We’re gearing up for the annual Architectural Digest Home Design Show in New York that opens today and runs through March 25, 2012. The four-day event is packed with more than 400 exhibitors, including special sections like MADE, which showcases individual craftsmen and their handmade, one-of-a-kind work. It’s exhibitions like this that help balance the mostly commercial offerings on the floor at ADHD.

Not that there’s anything wrong with commercial design, but let’s be honest. I’m not going to be swayed by a display of large, professional-grade stovetops. Luckily, there’s also a promising line-up of design seminars presented by The New York Times featuring speakers from the Sustainable Furnishings Council and Architizer. Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing our friends from the American Design Club (I recently wrote about their current exhibition, “Threat“), as well as Manhattan Forest Products, a bespoke flooring company that salvages and restores old, sometimes historic wood, like the planks of the old Coney Island Boardwalk. There are more woodsy offerings from Brooklyn studios Analog Modern, Strawser & Smith and Think Fabricate, a multidisciplinary studio that made the Brooklyn TV Quilt.
