Becky Stern is an artist and tutorial maker whose work combines traditional crafts like embroidery, knitting and jewelry-making with electronics and physical computing technologies like Arduino. She heads up the wearable electronics group at Adafruit Industries, an open-source hardware company in NYC. She makes and sells geeky jewelry and shows off her work at Sternlab.

Director of The Madagascar Institute
Hackett is a teacher (Adjunct Professor at New York University), artist, (founder and Director of the Madagascar Institute) and occasional television presenter (Most recently: Stuck With Hackett) Hackett likes his coffee strong, his physics Newtonian and is a firm believer in “Build it, then measure it.” He has not been arrested in over a year.

YURY GITMAN
Founder of Banana Design Lab
Yury Gitman an Artist, Inventor and Toy Designer. He founded Banana Design Lab in 2005 to make lifestyle designs that entertain the soul. Yury also works as a Professor at The Parsons New School for Design where he teaches Interactive Toy Design and advanced concepts in digital design. Yury’s work has featured on CNN, BBC, New York Times, Newsweek, The Discovery Channel, Elle, Bust, Metropolis, Readymade, Fast Company and a range of other outlets.

He lives with his wife and son in Brooklyn NY, from where the three explore the globe and its wonders.

ROBERT FALUDI
Collaborative Strategy Leader at Digi International
Robert Faludi is a professor in the MFA program at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan and in the Interactive Telecommunications program at NYU. He specializes in behavioral interactions through physical computing and networked objects. Rob is the author of Building Wireless Sensor Networks, with ZigBee, XBee, Arduino and Processing published by O’Reilly Media, 2011. He frequently consults on interactive projects including recent work in entertainment, architecture and toys. Faludi is currently the Collaborative Strategy Leader in R&D for Digi International, with a mandate to forge stronger connections with the maker community, discover outstanding new work, contribute to outside projects, and support innovators. His work has appeared in The New York Times, Wired Magazine, Good Morning America, BBC World, the Chicago Museum of Science & Industry and MoMA among others. He is a co-creator of LilyPad XBee wearable radios, and Botanicalls, a system that allows thirsty plants to place phone calls for human help.

Nicola Goretti is the Founder, Director and Architect of Grupo AG, an office located in Brazil that focuses on national projects in design, architecture and sustainability. He is also a curator and producer of exhibitions on Brazilian and Latin-American design in various cities throughout the country, also collaborating in international projects, judging and several publications. Nicola is also the Editor of Maquete, a magazine about culture and Brazilian identity and curator of government projects on design and products, local craftwork and sustainable economy.

Designer
A graduate in Brazilian Education (PUC/Rio de Janeiro) and Masters in Visual Arts (UnB/Brasília), Lígia de Medeiros has promoted cultural events in Brasília in the areas of design, craftwork and patrimony. She opened a futuristic antique dealer in Rio de Janeiro (1985) and a design studio in São Paulo (1992).

Lígia de Medeiros is currently working on Brasília Faz Bem, a cooperative project dedicated towards a positive divulging of the capital of Brazil through new products, exhibitions, iconography and graphic presentations.

DANIEL MANGABEIRA DA VINHA
Architect and urbanist and Partner at DOMO Architects
Daniel Mangabeira da Vinha was a Trainee in the construction site of a Hotel Projected by Ruy Ohtake in Brasília, accompanied the construction of a Isay Weinfeld’s residential project in Brasília and created the “manual of use” for its project. He was also Architect Partner at Domo Arquitetos with projects in Brazil and Portugal, some of them awarded. He was the Cultural Director at Instituto de Arquitetos do Brasil—DF in 2004 and 2005, organizing several exhibitions and professional and students competitions. He also managed, organized and was the curator at the Special Exhibitions Pavillion at the 4th International Biennial of Architecture in Brasilia in 2005. Was invited in 2008 and 2009 to be the councelor at Fundação Athos Bulcão, an important non governmental institution in Brasília. In 2010 and 2011 was invited to be councelor at the same Brazilian Architects Institute in Brasília.

FERNANDA BOCORNY MESSIAS
Manager of the Programa Brasileiro de Design-PBD (Brazilian Design Program)
Currently the manager of the Programa Brasileiro de Design-PBD (Brazilian Design Program), Messias works at the Ministry of Development, Industry and Exterior Commerce in Brasília, Brazil. She actively participated, and in some cases coordinated, the Brazilian government’s investments in design related projects, workshops and activites throughout the country in the last 10 years.

Amongst others, her exhibitions include the I, II, III and IV Brazilian Design Biannual, and the Products with Ecological Design exhibition.

Bruce Sterling writes science fiction, travels widely, blogs a lot and enjoys theorizing about contemporary acts of speculative culture. He has been a “Visionary in Residence” at Sandberg Institute and Art Center College of Design. His most recent book is a collection of short stories entitled Gothic High-Tech.

MARIA BEZAITIS
Senior Research Scientist, Interactions and Experience Research, Intel Labs
Dr. Maria Bezaitis has extensive history shaping global research and design organizations in the private sector. Dr. Bezaitis’ work considers how social research can catalyze business transformation, the future of context-aware technologies, the changing nature of social values, user experience, collections and seriality, photographic images and identity, and media literacy. Maria’s current focus is on “vibrant technologies” and how to make them more relational and not simply interactive. She has played a leadership role in several cutting-edge social-research organizations, including E-Lab and Sapient Corporation, and most recently served as the director of Intel’s former People and Practices Research group. Maria has published articles on ethnographic practice and the value of the humanities and social science for business innovation, and she has lectured frequently on social research and business innovation to industry and academic institutions. Maria received a fellowship to École Normale Supérieure in Paris.

BERNARDO FERNÁNDEZ
Writer, Story Teller and Graphic Designer
Bernardo Fernández, aka Bef, is a Writer, Story Teller and Graphic Designer. He was born in Ciudad de México in 1972. He has published several novels, Tiempo de alacranes (Scorpion Times), Gel azul (Blue Gel), Ladrón de sueños (The Dream Thief) and Ojos de lagarto (Snake Eyes); the short-stories collections ¡¡Bzzzzzzt!! Ciudad interfase (¡¡Bzzzzzzt!! Interface City) and El llanto de los niños muertos (The Crying of the Dead Children); the children’s books Error de programación (Programming Error), Cuento de hadas para conejos (Fairy Tales for Rabbits), Groar and Soy el robot (I Am the Robot); and the graphic novels Pulpo cómics (Octopus Comics), Monorama and Monorama 2. He is one of the best young Mexican writers of our times and he has won several prizes, such as the national novel prize Otra Vuelta de Tuerca (Mexico), the prize Memorial Silverio Cañadafor best first crime novel (Spain), Ignotus prize of the Spanish Association of Fantasy, Science Fiction and horror. He is currently working on another novel, Hielo Negro [Black Ice], a crime series about a new model of narco-traffic, and a graphic novel Uncle Bill about the famous William Burroughs.

IRINA KHARSEEVA
PR Manager at AR Door
Irina Kharseeva is the PR Manager at AR Door. AR Door is an Augmented Reality developer based in Moscow, Russia. They provide augmented reality experiences across advertising, marketing, gaming, education, tourism, retail, property and many other verticals across many different devices from mobile handset to a standard PC. She is also the PR Director at Fitting Reality where she is responsible for directing the company’s overall marketing and strategic planning programs, and corporate communications.

Irina has also been an English Tutor for Active Enlgish, MICS Distribution Company and Skincare. Previously at MICS Distribution Company, she was an Event Planner. Irina received her education from Lomonosov Moscow State University in International PR and Applied Linguistics.

Zo¨ Ryan is a British curator and writer. She is the Chair and John H. Bryan Curator of Architecture and Design at the Art Institute of Chicago. Her exhibitions include Fashioning the Object: Bless, Boudicca, and Sandra Backlund, Bertrand Goldberg: Architecture of Invention, Hyperlinks: Architecture and Design and Konstantin Grcic: Decisive Design. Prior to working at the Art Institute, Zo¨ was Senior Curator at the Van Alen Institute in New York where she organized numerous exhibitions including The Good Life: New Public Spaces for Recreation. Zo¨ has authored numerous articles and publications, including Building with Water: Concepts, Typology, Design. Zo¨ is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the School of Design at the University of Illinois at Chicago and at the School of the Art Institute where she teaches an interdisciplinary design seminar.

Chris Force is the Editor-In-Chief of ALARM magazine and Design Bureau magazine. In 1995, he founded ALARM Press to share young, contemporary bands with the world outside the independent music scene. Fifteen years later, Force acted on his passion for edgy, gritty design and launched Design Bureau magazine. Like ALARM, Design Bureau strives to support designers working across all fields and to inspire dialogue on innovative design. HELEN MARIA NUGENT
Director of Designed Objects programs at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago
Professor Helen Maria Nugent is the Director and founder of the Master of Design, and MFA program in Designed Objects at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has lectured at institutions such as the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, Northwestern University and Syracuse University. Her exhibition projects include Moholy: An Education of the Senses at the Loyola University Museum of Art, Deceptive Design and Beyond Function: The Art of Furniture for the Chicago Cultural Center and Thick Design for the Betty Rymer Gallery. She serves on the board of the Chicago Scots Association and is a co-founder of HAELO Design.

SAM VINZ
Co-Owner of Volume Gallery
Sam Vinz graduated with a BA in Art History from UW-Madison with an emphasis in 20th Century European architecture. He completed his MA in Art Business from Sotheby’s Institute in London, writing his dissertation on an analysis of the contemporary design market. Sam has spent time working at Phillips de Pury, Carpenter’s Workshop Gallery, Wright Auction and Chase Art Companies. Other than art and design, his interests pertain to anything loud and fast—rock ‘n’ roll and Nascar being at the top of the list.

DEFNE KOZ
President and Co-Founder of Koz Susani Design Inc
Designed products for worldwide known, design oriented companies in different sectors; Furniture, Lighting, Tableware, Household, Sanitary fixtures, Fashion Accessories. Branding Consulting and Art Direction. Common to all her projects are her distinctive design language and the research on the sensorial qualities of materials.

Recent clients include: Panasonic, Nestlé, Unilever – Lipton, Alessi, Foscarini, Leucos, FontanaArte, Sharp, Mobileffe, Liv’it, Pirelli, Cappellini, Slide, Durst, Egizia, Rapsel, Merati, Guzzini, WMF, VitrA, Authentics, Nissan, Casio, Gaia&Gino, MPD, OmniDecor, 888, Tuna, Megaron, Alparda, Nurus, Hamam, Delta, Arcelik and Sisecam.
