This Ultra-compact Portable PC Concept Comes With a Mouse, Keyboard, and AR Glasses

Augmented Reality (AR) glasses or Mixed Reality headset – as Apple chooses to call its AR/VR device – represent a leap forward in wearable technology which thrives on the possibility of endless expandability. The best thing about these devices is that they are controlled by gesture and voice-based interactions through onboard sensors and cameras.

Despite their promise, AR glasses remain a niche product, while smartphones, laptops, and game consoles still remain daily drivers. A South Korean designer believes unintuitive gestures and voice commands can be awkward in public settings and since the AR glasses lack physical controls, they are not finding wide adoption. As a solution, he has come up with Cylin, a cylindrical portable PC comprising AR glasses and a controller.

Designer: Sun-il Kim

Currently, AR glasses’ interaction methods feel clunky, especially in a public setting or when you want to get some instant text written. To make the computing glasses a practical tool for all types of environments—whether enjoying videos sitting in a café or writing a column for a magazine in a shared public space. Sun-il Kim has designed Cylin, which functions like a scroll.

It has that slot for the glasses, a scroll-like opening keyboard interface for text input, and puts a mouse in there for precise control. Tying over a virtual keyboard or through gestures is cumbersome and adding a physical keyboard onboard would increase the weight and cost of the AR glasses. The Cylin is thus a handy solution that doesn’t take away the fun but adds required function making it convenient for everyday use in various environments.

As a compact PC in the shape of a small cylindrical body integrating a mouse, keyboard, and AR glasses, the Cylin may seem like a product too much. But given the problem it is trying to address; it may be a viable option. If it does get some heads like us interested, it can definitely start a product category of its own.

Apple Link Bracelet Review: Timeless Elegance Meets Everyday Durability for Watch 10 Titanium

I’ve always been drawn to the look of a classic stainless steel band because there’s an unmistakable feeling of substance around a metal bracelet that wraps around your wrist with a sense of presence. That’s why Apple’s Link Bracelet has been a staple in my lineup since the early days of the wearable’s launch, and with the recent introduction of three fresh colorways for the Series 10 era, I felt it was time to revisit this product in more detail. Many enthusiasts remember how this band was introduced at the same time as the original Apple Watch, and the initial reaction was a mix of admiration for its smooth metal segments and concern over its added weight. Years have passed and the Link Bracelet is still here, and that steadfast endurance makes it a top choice for anyone wanting to enhance their watch’s overall feel. I have tried several bands since, including the rubber Solo Loop for more active days, yet I always return to the stainless steel option as a dependable favorite. The only other band that comes close to matching my fondness is that rubber strap. With this new Link design, I get that almost seamless loop around my wrist, complete with a butterfly clasp that is so flush you can forget it is there.

PROS:

  • Seamless integration with Apple Watch for a cohesive look.
  • Durable brushed stainless steel resists scuffs.
  • Timeless elegance in Natural, Slate, and Gold finishes.
  • Smooth links offer comfortable all-day wear.
  • Long-lasting and compatible with new Apple Watch generations.

CONS:

  • Premium pricing may deter some buyers.
  • Weight could feel heavy for those used to lighter bands.
  • No micro-adjustment option for fine-tuning fit.

EDITOR’S QUOTE:

Apple’s Link Bracelet combines timeless elegance with unmatched durability, seamlessly enhancing the Apple Watch experience.

award-icon

Designer: Apple

Design

Apple’s Link Bracelet is a masterpiece of design and aesthetic refinement, and its design remains one of the most compelling reasons to choose this band for your Apple Watch. At the heart of this design lies the butterfly clasp. Unlike clasps on many traditional metal bands, which often protrude and disrupt the bracelet’s continuity, Apple’s butterfly clasp is fully integrated into the chain of links. This seamless approach allows the clasp to disappear when closed, preserving the bracelet’s fluid appearance and creating a nearly infinite loop around your wrist.

Material choices play a crucial role in defining the character of the Link Bracelet. The Natural color, which I’m reviewing, offers a timeless brushed stainless steel finish that captures light in a subtle yet captivating way. It’s versatile enough to adapt to various lighting conditions—indoors, it presents as a soft matte silver with a hint of warmth, while in natural sunlight, it gleams with a slightly brighter, more polished sheen. This adaptability makes it an excellent match for the Natural Titanium Apple Watch case, maintaining a cohesive yet understated aesthetic.

For those seeking a darker, more dramatic look, the new Slate color delivers. Its titanium-like tone balances contemporary appeal with sophistication. Indoors, Slate offers a muted gunmetal hue that feels bold without being overpowering. Outdoors reveal a slightly lighter, smoky gray quality that enhances its depth and richness. It is an excellent option for pairing with darker watch cases or for making a subtle statement of contemporary style.

The Gold finish, meanwhile, is unapologetically luxurious. This color exudes a bright, attention-grabbing shimmer that appeals to those who favor bold style choices. Whether paired with a matching gold watch or used to create contrast, this finish thrives in environments with ample light, where its reflective qualities can shine.

Each link in the bracelet is meticulously crafted from stainless steel, with a brushed finish on the top surfaces and subtly polished edges. This combination enhances the bracelet’s texture and creates a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. Indoors, the brushed finish looks refined and understated, while outdoors, the polished edges catch the sunlight, adding a touch of sparkle that elevates the overall appearance.

The material choices and finishes contribute directly to the Link Bracelet’s aesthetic appeal but also its tactile experience. Each link is smooth and rounded on the underside, ensuring that the bracelet rests naturally on the wrist. The Link Bracelet’s design transitions effortlessly between dimly lit offices and sunny outdoor settings, offering both versatility and durability as an accessory for the Apple Watch.

Ergonomics

Despite the watch now being in its tenth iteration, this steel Link Bracelet has a timeless feel that has not drastically changed from the early concept. It’s always been intended as a premium option to pair with Apple’s wearable, and that concept remains intact for someone who desires a well-crafted band that complements the watch’s stainless steel or titanium case. There is a distinctive sense that it was formed in the same industrial design space that gave rise to Apple’s minimal lines and smooth edges. Each link is carefully engineered, with precise tolerances that you can see in the way they lock together. You’d think that would reduce rattling, yet I’ve noticed a slight rattle if I shake the watch vigorously. One quirk I’ve observed is an occasional squeak when operating the clasp, often when the mechanism is dirty or dusty. In daily wear, though, the clasp provides a satisfying click that feels reliable.

I’ve spent extensive time using the Link Bracelet across different Apple Watch generations, as well as exploring metal bands from other luxury brands. It can be tricky for a modern smartwatch brand to pull off a metal bracelet that stands alongside heritage watch brands, but Apple’s design language does a good job of combining sleek modern lines with a feeling of luxury. There is a comfort factor that some folks find contradictory since many assume metal means stiffness or hardness. The interesting truth is that it rests naturally on your wrist once you resize the links correctly. I prefer the 12-o’clock side to be one link longer to accommodate the wristbone, ensuring a more comfortable fit. Each segment has a rounded profile on the underside. Because of that, I have never dealt with sharp edges. The ergonomics are fine, though I do acknowledge the heft could feel heavier on small wrists or if you are used to lighter silicone bands. The big tradeoff is that the increased weight offers a sense of security and polish. It never feels flimsy, so I find it suitable as an all-day band that you could take to dinner or a casual office environment. If I were wearing the watch for a high-intensity workout, I would switch to my rubber Solo Loop, which is still an everyday favorite for sweatier activities, though this stainless steel band can handle moderate activity too.

Performance

The Link Bracelet performs exceptionally well in everyday use, combining style with function. Its weight, while noticeable, contributes to a reassuring sense of durability and luxury. I’ve found the bracelet comfortable during long hours at a desk and equally practical for casual outings. The smooth, rounded links glide effortlessly on the wrist without pinching or pulling hairs—a common issue with cheaper metal bands.

In terms of functionality, the bracelet stays securely in place once sized correctly. I’ve worn it through various activities and never felt it loosen or shift awkwardly. The butterfly clasp operates with satisfying precision, making it easy to put on or remove the band without fuss. The lack of a micro-adjustment option hasn’t been an issue for me, as the links themselves are small enough to provide a near-perfect fit. Once adjusted, the bracelet retains its size, even after multiple detachments and reattachments to the watch.

Durability is another strong point. The brushed stainless steel finish resists everyday scuffs better than mirrored surfaces, and any minor marks can usually be buffed out with a microfiber cloth. I’ve even noticed how well the bracelet adapts to different environments. Indoors, it maintains a subdued elegance, while outdoors, the polished edges catch the light beautifully, adding an extra dimension to its appearance.

For those concerned about the bracelet’s weight, it’s worth noting that while heavier than silicone or nylon bands, the Link Bracelet’s distribution ensures it doesn’t feel cumbersome. Instead, the weight adds a premium feel that’s hard to replicate with lighter materials. Overall, it’s a band that performs as impressively as it looks, making it a worthy addition to the Apple Watch lineup.

Sustainability

Sustainability is a growing factor in our tech choices, and the Link Bracelet demonstrates Apple’s efforts to reduce environmental impact through material selection. Stainless steel, a key component, is fully recyclable, aligning with Apple’s broader goals of using recycled metals across their products. The addition of titanium in the Slate colorway further highlights these efforts.

A metal band like the Link Bracelet, built to last for years, offers a more eco-conscious choice compared to disposable, lower-quality bands. Apple designed this accessory to endure, ensuring it remains compatible with new watch iterations without requiring replacement. This longevity makes it a sustainable alternative to frequently replacing bands with every upgrade cycle.

One could use their Link Bracelet for years, maintaining functionality despite minor patina on the underside—a natural mark of use. A quick wipe with a microfiber cloth can restore much of its original shine, reflecting its durability and thoughtful design.

Value

The Link Bracelet’s seamless integration with the Apple Watch is its standout feature. The stainless steel links align perfectly with the watch lugs, creating a cohesive and polished look. Unlike third-party bands that may leave gaps or appear mismatched, this bracelet feels intentionally designed as part of the watch.

In everyday use, the bracelet offers consistent comfort and dependability. The butterfly clasp is discreet and secure, maintaining the minimalist aesthetic while ensuring ease of use. Its brushed finish adds subtle elegance indoors, while polished edges catch the light outdoors, enhancing its refined appearance. Minor scuffs on the brushed steel can be addressed with a quick polish, keeping the bracelet looking sharp.

Apple’s premium pricing reflects the bracelet’s quality and compatibility. It continues to fit new Apple Watch generations, making it a reliable, long-term investment. Available in Natural, Slate, and Gold finishes, the design remains timeless and versatile. For those seeking a band that combines elegance with functionality, the Link Bracelet delivers practicality and style in equal measure.

Nature Meets Concrete: How AI is Reshaping Urban Landscapes in 2024

Concrete doesn’t usually conjure up thoughts of artistry or adaptability—it’s solid, gray, and static. But Amorphous Concrete flips that notion on its head, proving that even the sturdiest materials can grow and evolve. This award-winning project merges high-tech algorithms with timeless materials, creating a system that’s as much about beauty as it is about practicality.

Amorphous Concrete utilizes a “Differential Growth” algorithm – a process that mimics the organic growth patterns you might find in coral reefs or tree branches. The result? Stunningly intricate forms that are as structurally sound as they are visually captivating. These shapes are then 3D-printed into modular concrete units, each one unique, customizable, and ready to take on tasks ranging from outdoor seating to functional art installations. Think of it as nature-inspired design, but with the precision of advanced engineering.

Designer: SA-Math

Amorphous Concrete owes its brilliance to the collaboration between SA-Math, a Shanghai-based digital fabrication studio, and Xiamen Zhichuangchi Technology Co., Ltd. With designers like Cai Chengzhi and Chen Rongsheng at the helm, the project blends computational wizardry with hands-on expertise. The team’s vision goes beyond aesthetics; they’ve crafted a system that embraces sustainability, reducing material waste while maximizing creativity.

A notable implementation of this technology is a nine-unit demonstration product installed as an outdoor landscape sculpture at Shanghai’s Xinyangwan Technology Venture Park. Here, nine interconnected concrete modules come together as a sculptural centerpiece, serving as both art and utility. The adaptability of these modules means they can be reconfigured, extended, or even replaced without waste, making them ideal for evolving public spaces.

By integrating computational modeling and digital fabrication, Amorphous Concrete offers a sustainable and efficient approach to modern construction challenges. Its ability to produce unique, reconfigurable systems positions it as a forward-thinking solution in the field of modular design. It even secured a Red Dot Award: Design Concept this year, validating it as a proof-of-concept that can be applied at scale.

The beauty of Amorphous Concrete lies in its ability to merge the organic with the industrial. It’s a playful contradiction—rugged yet elegant, adaptable yet enduring. It invites cities, architects, and designers to think differently about the spaces we inhabit. After all, if concrete can grow and evolve, why shouldn’t our cities do the same?

Samsung microSD cards pay homage to Sonic the Hedgehog in a way you’ll barely notice

Most smartphones may have now banished microSD cards from their compact bodies, but these tiny storage devices continue to thrive in other areas. Some cameras are switching over to this smaller version of the venerable SD card, and some laptops now have it as a part of their I/O collection. Every year brings some small improvements in their capabilities, whether it’s in speed or in durability, ensuring they won’t be phased out anytime soon.

Although microSD cards are often used to move files from one device to another, they often stay inside those devices for long periods of time. Unlike USB sticks that are relatively easier to pull out and plug in, memory cards sometimes require more than just a few steps to remove them from or insert them inside devices. That’s why they’re often used as semi-permanent storage expansion for devices and laptops, which makes these specially-designed microSD cards a little surprising and perhaps a bit pointless.

Designers: Samsung, SEGA

There are many fictional characters whose names are immediately associated with speed, from DC superhero Flash to video game icon Sonic the Hedgehog. The latter has gotten a bit of notoriety after jumping from games to the big screen, splitting fans between those who love the live-action adaption and those who consider it a disappointment. Regardless, that fandom remains solid and strong, at least enough for Samsung to dedicate a few of its memory cards to the franchise.

As the name clearly states, the new Sonic the Hedgehog PRO Plus microSD cards combine two things that are supposed to be related to speed. Samsung boats read and write speeds of up to 180 MB/s and 130 MB/s, respectively, making them ideal not just for cameras but for some gaming handhelds as well. It’s no surprise, then that Samsung would want to etch the image of Sonic the Hedgehog characters on these cards, whether those claims meet reality or not.

Interestingly, these PRO Plus microSD cards are also being promoted for their durability, much like the resilient heroes of the video game franchise. They are particularly boasted to be resistant to water, high temperatures, X-rays, and even magnetic fields, elements that are poison to data storage devices. The cards are also advertised to resist wear out up to 10,000 swipes, meaning you can exchange the card between two devices up to 5,000 times before it starts dying.

While the microsSD cards themselves sound quite capable, especially for their price tag, the choice of design is a bit questionable. For one, you basically only have the characters’ heads printed on the tiny card, barely identifiable at first glance. The other consideration is that you’ll barely see the markings while they’re inside their respective devices, so there’s very little chance to boast your love for the blue hedgehog and his pals. Curiously, the card with the highest capacity (1TB) doesn’t have the titular hero’s face, calling to question who is really the best among these speedsters.

Handheld gaming PC with modular controls finally solves one of gaming’s biggest problems

There was a time when PC gaming was largely defined by its use of a keyboard and mouse instead of a gamepad. While some titles remain exclusively driven by this combo, many PC games nowadays support both input methods. The rise of handheld gaming PCs, patterned after the Nintendo Switch’s successful design, further narrowed that gap but also magnified one of video gaming’s ugliest warts: non-uniform controller layouts.

You already have the great divide between Xbox and PlayStation, but throw in variants like the Nintendo Switch and unconventional arcade controls and you’ve got quite a mess for gamers whose preferences transcend these superficial boundaries. Since there is no one controller to rule them all, the next best thing would be to let the player decide which design to use, a dream that is finally becoming reality in the AYANEO 3 handheld gaming PC.

Designer: AYANEO

Depending on who you ask, the Xbox or PlayStation controller layout might be more ergonomic than the other, though it mostly boils down to getting used to what the console makers force upon their users. At the same time, some PC games don’t even play well with controllers, which is why Valve implemented unusual trackpads on its Steam Deck handheld. Throw in the flipped position of ABXY face buttons on the Nintendo Switch and the somewhat standard six-button system of arcade fighting games, and you basically have four or five configurations available.

AYANEO’s solution is a modular system it calls Magic Modules, offering a way for users of its upcoming handheld device to swap out controls as they wish, depending on the game they’re playing. You might not have a keyboard available for typing, but a touchpad and buttons emulating the mouse will probably do for most PC titles. Want to mash buttons for Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat? There’s also a Magic Module for that, though you’ll have to make do with a cramped button layout nonetheless.

Not only can you mix and match modules, you can even turn them upside down so that you have two analog sticks at the bottom like a PS DUALSHOCK controller and switch to a normal Xbox layout afterward. It seems that you can also remove the button caps to switch them around, though that’s probably more cumbersome to do than simply removing controller modules.

Amazing as these all may sound to gamers, the real test of the design will happen when the AYANEO 3 is out in the wild. The risk of implementing a modular system is that it might affect the stability, reliability, and durability of the device. Of course, AYANEO is promising the moon, so we’ll have to see whether it can actually deliver this Holy Grail of video gaming.

Hello Kitty and Rubik’s Cube collaborate on a cute kitty cuber

Two big, playful brands celebrated their 50th anniversary this year: Hello Kitty and Rubik’s Cube. The iconic cat (that’s actually a girl dressed as a cat) had a lot of celebrations and collaborations this year. The equally iconic colorful cube also released several products to commemorate a milestone year for them. And before the year ends, these two unveiled a collaboration that would please fans of either or both of them: a Hello Kitty Cuber.

Design: Spin Master

This official Rubik’s Cube is a fully solvable and limited edition cuber that adds a pretty cute twist to it. Instead of the normal colorful cubes it’s known for, you get a mostly white 3 x 3 cube (6 sides of 9 squares) that has minimalist illustrations of items like clouds, bows, and of course the facial features of Hello Kitty. You’re supposed to combine math, art, science, and a bit of kawaii to eventually solve it.

Just like with the Rubik’s Cube, you’ll get challenged (or frustrated, depending on how you look at it) until you are able to solve it and create the 6 faces of the Hello Kitty design it’s meant to show off. Once you finish it, you can attach this character head to a stand that is her body and put on the iconic red bow on her as well. You can display it with pride or also just challenge yourself to do it over and over again.

The Hello Kitty Rubik’s Cube is available at Barnes & Nobles stores for around $20. In case cute cats aren’t your thing, there are also several other Rubik’s Cube Cubers from Sanrio, Marvel, DC Comics, and other pop culture properties available.

In the perpetual race to see, ingest, interpret and share our thoughts on art and design openings, some powerful exhibitions and installations are often lost to a breakdown in the process—and stories, our attempts at amplifying what we find meaningful, do not come together. Rather, our experiences are left as sentences, or fragments of visions. A few openings, long after their pieces have been sold or redistributed or stashed away for another day or decade, linger within us. They transform into memories to be called upon for inspiration. With the following six 2024 debuts, we wish we’d had more time to pause and put something together earlier so that even more people could have seen them in person—but, with 2025 upon us, there will be more opportunities to engage with these artists and designers or the galleries and fairs where they were discovered.

ScanLAB Projects’ FRAMERATE: Rhythms Around Us in the 2024 Tribeca Festival at Mercer Labs

In 2024, the Tribeca Festival’s immersive section found a home within the state-of-the-art, floor-to-ceiling LED exhibition spaces of Mercer Labs. From the slate of pioneering pieces, we were on-hand to experience London-based ScanLAB Projects‘ spatial masterpiece, FRAMERATE: Rhythms Around Us, which documents landscapes as they shift over time. “Together we see the beautiful, creative and destructive forces of nature and humanity,” ScanLAB co-founder Matt Shaw told COOL HUNTING. “It was important to us that people explore this together, and see other people seeing the work. We are a part of this rhythm, we contribute to the cacophony, we are in sync and we catastrophically collide with the beating pulse of our planet.” As we’ve noted before, ScanLAB uses LiDAR scanners to map landscapes in 3D, with each scan “collecting millions of precisely measured and beautifully colored pixels placed perfectly in 3D space.” Through time-lapse, this data transforms into a story. To step into FRAMERATE: Rhythms Around Us at Mercer Labs was to be enveloped in the future of storytelling, photography and technology.

Doug Wheeler: Day Night Day at David Zwirner

From 12 September to 19 October 2024, David Zwirner hosted the exhibition Day Night Day featuring the work of American artist Doug Wheeler. The astonishing large-scale centerpiece, “DN ND WD 180 EN – NY 24” (2024), utilized light to create an illusion of limitlessness, where visitors were tasked with exploring the physical boundaries of the moody, immersive installation. As a phone-free environment, “DN ND WD 180 EN – NY 24” asked attendees to be present and to probe their understanding of perception.

NUOVA’s Time Travel, 1971 at Design Miami

During Design Miami this December, the installation Time Travel, 1971 pieced furniture, lighting and textiles together with performance, fragrance and gastronomy for a theatrical immersion into ’70s style. From Los Angeles-based design group NUOVA (an acronym for “New Understanding of Various Artifacts”), founded by Rodrigo Caula and Enrico Pietra, the two-part portal not only tapped into the colors and materials of the past (including the yellow palette of the plush carpeting and modular sofa, as well as the low table) but elicited nostalgic sensations of Americana.

Piet Hein Eek’s Masterworks at The Future Perfect New York

When the stunning Masterworks exhibition opened at The Future Perfect townhouse in NYC in September, it presented boundary-pushing furniture pieces and decorative wares by beloved Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek. Eek took three years to develop the works with his studio, and all of them reference or are directly drawn from his most significant collections. “The idea for this show was to make masterpieces. If you think about a masterpiece, it’s often one craftsperson who makes something extraordinary that sits above everything else in the world at that moment,” Eek told COOL HUNTING at his opening. “In our case, it’s our whole organization. I am the designer, but I manufacture my products in my own space with a team that is extremely efficient and though the concept is mine they bring something.” In sharing our observation that no side or angle was left unconsidered, even the parts that are rarely, if ever, seen, Eek adds, “we always make backs and bottoms as beautiful as the top.”

Liliana Porter: The Task at Dia Bridgehampton

Open until 26 May 2025 at Dia Bridgehampton, The Task (2024) is a whimsical feast of the unexpected that toys with the concepts of time and perspective. From conceptual artist Liliana Porter, the exhibition pairs her photographic works with a sprawling iteration of her Forced Labor installation series, composed of found items, figurines and other ephemera. Situations are born that question circumstance and scale, and leave room for interpretation. The entire exhibition can be enjoyed with its aesthetic wonder, or dissected for the meaning behind each detail.

Jacques Doucet Furniture at Invisible Collection New York

An exquisite representation of the elegance that made Jacques Doucet so sought after in the late 1800s, Invisible Collection‘s current exhibition dedicated to the couturier and noted furniture and art collector features furnishings and design pieces that embolden his aesthetic spirit. Housed in the contemporary design marketplace’s New York townhouse, the Doucet exhibition—which runs through 25 January—sets stunning tables alongside lighting, sofas, carpets and more. The exhibition was done in partnership with Arnaud de Lummen, the founder and managing director of Luvanis, which owns the Jacques Doucet brand. To bring this collection to life in their townhouse , Invisible Collection commissioned French design duo Garcé & Dimofski, from their roster of talent.
