Architects of Air’s Luminaria: Inflatable Chromatic Catacombs

With the intention of creating an experience where the public can be “moved to a sense of wonder through the particular phenomenon of luminous colour,” the UK based Architects of Air, led by Alan Parkinson have created Luminaria.

Manufactured from a special PVC that has been custom made for the AOA, the Luminaria are inflated to create a series of linked chambers for visitors to explore. The walls are less than one millimeter thick, allowing daylight to create the breathtaking luminous colour experience.

Triaxial domes that draw on inspiration from Islamic architecture, Archimedean solids and Gothic cathedrals punctuate the journey through the Luminaria. These create psychedelic geometric patterns that add another visual dimension to an already mesmerizing experience.
