Donut-shaped coffee table concept has dipping legs that let you hide things

Tables serve different functions and take on different forms, but one kind, in particular, combines both of these in a very aesthetic way. Coffee tables server as visual centerpieces in a room with their pleasing or eye-catching designs, but they aren’t just ornamental pieces of furniture. In addition to serving as a place to put down a cup of coffee or your phone, most coffee tables also have some storage space for reading materials like books and magazines.

Unlike a dining table or bedside table, this combination of storage and aesthetic is a challenge that designers love to tackle, sometimes resulting in beautiful or odd designs. This circular coffee table, for example, almost looks like a donut because of its empty center, but the valley-like crevices give not only a more interesting appearance but also an almost hidden function as well.

Designer: Liam de la Bedoyere (Bored Eye Design)

Coffee tables are often places where books and magazines are either shown off or set aside for future reading. The most common design for this function are drawers or shelves beneath the table top, requiring people to reach underneath to pull out those reading materials. But what if the table doesn’t have a proper “top” or if the space beneath is completely open and has no room for containers?

Valley is a concept that offers an alternative to the conventional coffee table storage design. It comes in the same of a flat donut, basically a disc with its middle cut out. As such, there is really no easy way to introduce a drawer, a shelf, or any other hollow container, at least not without ruining the ultra-simple vibe of the table. Instead, people are invited to stash their books or even some of their belongings in the valleys between the peaks.

The table’s most defining feature isn’t its circular shape but the highs and lows of its unibody design. The dips function primarily as the table’s three legs, but they also create spaces big enough for some things like books, magazines, pouches, and bags. They aren’t large enough for multiple books, depending on the size and thickness, but there are at least three of them to use. As a bonus, the books are easy to see so you won’t have to guess what you’re pulling out.

An interesting side effect of Valley’s unique design is that it seems to be very conducive for collaboration, particularly among two or three people. The rather low height of the table does mean they’ll be sitting on the floor, but that might be fine for younger users. Another ramification of this design is that the table can be made from a single sheet of material, reducing the need for screws, joineries, or even adhesives. Unfortunately, that also makes it more difficult to ship, since it can’t be flat-packed at all.

Volcano-like aroma diffuser concept requires no power or heat to work its magic

It’s almost too easy to take our sense of smell for granted until we feel nauseated and disturbed by foul odors. Although not as sensitive as our furry friends, our noses still play a critical role not only in navigating the world around us but also in conditioning our minds and, in the long run, our bodies toward certain states or moods. After all, the right scents can help calm us down, while incompatible ones can quickly ruin our day.

Aroma diffusers have become quite the fad in the past few years, but it’s only recently that these products have outgrown their uninspiring utilitarian designs. Now they come in a variety of shapes, sizes, or even functions, including ones like this nature-inspired concept that uses zero energy to spread your favorite scents around.

Designer: Jaeyeong Choi

Even before modern essential oil diffusers became popular, people were already using more natural ways to get these scents into the air. Most of them are made from ceramic and require a candle or small fire to make the oil evaporate. Both kinds of diffusers have their own advantages and disadvantages, but the one thing they share in common is that they need some form of energy to work, whether it’s electricity or fire.

LITH is a concept for an aroma diffuser that requires none of those. You simply place a few drops of your favorite aromatic oil on a piece of volcanic rock and that’s pretty much it. The rock’s porous surface absorbs the oil, which is then released naturally into the air via evaporation, the pleasant aroma wafted through the air via natural breezes. No fire hazards, no power cords, no drained batteries, just Mother Nature doing her thing.

While the rock itself is sufficient to be a natural scent diffuser, LITH’s design borrows other themes from nature to complement the aroma with some visual impact. A spiraling cone, made from a mixture of acrylic resin, mica, and jesmonite dye, holds the rock at the top, mimicking the mighty form of a volcano. It creates a bit of a contrast, juxtaposing the gentle scents with the image of an energetic and sometimes destructive mountain.

The combination is definitely a memorable one, presenting a simple yet deeply meaningful design that creates an atmosphere of calm in your personal space. It’s not unlike the ASMR Lava Ball, available from our shop, that similarly uses a volcanic rock to act as a diffuser, but pairs that not only with an eye-catching aesthetic but also with sound and texture for an unforgettable sensory experience.

Industrial Design Case Study: A Baby Formula Quick Dose Dispenser

This Tipsy Flipsy Top infant formula quick dose dispenser is by global ID consultancy Shark Design.

The design is rather complicated, with the intent of making the parents’ job easier:

It offers a streamlined and hygienic method to store and dispense your infant’s formula efficiently.

Here’s how it works: Fill the container with up to 800g/28oz of formula, adjust the chamber to match the grams per scoop recommended for your infant’s formula, assemble the components, and attach the top securely. When ready, simply remove the cap, TIP the container to dispense formula directly into the bottle hands-free, and FLIP it back upright—it’s that simple!

Rotate the lever to dispense each scoop as per your infant’s feeding instructions, reducing cross-contamination by eliminating the need for traditional hand scoopers found in canned formula containers.

The product packaging is designed for both simplicity and effectiveness, featuring sturdy cardboard for durability and an integrated see-through window that enhances functionality and appeal to customers, all while maintaining cost-effectiveness.

An Overhead Rail System for Kitchen Islands

This Tibetus Technical Bridge-Console is an overhead rail system for freestanding kitchen islands. It’s made of anodized aluminum, and its purpose is twofold: It provides focused lighting close to the counter, and you can hang a variety of accessories from it.

Strangely the manufacturer–Italian company Snaidero, they’re basically the Pininfarina of kitchen designs—doesn’t list what accessories they offer. But in the images we can see a stemware holder, a tablet holder, and an option to use either a strip LED or those tiny miniaturized track lighting units, which appear to be directionally adjustable.

I have no idea what utility the racetrack-shaped golden hoop offers; can any of you connoisseurs of high-end kitchens fill us in?

Senyum Design places matte-black Jahten House overlooking jungle in Bali

Jahten House exterior

Matte-black volumes frame views of the surrounding jungle “like a natural painting” at this house in Bali, Indonesia, designed by local architecture studio Senyum Design.

Located on a large 3200-square-metre site in the coastal village of Kedungu, Jahten House is divided across two low-slung volumes connected by a ramped corridor that traverses the undulating landscape.

Senyum Design covered these volumes entirely in textured, black-coloured earth plaster that, depending on the angle of view, either creates a dramatic silhouette or blends in with the dark foliage of the jungle.

Senyum Design has completed a matte-black house in Bali

“The project’s layout was a reaction to the site itself, with the two volumes of the house being carefully placed with the site’s sloping land,” the studio told Dezeen.

“[The black plaster] represents similar textures and colouring as the river rock gorge system below and, because the house is quite large, this materiality also allowed it, within reason, to be hidden amongst the neighbouring jungle,” it added.

A long path through an area of grass creates an axis that leads directly into a living, dining and kitchen area and out onto a terrace and infinity pool overlooking the jungle beyond.

The home’s enclosed ramped corridor leads back towards the site’s entrance, where a smaller volume contains two additional ensuite bedrooms that open onto a concrete terrace.

At both ends of the site, sculptural seating areas with low benches covered in matching black plaster provide vantage points overlooking the landscape.

Views of the surrounding jungle are framed throughout

“This initial sequence for people entering the property shows the size of the land, form of the house, and then hints at the views beyond,” explained the studio.

“Once entering the house through the front door, the immediacy of the view beyond is the most significant moment in the design.”

“This beautiful view is framed as much as possible, to feel like a natural painting of sorts that the living area of the house revolves around,” Senyum Design added.

A concrete floor extends seamlessly from the terraces into the home, with gaps made for existing trees on the site to grow through.

Matte-black plaster has also been used to internally line the semi-external terraces of the home, with off-white plaster used to line the living spaces and bedrooms.

“This provides warmth internally, and works within the duality of light and dark, inside and outside, openness and privacy that the house has tried to play with,” said the studio.

In Jakarta, Ismail Solehudin Architecture created a home with an angular clay-tile roof, based on traditional houses in the area.

Simply Piano Apple Vision Pro app teaches you to play even without a real keyboard

Although VR and AR have been around for a long time, now treated under a wider mixed (MR) or eXtended reality (XR) umbrella, most people still consider these experiences as complicated and unnecessary extensions of our computer monitors. After all, seeing digital objects floating in front of you gets old quickly if all you can do is to “click” on them or type on an invisible keyboard.

The technology has a lot more to offer, of course, especially given Apple’s push for its own brand of “spatial computing.” Unfortunately, the value of mixed reality can really only be appreciated if you have applications and experiences that truly showcase the power of this fusion of the real world and the virtual world, something that this educational music app pulls off with aplomb.

Designer: Simply

Augmented reality, as the name suggests, tries to augment or supplement what we can see in the real world by overlaying digital objects or markers over physical objects. Spatial computing takes it a bit further by making it a two-way street, where the real world’s physics, movement, and position can affect those virtual objects in turn. Of course, you’ll need specialized equipment to experience this, which is what the Apple Vision Pro brings to the table, or to your head, rather.

Simply Piano is an app that originally taught piano lessons using an iPhone or an iPad, but its new Vision Pro incarnation takes learning to the next level. Using Apple’s spatial computing platform, it not only pins a virtual score or guide above your keyboard, it can also detect your fingers, highlight the keys on the piano you need to hit, and let you know if you’ve made a mistake, just in case you out of tune note didn’t clue you in.

The magic happens when you find out that you can do all these things even if you don’t own a piano or electric keyboard. It projects a virtual keyboard that only you can see on any flat surface in front of you, allowing you to learn and practice anywhere without even making a sound. It uses all those same technologies and techniques to map your finger movement to the digital keyboard so you can use it on a plane, on your desk, or really anywhere you can tap comfortably on a table of sorts.

There are, of course, limitations to this learning technique, since Simply Piano won’t be able to check your hand posture, the strength of your key presses (which would be crucial to a real piano), and similar aspects of playing the instrument. It’s still a fun way to learn anywhere without even requiring a physical piano. Presuming, of course, you’re in a place where you can wear the Vision Pro headset.

Pluot and Saratoga Bay Leaf Delights

There are 20 Delights per box. Because they are hemp-derived they are legal in the US and can be shipped to any state. Also available as a bundle for $65 including a jar of June Taylor’s Pluot and Saratoga bay leaf and vanilla bean butter. The butter is also available on its own for $25.

MuseLAB "abandons all notions of the expected" in Mumbai bathware showroom

Mumbai studio MuseLAB has used bulbous mint-green displays and berry-red accents across the interiors of bathware showroom Sorbet.

Located in an upscale Mumbai neighbourhood, the 241-square-metre space is the flagship store of local bathroom brand Aquant.

MuseLAB co-founders Huzefa Rangwala and Jasem Pirani sought to create an interior that diverges wildly from traditional bathware showrooms.

“Sorbet went far beyond recalibrating what ‘conventional’ experience centres could look like,” the duo explained.

Circular shapes are repeated throughout the interior

“It was a sojourn that beckoned one’s inner child to come play, marinate in visual storytelling and create a space that allowed one to willingly abandon all notions of the ‘expected’ at the door,” the duo said.

MuseLAB was asked to design and execute the interior in only six months due to the high rental cost of the space.

“This remained a challenge and it took us eight months to complete the project, including three months of understanding the brand, working on planning and design concepts and preparing technical drawings,” the founders explained.

The duo decided to preserve the deep volume and 12-foot-high walls of the retail space, which was formerly a rug atelier.

“We had to accommodate a large inventory within the store to ensure that our clients were able to display maximum products without making [it] resemble a warehouse or a shop,” the duo told Dezeen.

“This was achieved through intelligent planning by resorting to circles, which were tangential to each other – each circle represented either an enclave for intimate displays of fittings and fixtures or mock bathrooms and live stations.”

Elements all over the showroom reference this overarching circular geometry, from the display units and lighting fixtures to the flooring pattern.

Bulbous funnel-shaped pedestals, curvilinear enclosures and stepped display units are dotted throughout the space – all covered in mint-green paint or mosaic tiles, with the colour borrowed from Aquant’s brand identity.

The sea of mint green is broken up with berry-red details like painted beams and HVAC ducts, as well as the custom-made halo light fixtures suspended from the ceiling.

The pattern of the Kota stone flooring varies between rubble-style jagged chunks and smooth curvilinear inlay, both set in ivory-toned grout.

Outside, the mint-green facade features an entrance porch covered by a glass brick enclosure.

“The facade gives away subtle hints of the visceral rush of hues and elements one encounters inside,” the MuseLAB co-founders said.
