Principal at Berg
Matt is a Principal at BERG and has been delivering digital products and services since 1995. He was Creative Director for the launch version of the BAFTA award-winning BBC News Online. He also worked at Nokia on RFID/NFC applications of tangible/physical interfaces and the human universal experience of play. Later, he was Director of User-Experience Design for Nokia’s Nseries range. Then he co-founded and designed Dopplr.com, which grew into an influential and popular start-up travel service before being sold to Nokia in the autumn of 2009.

He studied Architecture, qualifying in 1995 RIBA Part II and BArch from the Welsh School of Architecture. He has spoken at events such as Reboot, Ars Electronica, Webstock, O’Reilly’s Etech and FooCamp; is a visiting tutor at the Royal College of Art and has written on interaction design, comic books and planetary-scale, self-replicating robot dogs for 10 years at www.magicalnihilism.com.

Jack Schulze
Principal at Berg
Jack is a Principal at BERG and co-founded the studio in 2005. He obtained his MA in Interaction Design from the Royal College of Art in 2006, previously running an independent design studio for four years.

Jack leads BERG new product development work both for clients and self-initiated work such as the Here & There map. He leads many media design consultancy projects, including previous engagements with Bonnier and the BBC among others.

Matt Webb
CEO and Principal at Berg
Matt Webb is CEO and Principal at BERG and co-founded the studio in 2005. He is responsible for its growth and direction, balancing client partnerships that set strategy and define categories, with internal research and new product development. He brings a broad literacy in business, design, technology and future trends.

He is co-author of the book Mind Hacks, a popular collection of explorations into the workings of the brain. In 2011, he was named by Wired as one of Britain’s top 100 digital power-brokers, and in 2010 by the Evening Standard in their list of 1,000 most influential Londoners. Also in 2010 Matt was a member of the UK Prime Minister’s trade mission to India. He is a regular speaker on the inspirational role of design and technology in culture, and has keynoted conferences in California, Copenhagen, Istanbul and Sydney.

Sara Öhrvall
Vice President of R&D at Bonnier
Sara Öhrvall is Director of Global Research & Development at Bonnier, a family-owned international media group covering all media segments. The role of Bonnier R&D is to identify and develop media-focused business opportunities in the digital space. Bonnier R&D has offices in San Francisco and Stockholm.

Sara’s previous experiences include partner and CEO of Differ, a brand consulting firm, founder and CEO of Ninety, an innovation agency, Head of Niche Concept Development at Volvo Cars in Brussels and Singapore and Manager, Toyota International Marketing Division, Tokyo.

Sara has an MBA from Ume&adot; Business School, Sweden and has studied architecture and design at Parsons School of Design, New York.

Julia Whitney
Head of User Experience & Design Group at BBC
Julia Whitney heads up the BBC’s User Experience & Design Group. Recent launches include the new BBC Homepage (exhibited as one of the Design Museum’s Designs of the Year), the new BBC Weather site, iPlayer on Xbox Kinect, the redesign of BBC Sport online and the BBC’s Olympics coverage across desktop, mobile, tablet and connected TV.

Julia’s career has focused on design and public media. Her previous experience includes various roles at the BBC, and WGBH—an American national producer of public broadcasting based in Boston, Massachusetts—and as a lecturer at Yale University.

Julia has an BA in Mathematics from Brown University and an MFA in Graphic Design from Yale.

Dan Hill
Strategic Design Lead at Sitra
Dan Hill is a Designer and Urbanist. Throughout a career focused on integrating design, technology, cities and people, Dan has been responsible for shaping many innovative, popular and critically acclaimed products, services and strategies.

He works for Sitra, the Finnish Innovation Fund, in their Strategic Design Unit in Helsinki, exploring how design might enable systemic change throughout society, particularly in the context of governance. Prior to Sitra, Dan was an Associate at Arup, Web & Broadcast Director for Monocle, Head of Interactive Technology & Design for the BBC, and he also writes for City of Sound & Domus, amongst others.

Marc Brétillot is a Food Designer. He participates in catering and artisan culinary practices, the creation of new products, innovation consulting for the food industry and organizes international events and performances for galleries and museums. He is the director of the Masters Program and also created the Post-graduate degree of Culinary Design at the Art & Design University of Reims (ESAD), which is where his adventure began when he created the first Research Workshop on culinary design in 1999. He gives conferences at the prestigious cooking school, Ecole superieure de cuisine française Ferrandi in Paris and is also invited to give workshops in France and abroad. He is co author of Culinaire Design published by Alternatives and is currently developing an online platform called thinkingfooddesign.com which brings together industrialists, chefs, designers, historians—and anyone else—who is passionate about food.

Caroline Champion
Philosopher, Taste Explorer and Head of Convergences Culinaires
Caroline Champion is a researcher in literature and aesthetic philosophy, specializing in the field of taste. She is the author of Appetizers, Essay on the relationship between arts and kitchen, published by Fretin Menu (2010) and numerous publications on the question of taste, its language, representations and its challenges; The Journal of Gastronomy, Mode Search and Right of Cities, just to name a few. She has been with Convergences Culinaires since 2008. From 2007 to 2008, she was the Product Manager of Research & Development at Fauchon. She also held cooking classes for the Atelier des Chefs from 2008-2009.

Her experimental art projects include Performance according to protocol “ExpérimenTable” (Louvre, Slick Art Fair, Galerie Polaris, Tuilleries, Metropolitan Fine Arts in Paris, Théâtre de Gennevilliers) since 2009 and Installing scalable “digest palimpsest,” Elaine Levy Gallery Project, Brussels (Jan 2010).

She holds a Master of Modern Literature (Sorbonne, with honors) and a Master of International Management and Project Engineers (Dauphine, with honors).

Alexandre Gauthier
Chef of Contemporary Cuisine at La Grenouillère
Two years ago, when still in his late 20s, Alexandre Gauthier restored the Michelin star to his family’s restaurant in northern France and has gone on to considerable acclaim. Trained locally and then at Alain Ducasse at Plaza Athénée in Paris and at La Pinède in Saint Tropez, Mr. Gauthier loves to bemuse diners with his ingredient combinations, such as quail eggs on crushed Brussels sprouts, with grated garlic and diced grapes. He aims at revealing new tastes and things that would normally go un-noticed in those ingredients. His cooking is precise, delicate, elegant yet provocative, wild and robust.

Alok Nandi
Creative Director and Designer at Architempo
Alok b. Nandi, born in Congo and raised in Zaïre, is based in Brussels, where he has studied engineering, management and film (Licence en Philosophie et Lettres). As a designer, media artist and writer-director, he explores conflicting constraints in evolving and hybrid contexts, via his design label Architempo, with a focus on interaction design, exhibition design and food design.

From hi-tech interactive installations (Extrafiction framework) to lo-tech mise-en-scene (i.e. Cannes Film Festival and Jules Verne exhibition design) and publishing (Casterman Tintin, Flammarion, Glénat), he is dealing with storytelling in multiple media, place and technologies. Japan Foundation Fellow. He is also a regular speaker in international conferences in Asia, Europe, US. Invited professor/lecturer. He has launched Pecha Kucha Brussels, Ignite and is local leader of IxDA (interaction design). From co-design to co-creation, from immersive installations to food systems, from connected story spaces and films to radio chronicles, he is busy with a large palette of narrative modalities. In 2011-12, he has launched coCreationcamp and coCreation cuisine.

Tasos is also CEO of Fabrication Africa, manufacturing 21st century African luxury goods while creating employment for previously unemployed South Africans and Arivi, which aims to address energy poverty with safe and efficient energy products for low income homes in emerging markets.

McLean Sibanda is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa, a registered South African patent attorney and a Partner at Sibanda & Zantwijk Intellectual Property Attorneys. He is CEO of The Innovation Hub, South Africa’s only science and technology park. With over 7 years of R&D experience with De Beers Industrial Diamonds, and a wide experience in innovation, intellectual property, technology transfer and commercialization of intellectual property, he has served previously as Group Executive for Commercialisation at the Technology Innovation Agency, Senior Patent Attorney and Acting Executive Director of the Innovation Fund. He was also involved in establishment of technology transfer offices at higher education institutions, development of patent attorneys for the public sector, as well as the drafting and finalising the legislation and associated regulations on Intellectual Property Rights from Publicly Financed Research & Development. He tutors the World Intellectual Property Organisation courses on Advanced Patent Searching and Biotechnology Law. He has served on a number of boards of start-up companies and currently serves on the boards of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Technifin, Ideanav and the Innovation Hub.

Seelan Naidoo
Group Strategy Consultant for Design SABS Design Institute
Seelan Naidoo is a Strategist serving South African public entities and public benefit organisations. He is the group strategy consultant for design at the SABS Design Institute and teaches strategy at Stellenbosch University. He has worked with diverse public entities, cultural institutions, NGOs and private sector organisations to bring about strategic change; and, was the management head of the Market Theatre, the National Arts Council of South Africa and the Robben Island Museum. He has a Bachelor of Commerce Degree with majors in strategy, finance and information systems; and, a Masters Degree in decision-making, knowledge management and values.

Allon Raiz
CEO of Raizcorp
Allon Raiz is the Founder and CEO of Raizcorp, the only privately-held, unfunded, profitable business incubator on the African continent, supporting in excess of 200 businesses. Allon is the author of Lose the Business Plan – What they don’t teach you about being an entrepreneur. Allon is the Co-Founder of Entrepreneurs’ Organisation South Africa and Rural Roots and sits on the advisory and judging boards of numerous local and international NGOs and Entrepreneurial Awards. Allon has also been appointed by the South African Cabinet to the board of the National Empowerment Fund, South Africa. Allon’s passion and focus on the development of entrepreneurs attracted the attention of the World Economic Forum which awarded Allon as a Young Global Leader. In addition to working towards a Doctorate in Entrepreneurial Studies and Innovation, Allon is an accomplished international speaker who was invited to speak at the World Economic Forum Annual meeting. In 2011, Allon was invited to become a member of the WEF’s Global Agenda Council on Fostering Entrepreneurship, making him one of the 15 global experts in this field.

Co-Directors of Sulki and Min
Sulki & Min is a collaboration between the Seoul-based Graphic Designers Sulki Choi and Min Choi. Sulki studied communication design at Chungang University, Korea and Min at Seoul National University, Korea. Both earned their MFA degrees in graphic design at Yale University, New Haven, US. They worked as researchers in design at the Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht, The Netherlands, from 2003 until 2005. Since coming back to Seoul, Sulki & Min have collaborated with such institutions as Arko Art Center, Insa Art Space, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Festival Bo:m and Hyunsil Culture Studies. In 2006, they held their first exclusive exhibition at the Gallery Factory in Seoul, for which they received the Art Award of the Year from the Arts Council Korea. They have also participated in numerous group exhibitions; Platform Seoul, Graphic Design Festival in Breda, The Netherlands, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art and CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, just to name a few. Sulki & Min were appointed as Graphic Designers of the BMW Guggenheim Lab where they have created an interactive identity system based on on-line participation. Both Sulki and Min teach graphic design and typography at Kaywon School of Art & Design and the University of Seoul, respectively.

Eunkyung Jeon
Editor in Chief at DESIGN Monthly
Eunkyung Jeon is the Editor in Chief of DESIGN Monthly. Her career began as a reporter specializing in the area of design. While interviewing many internationally-known designers, design specialists and covering stories on various design events and celebrations, she became skilled in finding the important design trends across the nation. Her articles reflect such findings; and with it, she further developed her interest in spotting out the hidden values within designs around the world.

Founded in 1976, DESIGN Monthly is one of the most influential design magazines with the longest history among its parallels in Korea. It deals with a wide spectrum of design: communication, product, interior, commercial space, environmental design, web design. It introduces outstanding projects home and abroad and the latest design trends, along with a variety of cultural event and design competition news. DESIGN Monthly now also comes in the form of iPad applications, and its 36 years-worth of contents and articles are now also available on the online digital library, which has just recently been opened.

Kim Hyungjin
Graphic Designer and Partner of Workroom
Kim Hyungjin is a Co-Founder of the design studio & publisher Workroom. He majored in art history at Seoul National University and its graduate school before he studied communication design at SADI. For some time, he made his living by regularly contributing articles to magazines such as Designdb and film magazine Cine 21, and then started his career as a designer when he entered Ahn Graphics, in 2005. After he founded Workroom jointly with his colleagues in 2006, they worked with various clients including National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea, National Theater Company of Korea. Kim translated How to be a graphic designer without losing your soul and Penguin by Design: A Cover Story 1935-2005 into Korean.

Kyungsun Kymn
Assistant Professor and Faculty of Craft and Design at the College of Fine Arts at Seoul National University
Kyungsun Kymn studied visual communication design at Konkuk University, Korea and worked at Cheil Communications Inc. He earned his MA in communication design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. He worked at Hong Design Inc. as an Art Director and received an award from ADCNY, D&AD, Int’l ARC and Stevie Awards. He joined Jindalrae, graphic designers club in Seoul, and led the project, Visual Poetry: Kumgang Mountain, graphic interpretation of Kumgang Mountain in North Korea. The project was awarded Dong-A Arts Prize 2006. He designed the poster of 565th Hangeul Day in 2011 and a poster of 2011 Paju Booksori, the book festival held in Paju, Gyeonggi Province. He was member of committee at TYPOJANCHI 2011: Seoul International Typography Biennale. He is now teaching visual communication design at Seoul National University.

John “Jay” Rogers is President, CEO and Co-Founder of Local Motors, a next-generation car company that is changing the way cars are designed, built and owned. Local Motors is the first automotive co-creation community, and the first company to produce an open source vehicle, the Rally Fighter. In 2011, Local Motors facilitated the co-creation of a military vehicle for DARPA called the XC2V.

This industry is in Jay’s blood; his grandfather owned the legendary Indian Motorcycle Company. He grew up loving cars, and came to develop Local Motors by way of Princeton University, US Marine Corps and Harvard Business School.

President and CEO of Pivot Cycles and BH USA, LLC
Chris Cocalis is the President and Founder of Pivot Cycles and BH Bike’s USA. Both companies are well known for their cutting edge suspension and road bike designs. Mr. Cocalis has been involved in designing and manufacturing high end, cutting edge bicycles for over 25 years and has numerous awards and patents for his designs.

Aurélien François
Community Liaison and Design at Local Motors
From playing Hot Wheels and Dinky Toys with childhood friends to adulthood and the excitement of seeing a vehicle project hit the road after months of teamwork, Aurel lives to share his passion with other designers and car enthusiasts. After graduating from the Institut Supérieur de Design in France, he joined the newly born Local Motors community in 2008 in order to exchange, compete and grow skills with like-minded people from all over the world. A few months later, he got the opportunity to join the Local Motors team in the U.S. to pursue the design development effort of the Rally Fighter in collaboration with the community. His American life experience, complementary to his European background reinforces his conviction that cultural dimension must play the main role in any design approach.

Victor Garcia
Senior Industrial Designer at Peterbilt Motors
As a young man, Victor Garcia was fascinated by all modes of transportation. That fascination led him to study transportation design at Art Center College of Design.

That strong design foundation has given him an opportunity to fulfill his dream of designing a myriad of transportation products. He conceptually designed cars for Mazda, aircrafts for Airbus, yachts for Carver, buses for MCI, semi-trucks for Kenworth and many more. He continues to be inspired by transportation as witnessed by his recent first place winning design, the XC2V Flypmode military vehicle, organized by Local Motors and DARPA. Victor continues his quest for transportation evolution within the heavy truck industry and now works for Peterbilt Motors as a Senior Industrial Designer.

Panthea Lee is the Co-Founder of Reboot, a design firm that works to deepen the impact of socially oriented institutions. Working with a range of public and private sector clients, from the World Bank to the ACLU, Reboot develops innovative policy and programmatic solutions in the areas of governance reform, financial inclusion, education, public health and human rights. Panthea has worked on-the-ground in over 20 countries, including Afghanistan, China, Egypt and Sudan. Prior to Reboot, Panthea was with UNICEF Innovation. She has lectured at McGill University, Columbia University, NYU and SVA, and her work has been featured in publications such as the MIT Innovations Journal, Touchpoint, and Core77.

As Principal in Method’s New York studio, Ted drives the creative approach to projects and helps manage the office overall. Ted brings broad-based experience in the design profession and has worked in diverse industries, including consumer electronics, retail financial services, publishing, enterprise information technology, and media and entertainment.

Ted’s relationship with Method began in 1999 when the office was established as their first Interaction Design Director. In 2003, he left Method to explore an interest in integrated hardware-software design programs. After freelancing for a number of years with industrial design consultancies, Ted started a user interface team within the Industrial Design and Innovation department at Symbol Technologies (later acquired by Motorola). In 2007, he joined Smart Design as a Director of Interaction Design. Clients included Vodafone, HP, American Express, Progressive Insurance, Samsung and LG. At the beginning of 2012, Ted rejoined Method, an award-winning, international team focused on digital product design, brand experience and service design.

When not working, Ted coaches his son’s little league team, takes on thankless jobs like being board president in his building and tries to keep up his bass playing from his days in an indie rock band.

Lara Penin
Assistant Professor of Transdisciplinary Design at the School of Design Strategies at Parsons The New School for Design
Lara Penin is an Assistant Professor at the School of Design Strategies at Parsons The New School for Design where she is a founding member of DESIS (Design for Sustainable Social Innovation and Sustainability) Lab and coordinator of the Service Design Area of Study. Her work focuses on Service Design and Design for Sustainable Social Innovation. She is the Principal Investigator of the project Amplifying Creative Communities awarded with a grant from Rockefeller Foundation Cultural Innovation Funds NYC 2009. Lara is an Architect and Designer with a PhD in Industrial Design and Multimedia Communication from Milan Polytechnic University, Italy and a BA in Architecture and Urbanism from the University of São Paulo, Brazil.

Shrupti Shah
Director at Deloitte GovLab
Shrupti leads GovLab on behalf of Deloitte Consulting LLP’s federal government practice in Washington DC. GovLab Fellows conduct research into critical issues and emerging ideas shaping the public, private and non-profit sectors. Through analysis of Government’s most pressing challenges, GovLab seeks to develop innovative yet practical ways that governments can transform the way they deliver their services and prepare for the challenges ahead. Prior to joining the federal practice, Shrupti was a director in Deloitte UK’s strategy practice where she developed a diagnostic tool to measure and improve innovation in public sector organizations and led a study into where non-profit organizations can bring comparative advantages to the delivery of Government objectives.

Helen Walters
Writer, Editor and Researcher at Doblin
Helen Walters works at innovation consultancy Doblin, part of Monitor Group. Based in New York City, Helen was formerly the Editor of Innovation and Design at Bloomberg Businessweek and has experience editing and publishing content across multiple platforms. She is contributing editor at Creative Review magazine in the United Kingdom while she writes about creativity and design for numerous international publications, including Core77, Design Observer and Fast Company. She regularly participates in discussions about the business of design at conferences around the world and curates the website, thoughtyoushouldseethis.com. She is the author of a number of design-related books. She tweets @helenwalters.

His creative vision and strategic counsel have been valued by clients across a broad range of industries, including Unilever, Diageo, Pepsico, Danone Waters, L’Oreal and many others.

Raison Pure is an international design agency that takes a very multi-cultural approach to brand building and have a proven track-record of creating memorable brand icons. Designer
Independent Parisian Designer François Brument, a graduate of ENSCI-Les Ateliers, is currently researching the potential of digital creation in the field of design. Swapping computer programming for design, Brument has developed a perpetually mutating design style, showcased through creations that oscillate between digital objects and industrial productions. Since 2005 Brument’s works have been exhibited in France and abroad, appearing in the collections of the Fonds national d’art contemporain, the Centre Pompidou, the Musée des arts décoratifs, the Canadian Centre for Architecture and VIA.

Joel Caussimon
Creative Director of Pixelis
Joel Caussimon is the Creative Director of the cosmetic pole at Pixelis, a design agency based in Paris, France. He has worked for diverse famous international brands such as L’Oreal, Coca Cola, Yves Saint Laurent and Jack Daniel’s. Prior to Pixelis, he used to work for Dragon Rouge and Raison Pure. Joel also works on personal projects under Psykotrope’s pseudonym. Combining graphics and photography, his works have been exhibited several times in Paris.

Patricia Tranvouëz
Global President of KENZO Parfums
After graduating from HEC Business School in 1992, Patricia Tranvouëz started her career at Colgate Palmolive before moving to l’Oréal in Indonesia. She then joined LVMH in 2004 first as Global Brand Director at Sephora and then as General Manager of S+, the subsidiary that she founded to create exclusive brands for Sephora, Her mission was to create and launch groundbreaking brands that could rapidly fulfil market needs. In May 2010, Patricia joined KENZO Parfums as Global President to guide the company towards future growth thanks to colourful and joyful communication, sophisticated products and the ability to stage unexpected events.
