Although we’ve seen tributes by groups like the Council of Fashion Designers of America, posthumous awards handed out, and even a special edition of Visionaire printed in his honor, seven months after the death of fashion designer Alexander McQueen, he’s now had perhaps his most official, and final, tribute yet. This weekend in his native England, and in the middle of London Fashion Week, a memorial service was held for McQueen at St. Paul’s Cathedral. As was to be expected, given his success and the friends he conspired with, it was a sober yet star-studded affair. Anny Wintour spoke at the service, Bjork sang, and the attending crowd was filled with fellow designers, famous models, and various celebrities, like McQueen’s good friend Sarah Jessica Parker. And though while a sad occasion, to read the stories about the event, in particular the Guardian‘s great coverage, there’s an ample supply of that fashion world vanity and absurdity, from the celebrity’s stopping for press photos before the service, the interesting but perhaps too showy and out-of-place fashion in a church setting (Bjork’s especially), to the playing of a song from Braveheart during the ceremony. In one location, and this location in particular, it all seems a bit much. Though that’s likely exactly how McQueen would have wanted it.
