The Same, But Different

Metropolis is a project designed to express two opposing bedside tables- one representing day and the other night. The overall shape of the tables are the same, but the details and colors are in complete contrast. Day is portrayed as more calm, friendly and inviting… while the night has more of a extroverted, polarizing, even sinister character.

Undulating Desk

The Nitska desk is a reflection of waves and water movements frozen in time. Soft and gentle-looking yet rigid and durable, the design’s “melting” visual peculiarity is sure to be a functional focal point of any reception area or office space.

Jony Ive & Marc Newson Team Up for (RED)

Iconic designers Jony Ive and Marc Newson aren’t two names I expect to see together on the same by-line but there they are on a one-of-a-kind desk machined from a single piece of aluminum. It almost seems like the perfect marriage – Newson’s typical swoopy/curvy lines in lieu of anything sharp in one of Ive’s favorite materials. The eye-popping table top grabs most of the attention with its oversized cellular surface pattern.

The desk was created for the (RED) auction, Sotheby’s on November 23 along with other iconic objects from Ive’s and Newson’s archives. All proceeds go to (RED), a global non-profit co-founded by U2′s Bono with a mission to prevent, treat, and hopefully one day eliminate the HIV virus.

I would love to see more of these collaborations by world-renowned designers. Imagine a collab between Nendo and Zaha Hadid. What about Lovegrove and Hubert? What other designers would create interesting combinations?

This pen sucks…

Literally! It suctions onto any surface to keep your designer 316 Liner pen handy. Its sucker is both the base for keeping it upright and the cap for protecting the tip – so both parts are easy to keep together. I always forget how useful rubber-suckers truly are (even if they feel a bit 1991!).

Only My Personal Space

Atmos is a must-have desk for those who prefer their own personal space in a crowded office or dorm. The design takes inspiration from Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic structures and Do Ho Suh’s fabric cladding sculptures. What I love about the desk is the cozy enclosure and private space that it creates. It works better than cubicles and monolithic room dividers. Researchers too agree that a personal haven reduces stress and anxiety amongst workers and students.

To keep it enterprising, the Atmos uses translucent fabric and geometric science of triangles create an organic sphere of diffused light that spreads illumination evenly on top of the work surface. This even makes it look more spacious. Atmos can be designed using different fabrics to customize according to user’s specific needs as well as LED color lighting for establishing mood-setting environments.
