Na Chainkua Reindorf creates "empowering and inspiring" artwork for NYC basketball courts

Tompkins Square Park Basketball Court installation by Glossier

Artist Na Chainkua Reindorf has refurbished two basketball courts in Downtown Manhattan together with cosmetics brand Glossier, creating large-scale artworks to celebrate women in sport.

Building on a four-year-long partnership with the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), Glossier teamed up with Reindorf, non-profit organisation Project Blackboard and the New York City Parks Department to redesign the basketball courts in Tompkins Square Park.

The Tompkins Square Park’s basketball courts were revamped to show support for women in sports

Reindorf, who has previously starred in a campaign for Glossier, reimagined her artworks on a larger and more accessible scale for the collaboration.

She aimed to “add colour and excitement” to the neighbourhood, Reindorf said. To do so, the artist chose standout primary and selected complementary colours that would “enhance vibrancy and energy”.

The decision to incorporate orange was made early in the design process, as it is one of the official WNBA colours.

“I hope residents, visitors and basketball players alike can enjoy the refurbishment both as a functional court and as a piece of public artwork,” Reindorf told Dezeen.

The basketball courts feature depictions of a stylised eye, a recurring symbol in Reindorf’s work.

“The eye places emphasis on the act of looking back, reclaiming one’s agency and expressing confidence,” said Reindorf.

“I found it important to incorporate the same eye into the court design to reference these ideas of empowering and inspiring women both in sports and beyond.”

Project Backboard cleaned the subsurface of the existing basketball courts to make way for Reindorf’s public art.

Cracks in the courts were filled and any dips were levelled, followed by two applications of acrylic resurfacing.

After resurfacing, the artwork was drawn and two to three coats of Acrytech acrylic colour coating, the same materials used for outdoor tennis courts, was applied. The backboard and rims of the courts were also replaced.

In 2023, Glossier shot its Stretch Foundation campaign with the women of the WNBA on the same basketball courts, and the refurbishment is part of an initiative by the company to show support for women in sports.

“Project Backboard’s mission is to renovate public basketball courts and install large-scale works of site-specific art on the surface in order to strengthen communities, improve park safety, encourage multi-generational play and inspire people to think more critically and creatively about their environment,” Glossier director Dan Peterson told Dezeen.

“From our perspective, if you renovate a basketball court and it looks essentially the same as it did before but with new coatings, you end up essentially serving the same population of users that were in the space before the court renovation,” he added.

“In this case, we hope Na’s artwork will encourage more people, but especially families and young women, to feel invited to play basketball in Tompkins Square Park.”

Other innovative basketball courts can be found in our roundup of ten colourful courts from around the world. In London, designer Yinka Ilori 3D-printed a basketball court in rainbow colours.

Natalie Papageorgiadis dresses Bridgerton sets with lashings of silk and gold trim

Bridgerton series three set design

Nine kilometres of ribbon were used for one ball alone in series three of Netflix‘s Regency-era drama Bridgerton, which features decadent set designs that “soaked up materials”.

The latest series of Bridgerton follows the solidifying of the stewing romance between characters Colin Bridgerton (played by Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (played by Nicola Coughlan), who is simultaneously attempting to conceal her identity as Lady Whistledown, the town’s elusive gossip columnist.

Bridgerton’s latest series follows the relationship between Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington

Set decorator Natalie Papageorgiadis told Dezeen how she worked with production designer Alison Gartshore to dress the drama’s many sets, created at various UK heritage locations and an undisclosed film studio in west London.

“We inherited some really fabulous sets [from seasons one and two] to embellish,” said Papageorgiadis. “There were a handful of key spaces that we revisited in the story, such as the Bridgerton and Danbury drawing rooms. And some we reworked, and a large number we created from scratch.”

Penelope Featherington in Bridgerton
Penelope Featherington’s bedroom was updated to reflect her character progression

One of the sets that was adapted for series three was Penelope’s bedroom, which was subtly altered to reflect the character’s increased wealth and independence.

“For the character to develop, we need to see a change in Penelope’s personal space,” explained Papageorgiadis.

Colin Bridgerton and his siblings
Colin Bridgerton’s character has just returned from travelling

Gartshore and Papageorgiadis added more soft furnishings to the character’s bed, mounted extra paintings onto the walls and lined the shelves with petite “pretty” objects finished in the pastel hues associated with the Featherington family.

“We wanted to demonstrate that Penelope’s been spending the money that she’s been making by printing [the] Whistledown [column], but only with smaller items that she could’ve acquired at a market so as not to arouse any suspicion,” said the set decorator.

“She’s also becoming more independent as a woman, so her space reflects that. Especially in the new layers of ‘feminine’ fabrics that have been added in,” continued Papageorgiadis.

The Bridgerton family drawing room
The Bridgerton drawing room also features in the first two seasons

Colin Bridgerton, who at the start of the series has recently returned from a stint of travel, was also given an updated apartment to illustrate his character’s progression.

Maps and journals from regions he visited, including Paris and Marseilles, were used to decorate his home.

“His apartment has a French influence to it,” explained Papageorgiadis, who noted its “rich and romantic yet intellectual feel”.

A Bridgerton set design
Props were sourced from various markets

The team was inspired by the many antiquities, sculptures and furniture pieces at London’s Sir John Soane’s Museum, which formed part of the visual research for series three.

“We imagined Colin to have collected various objects on his travels that he was proud of,” said Papageorgiadis. “They were on display in cabinets and niches – items that are specific to the regions that he went to.”

A UK heritage location
The sets range from real locations to settings created at a studio

Gartshore and Papageorgiadis sourced props from antique and other “cheap” markets across the UK and Europe or made objects from scratch to align with the Regency era in which Bridgerton is set.

“When you inevitably can’t always find everything you need, our process varies from sculpting objects to furniture that has to be put together,” explained the set decorator.

Decadent interior of a room in Bridgerton
Decadent interiors characterise the Bridgerton sets

For example, Bridgerton’s dedicated drapery team created custom drapes from materials including silk and velvet to ensure that the curtains fit the specific dimensions of their sets.

The team also painted into drapes and furniture to give them an “extra lift” on screen and glazed the paintings.

“We often have to embellish furniture,” said Papageorgiadis. “Even in your drapery, you’ve got to express the characterisation.”

A scene at a ball in Bridgerton
Series three includes an abundance of balls

Bridgerton’s third series includes eight different balls, which the set decorator called the “marked difference” between the first two seasons.

“The balls are far more theatrical this time, and we could really have fun with leaning into the themes of these sets,” Papageorgiadis explained, citing the many camera angles that the designers had to negotiate when dressing the sets to achieve continuity between scenes.

“We were dealing with bigger sets, so processing much larger quantities of fabrics and florals,” added the set decorator.

Gold bullion trim at the queen's ball
The Queen’s ball may have caused southern England to “run out of gold bullion trim”

“A funny example that I can think of is that we used nine kilometres of ribbon for the full moon ball. And I’m pretty sure that somewhere through the prep of the Queen’s ball, southern England would’ve run out of gold bullion trim!” she said.

“Shortages like these aren’t uncommon because these sets can be so big. They soak up a lot of materials.”

Papageorgiadis also considered the rise of Regencycore – a style trend influenced by 18th-century decadence, which emerged after Bridgerton first aired on Christmas day in 2020.

“We’re not super conscious of it when we’re in the thick of dressing and filming,” she reflected. “Our design choices are always led by what we interpret from the script and ideas that come through from the story.”

“But you do become aware of it when you step into the outside world,” Papageorgiadis added.

“I do think it’s just a lovely, positive thing. If people watch something and are so moved by it that they feel the desire to have something of that world in their home or at their workplace, then I can only see that as a very positive and affirmative impact.”

Previous otherworldly sets created for the screen include Shona Heath and James Price’s designs for Yorgos Lanthimos’s film Poor Things and Patrice Vermette’s elaborate sets made for the movie Dune: Part Two.

Tutto Bene uses silk and glass details to create "artist's loft" Cubitts store

Glass shelves in Cubitts store by Tutto Bene

Design studio Tutto Bene looked to surrealist artworks and Italian modernist exhibition design when creating the interior for this eyewear store in Islington, north London.

Set in the Angel area, the 60-square-metre store belongs to eyewear brand Cubitts and features an interior concept conceived by Tutto Bene based on the architecture of the space itself.

“It’s a long, slim room with an atelier atmosphere due to the strong contrasts of light and shadow,” the studio’s co-founder Oskar Kohnen told Dezeen.

“The atelier feeling immediately evoked a sense of being at an artist’s loft, this feeling of residential elements mixed with workshop-like rawness is what we wanted to embrace.”

Design studio Tutto Bene referenced art movements and artworks for the interior

To underline this feeling, the studio added decorative pieces that nod to different art movements throughout the space.

“The individual elements of the store design reference surrealist artworks and Italian modernist exhibition design from the 1940s and 50s through play on perspective, rational spatial composition and painterly use of colour,” Kohnen said.

Green silk panels were placed along an entire wall

A skylight lets plenty of light into the Cubitts shop, which Tutto Bene reflected via glass details placed inside the store.

“We didn’t want to over-complicate the dynamic of the space,” the studio’s co-founder Felizia Berchtold told Dezeen.

“Instead we placed monolithic elements within it that offer points of interest and grounding,” she added.

“Each element speaks a clear material language. There are hues of greens and yellow, the transparency of the nile glass, as well as areas of black that balance the space’s abundance of natural light.”

The slim, rectangular store features glass shelves set against a backdrop of sage-green silk from fabric house Holland & Sherry along the entire right-hand wall, in another reference to art and artworks.

“The long shelf stretching the entire length of the space represents an artist’s easel, as well as exhibition tableaus,” Berchtold explained.

“The natural slubs and beautiful colour variation that the silk brings provide a reverent backdrop for the frames displayed on it, whilst being a quiet artwork in itself.”

Along the left-hand side, Tutto Bene placed black storage and display volumes, as well as Cubitts’ eye-examination room.

Kohnen and Berchtold designed many of the furniture pieces personally for the interior, among them an undulating orange seat.

“Most elements are bespoke pieces we designed, including the Uovo chaise,” Berchtold said.

“Then there’s some vintage treasures such as the 1960s glass and chrome chandelier and a group of FontanaArte prism-like pieces that complement and contextualise our fixture designs,  as well as photographic works by Lee Miller, casting the store through her surrealist lens.”

Tutto Bene has previously designed the interior of Cubitts’ first New York store as well as the steel-and-mirror Nightingale restaurant in London’s Mayfair.

How 3D Printing Revolutionized Retail Spaces: A Look Inside PINKO’s Stunning Store

3D printing is often relegated simply to hobbyists and small-time designers. Given its size limits, architects and interior designers haven’t embraced the technology overwhelmingly yet – but fashion brand PINKO is looking to use the technology to create some of the most unique retail spaces ever. Located within the Fiumicino airport, this outlet boasts an interior facade made entirely of 3D-printed modules joined together. The space looks like living tapestry, as the walls have hypnotic depth to them.

Designer: External Reference

Inspired by the brand’s iconic swallows and the intricate details of textile fibers, the design translates into a “skin” that wraps the entire shop. This textured layer is a marvel of engineering. It’s composed of two overlapping “threads” that begin with a simple, linear arrangement before morphing into a complex, swirling pattern. This intricate design adds depth and a captivating richness to the space.

The “threads” cleverly intertwine with the display shelves, creating a seamless integration between form and function. Glass shelves highlight the handbags, while the central area boasts coat racks that echo the color scheme of the threads, showcasing the garments. The final part of the store features a large mirror, adding a touch of spaciousness…. but the magic doesn’t stop there. Embedded within the 3D-printed cladding are programmable luminous glass spheres. These spheres create dynamic light effects, transforming the atmosphere and injecting a touch of sophistication. The result? A retail space that transcends its purpose, evolving into a dynamic and ever-changing setting.

The monochromatic color palette further underscores the design’s brilliance. The neutral tones create a versatile backdrop that complements the clothing on display, fostering a contemporary and elegant atmosphere.

The complexity of the design demanded an innovative approach to production. To achieve the desired form, prototypes were created using a novel technique where robots 3D printed directly onto custom-made molds. This method allowed for precise control and the creation of a truly unique design element. Each wall panel was printed out of PIPG, a polymer composed of 70% recycled PET-G, demonstrating a commitment to eco-friendly practices without compromising on quality.

This aerodynamic design reduces drag, crucial for maintaining the range and efficiency of electric vehicles towing the trailer.

Aerodynamics: The Science Behind the Design

Polydrops has meticulously engineered the P21’s exterior to optimize its aerodynamic efficiency. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations played a crucial role in shaping the P21, ensuring that every aspect of its design minimizes air resistance and maximizes efficiency. These simulations, akin to those used by aerospace and automotive leaders like Boeing and NASA, informed the development of the P21’s unique shape.

The P21 features a vertical wedge-shaped front end that slices through the air, reducing high-pressure zones that typically cause drag. This design departs from conventional travel trailers’ more traditional rounded or angled fronts. By minimizing high-pressure air drag, the P21 achieves greater stability and efficiency, which is crucial for maintaining the range of electric vehicles towing the trailer.

The design of the roof significantly contributes to its aerodynamic performance. The pointed, forward-slanting tip and downward-flowing roof allow air to flow smoothly over the trailer, reducing turbulence and drag. This design enhances aerodynamic efficiency and provides ample headroom inside the camper, creating a spacious and comfortable living environment.

The back of the P21 has a boat tail design that helps control airflow as it leaves the trailer. This feature reduces the turbulence behind the trailer, cutting down on drag and improving overall aerodynamic performance. In Polydrops’ CFD simulations, these design elements make the camper three times more aerodynamically efficient than traditional models.

Interior Design: Practical and Comfortable

The inside of the P21 is just as well-designed as the outside. Polydrops has made use of every inch of space to create a functional and comfortable living area. The interior layout is dictated by the aerodynamic exterior shape, and the designers have done an excellent job of maximizing space while maintaining a sleek, modern look.

This Baroque AirPods Case turns Everyday Tech into a Precious Work of Art

From a boring-looking white case of dental floss to an ornate jewelry box – Eslam Mohammed’s take on the AirPods case is a masterclass in uplifting design through intricate detailing. While most tech companies spend millions trying to make their products sleeker and more minimalist, Mohammed does the exact opposite, harking back to the 17th century to borrow from regal art and architecture of the time. Aptly titled ‘The Case’, Mohammed’s take on the plain white plastic AirPods case is simply bedazzling, as it uplifts your cutting-edge tech to an absolutely new level of art.

Designer: Eslam Mohammed

Mohammed’s take on making tech ornate isn’t a new venture – just in April, he designed a Baroque wireless mouse with a similar interplay between old-world artistry and new-world innovative gadgets. The idea was to turn factory-made mass-produced gadgets into something that looks like something worthy of a museum.

The Case features gorgeous, highly detailed floral carvings wrapped around what is essentially still the AirPods case form factor. The earbuds on the inside stay the same given that they need to be ergonomic and easy to clean, but the case itself looks and feels almost jewel-like. An oxidized silver finish elevates the entire design to new heights, allowing it to catch reflections with the appeal of literal jewelry.

The lip separating the case from the lid gets treatment on the front and the back, with the words ‘Limited Edition’ on the front and a serial number for the limited 100 units on the back. The charging LED on the front also gets a rotating lock mechanism, giving the case a little US uplift.

Sadly, Eslam’s baroque AirPods case is just a concept for now, although I don’t see why he couldn’t release 3D files so people could print their own covers to attach to their existing cases. If you’re reading this, Eslam, we need those CADs right now!

Google Chromecast Rebrands to ‘Google TV Streamer’ and comes with a new flat tabletop design

It was a long time due and now news has it, the new Chromecast version is on the horizon. Though it’s not called the Chromecast anymore and neither does it look the same: as it hides behind the TV HDMI dongle. It is more articulately designed (as seen in pictures) and delivered in a more recognizable set-top-like form factor.

The successor to the Chromecast is likely to be called the “Google TV Streamer.” Pitted as a natural rival to the Apple TV, this new 4K streaming device from Google has a slanted top, resting on a firm block base, and a nice white color theme to it. Of course, it’s starkly different from the compact dongle Chromecast, but it retains the “Google TV” branding, 9to5Google reports.

Designer: Google

The new design of the Google TV Streamer is accompanied by a remote control, which is slightly longer than the previous remote of the Chromecast, and also has some upgrades in design and feel. The steaming box itself seems to be connected to two cables at the back, as apparent in images, which could be for “power and HDMI.”

The remote is led by the D-Pad on the top followed by the back and a gray-colored home button. The volume buttons are removed from the side to appear on the front below the home button, while the voice input on its left is a simple microphone. The Google Assistant branding is gone. What is this indicative of, it’s only for the time to tell, but without the Google labeling the remote looks pretty straightforward.

That said, it does have shortcut buttons for YouTube and Netflix, while at the bottom of the remote face is the power button and the customizable star shortcut. We, as mentioned above, do not have a definite release date or the supposed pricing of the new Chromecast variant yet. The Google TV Streamer could, however, make its debut alongside the new range of Google Pixel phones, smartwatches, and other goodies at “Made by Google,” the tech giant’s next hardware event scheduled on August 13.
