Core77 Design Awards 2012: Tell Your Story, The Video Testimonial

There’s still plenty of time to submit your projects to the Core77 Design Awards and as you go to prepare your entries we want to draw your attention to the one of the unique features of our program: the Video Testimonial.

We know that designers are great at showing and telling and, with its 2.5 minute limit, our Video Testimonial entry component is an excellent opportunity to speak “directly” to the jury. We want to hear the ideas and intent behind your project and why you feel it’s worthy for the world’s attention. You can show off or demo your project in a variety of ways depending on what makes the most sense and what’s available to you: hold it up to the camera, point to key elements, take us on the tour or screencast digital files. Over 250 video testimonials were submitted last year and we featured 40 of them in our 2011 Awards Video Gallery which demonstrates the the wide range of approaches that entrants took.

The video component of the Core77 Design Awards allows for increased transparency on both sides of the competition equation, meaning entrants and jurors alike can share not only the results of their efforts but the reasoning behind their choices. Our Jury Teams spread across the world get to announce their Winners, Runners-Up and Notables through a live announcement that we broadcast from their home city. Entrants can hear straight from the jurors why they picked their selection.

Jury_Screenshot_Web.png

The video testimonial can be simple, informal and we even encourage straight-to-webcam —indeed, it must be limited to the 2.5 minute cut-off. It’s a personal addition to your entry, so use it wisely and by all means have fun with it. We encourage you to check out our Video Making Tips page to get some helpful tips and tricks on making your own as well as examples by videomakers Live/Work, Becky Stern, Craig Mod and Liz Danzico, and Dror Benshetrit. It’s your work and your story, so go for it.

The deadline for the Core77 Design Awards is Tuesday April 10, 2012.

Thanks to Stephanie Szerlip for our awesome video.

Core77 Design Awards 2012: Meet the Jury, Mariana Amatullo – Educational Initiatives

mariana_amatullo.jpg

What are the new pedagogical frameworks we will need to conceive of to enable new forms of thinking, perceiving and making? In this Q+A with Mariana Amatullo, Jury Captain for the 2012 Core77 Design Awards Educational Initiatives category and co-founder and Vice President of Designmatters at Art Center, we learn about Amatullo’s lineup of team members and some thoughts on the critical crossroads facing design education.

Core77: Tell us a bit about your jury and why you chose these individuals.

Mariana Amatullo: It was important to me that we not only have diversity and multi-disciplinarity in our Art Center, as our chair of Product Design and Director of the Color, Materials and Trends Exploratory Lab, but is also deeply immersed in driving some of our most innovative educational initiatives at the college, which are broadening how we teach, and whom we teach design education to. Karen is both a leader and an all “hands-on deck” passionate educator who has an innate ability to get her students to exude confidence and inspiration.

Johanna Blakely brings to the jury an amazing academic trajectory and rich insight into social media, entertainment, fashion, intellectual property and contemporary cultural trends that intersect closely with the decisions and choices designers are confronted with on a daily basis. Her research interests and the initiatives she oversees at the Norman Lear Center encompass such wide array of issues, which are of deep relevance to this category—I am thrilled she is participating.

Alexandre Hennen is someone whom I look forward to working together with in the context of this jury. His leadership at Continuum Los Angeles has puts him at the center of remarkable talent and projects; it will be very exciting to count with his voice in our team.

Why is it important to recognize this category in a design awards program?

I think it is essential that we celebrate all dedicated and innovative educators out there. They remain so invisible, so often.

Core77 Design Awards 2012: Meet the Jury, Alice Twemlow – Design Writing and Commentary

AliceTwemlow.jpg

Is design criticism alive and kicking? Celebrating the inclusion of Design Writing & Commentary as a new category of entry for the 2012 Core77 Design Awards, Core77 Editor in Chief Allan Chochinov sat down with Jury Captain (and Chair of MFA in Design Criticism at School of Visual Arts) Alice Twemlow to talk about misconceptions of the field, her “deep bench” of co-jurors and demolition derbies! Core77 Design Award entrants can get a sneak peek at what this year’s jurors will be looking for in the Design Writing & Commentary category in the first of our 2012 “Meet the Jury” posts.

Allan Chochinov: Let’s start from the beginning Alice. For the upcoming 2012 Awards program, Core77 has added a new category called Design Writing and Commentary. As the jury captain for this category, can you first start by telling us a bit about the jury team you’ve selected?

Alice Twemlow: Well I think I’ve selected a magnificent jury team! We’re asking for people to submit writing about objects, spaces and systems—designed things and all the ideas, infrastructures, social and economic forces, uses and resistances that connect and disconnect them. So it’s clear we need a team of jurors who are both experts in their subject areas and sufficiently nimble to cross their boundaries. I also wanted to plant the seeds for a good debate when we meet to discuss our decisions on the entries so I made sure to assemble jurors who take different approaches to their own writing and who have strong views on what matters both in writing and in design.

Michael Sorkin, Distinguished Professor of Architecture and Director of the Graduate Program in Urban Design at the City College of New York, and founder of Michael Sorkin Studio represents academia and architectural practice but also the kind of fiery writing fuelled by political beliefs that I truly admire. With a long career in journalism, Michael is the most seasoned of the group and will help give us the long view, and help to counteract a tendency in much online writing to ignore the long and rich history of design writing.

Maria Popova is the editor of Brain Pickings, a selective online inventory of fascinating information about, and insights into, a vast array of topics. She has an excellent grasp of contemporary issues in design and the interconnected nature of design’s significance. She also appreciates new and experimental approaches to, and venues for, writing which I feel will play an important part in this competition, influenced perhaps by Core77’s own innovations with regard to format and approach.

In examining the political power structures that shape our designed environment and the systems through which designed entities move, Tom Vanderbilt‘s books Traffic and Survival City: Adventures Among the Ruins of Atomic America, represent the direction that good writing about design is headed. Tom understands the difference between point of view and polemic and is a master of deep research.

Core77 Design Awards 2012: The Poster Child of Excellence, Enterprise and Intent (and it’s Free!)

StudioLinCore77Poster_frontandback-1200-xxx.jpg

In keeping with the inclusive spirit of our second annual design awards, everyone is a winner—or at least everyone who registers for the Core77 2012 Design Awards. As those of you who participated last year already know, registrants will receive a complimentary limited-edition poster (while supplies last). Created to promote the design awards, it not only features the essentials about our program, it also tells the story behind its construction.

Designed by our friends at Studio Lin, who also designed our awards identity, the poster’s function is twofold: a call for entries and, on the reverse side, a wall calendar. Displaying the full 2012 year, the calendar highlights key dates and deadlines for the awards program, which registrants and entrants will find particularly handy. Thus, the poster doubles as an organizing tool that captures the ethos of the Core77 Design Awards by recognizing the time and effort that goes into great design.

Furthermore, we’d like to acknowledge the quality of the collaboration and materials that went into the poster itself. Print nerds may be interested to know that the poster uses Mohawk‘s Superfine Ultrawhite Eggshell 70 lb. Text 2/2 stock, and Pantone 021U and Gold 871U. Rhode Island’s Meridian Printing did a fine job of the printing, folding and delivery of this artifact—especially considering that the folding itself is integral to the design, revealing the identity and the making-of the poster in the initial unfurling.

The poster is a wonderful commemorative item for this year’s awards program and we have a bountiful supply of these exquisite display pieces. Register early and we’ll mail you one to display on your studio or classroom wall. Click here to register today!

Core77 Design Awards 2012: Open for Entries

C77DA_2_468x90_blogtopper.jpgc77da_jury_map_L_blog_0116.jpg

Today is the day! We are excited to announce the launch of our second annual Core77 Design Awards! We are officially open for entry and we want to see your most original and impactful design projects from 2011.

It’s great to be back as we further our celebration of excellence, enterprise and intent. Last year, we launched a unique program that addressed many of the challenges of the typical design award paradigm. Our second year builds upon the successes of our inaugural year and we’re excited to bring you our our line-up for year two. The same values persist—leveraging online scale, increasing transparency and decreasing plane fuel—but we’ve refined the recipe to make the awards program more inclusive and celebratory.

Along with a brand new jury, we have some exciting plans for this season:

  • Progressive Categories: Celebrating 17 categories of design endeavor from beloved standards to several newer fields, adding 2 new categories to the stable: Writing & Commentary and Food Design.
  • Dedicated Student Fields: We have always honored student work and the awards offers student entry fields for 15 of our 17 categories.
  • Distributed International Juries: We’ve assigned a Jury Captain (or Co-Captains) to each category, giving each the opportunity to select their own team members from their home city. Check out the line-up below.
  • Entrant Video Testimonials: With the ability to submit short, low-tech video testimonials as part of their entry, we give entrants the opportunity to tell their story directly to the jury and share what jpegs and text cannot: their intent and passion.
  • Live Jury Announcements: Through our 1-week live results period, our juries will reveal their choices and we’ll broadcast these through the awards site so you’ll get to hear first-hand who they picked and why.
  • An Awesome Trophy: All Winners will receive our amazing Core77 Design Awards trophy, which celebrates design as a team sport.

Here’s our full list of entry categories: Consumer Products, Equipment, Soft Goods, Furniture & Lighting, Interiors & Exhibitions, Visual Communication, Packaging, Interaction, Service, Transportation, Social Impact, Educational Initiatives, Strategy & Research, Writing & Commentary (NEW), Speculative, DIY and Food Design (NEW).

But our categories aren’t the only thing to write home about. We have a new global line-up of 20 Jury Captains (with one more to be confirmed). Not only are they true experts in their fields, but they represent 13 cities across 8 countries. Stay tuned as our jury captains announce their full jury teams.
