beginning of April allowing them instant global recognition.

This year’s theme, Inspired Urban Living, asks for all to submit design solutions that consider evolving challenges set to shape our future. The focus of which, falls into three key areas: Social Cooking, Natural Air and Effortless Cleaning.

PRIZES

  • First Prize – 5,000 Euros and a six-month paid internship at an Electrolux global design centre
  • Second Prize – 3,000 Euros
  • Third Prize – 2,000 Euros
  • People’s Choice Award – 1,000 Euros

What do I submit?

Students are to submit only a description of a concept idea and a visual sketch by 15th March for the first evaluation stage. The best entries are placed online, after which the entrants will go through three more selection stages before reaching the finals. This selection method enables entrants to initially concentrate on the most important part: the concept.

Design Director Thomas Johansson is in search of design with relevance and aesthetic appeal. Head of Advanced Development Mats Ekblad is interested in the thought process behind creating innovative design solutions. Insight Marketer Director Julia Lilliehöök is looking forward to seeing design solutions that go beyond products.

Yanko Design Heads To Milan For The Electrolux Design Lab Finals

Exclusive: Electrolux Design Lab Finalists Announced

Yanko Design takes great pride in bringing to you this exclusive announcement! The 30 Shortlisted Entries for the 2012 Electrolux Design Lab have now been narrowed to the Top Ten Finalists. Electrolux Design Lab 2012 – Top 30 Declared!

Electrolux Design Lab’s 10th Anniversary challenge to international design students is to design products that develop the sensory experience of home appliances. The countdown has begun, and after the shortlist of 80 nominations has been tightened to 30 shortlisted entries. The next step will be to announce the Top 10, who will be invited to Milan in October, to present their projects. The jury will as always, include Henrik Otto SVP of Global Design at Electrolux. As media partners Yanko Design will be at the event, keeping you updated via YD, Facebook & Twitter, till the ultimate winner is declared.

Below are the 30 projects shortlisted for the 2012 Electrolux Design Lab. This year has been many of firsts for the Design Lab. First they held a Logo Design Competition in partnership with Yanko Design. After adopting the new logo, they moved on to the Pinterest Competition. Now they have 80 nominees, 30 shortlisted entries and 10 finalists!

Although these 30 projects are very briefly described here, Yanko Design will be showcasing the most intriguing and innovative projects as individual posts shortly.
