Promotion: design school Istituto Europeo di Design is running a master’s course in retail design at its Florence campus, aiming to equip students with the skills to create brand-recognisable shop interiors.

Starting in November, the Master in Future Store Design at Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) Firenze will be taught in English and available to prospective students with design backgrounds. The course aims to prepare creative students for careers in the changing landscape of retail.

Over nine months, Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos will mentor students to help them design interiors that create connections between brands and customers.

Students will explore and analyse spaces for events, trade shows, temporary exhibitions, pop-up shops and flagship stores, aiming to learn how to create a strong and captivating brand identity.

“In a dynamic landscape characterised by swift changes, the course aims to provide the knowledge and skills necessary for a successful design of retail spaces, recognising the significant transformation occurring in this post-pandemic world,” said IED.

“The evolving relationship between the physical and digital realms is becoming increasingly integral to our lifestyle,” it continued. “The physical store now serves as the focal point for a hybrid experience, seamlessly integrating online and offline through omnichannel services.”

Students will learn how to design shop interiors that reflect a brand’s identity

Graduates with a diploma or bachelor’s degree in design, industrial design, architecture or interior design can apply for the course, as well as those with at least two years of professional experience in similar fields.

Applicants should have skills in conceptualising and creating interior spaces with knowledge of 2D design software Adobe Creative Suite and 3D modelling software such as Rhinoceros or V-ray.

During the master’s programme, students will gain knowledge of interior design, including furniture, lighting and materials, as well as retail communication and marketing strategies.

“The course’s objective is to prepare students for the strategic creation of innovative retail environments, enabling them to evolve into professionals capable of excelling not only in established retail companies but also in broader contexts,” said IED.

The first part of the course will equip students with foundational skills in visual communications, marketing, anthropology and sociology to prepare them for analysing changing trends in the cultural, social and economic aspects of retail design.

The second part of the course will include workshop classes and teachings on emerging technologies, artificial intelligence, lighting design and sustainability.

Throughout the year there will be opportunities for field trips and visits to companies and trade shows, offering insight into the business of store design.

IED was founded by Francesco Morelli in 1966 in Milan and now has 11 campuses across Italy, Spain and Brazil.

Located in the centre of Florence, IED Firenze aims to inspire creativity in keeping with the craftsmanship and artistry the city is known for.

“It plays an active and proactive role, which stimulates a creative learning pattern and a design mindset capable of integrating past and present expertise in innovative capacities for boosting youthful talent.”

Nicer Design creates bird box house numbers to encourage urban birdlife

Polish design studio Nicer Design has created the Numbird collection of digit-shaped nesting boxes for small birds in urban areas.

Nicer Design founder Mikołaj Nicer and his father Paweł Frej developed the plywood boxes to be used as house numbers and increase nesting space for birds.

“We decided to come up with a solution to help small birds quickly increase their populations in urban spaces,” Nicer told Dezeen.

Numbird is a refined iteration of the studio’s previous project, Our Common House, which had a clay casting.

Nicer Design created the updated version from timber to allow it to be commercially produced.

“Analyses showed that ceramics weren’t suitable due to production, transport and weather resistance issues,” Nicer explained.

According to the designers, the timber was also more durable.

“We found moisture-resistant plywood to be a good alternative, offering excellent nesting conditions, greater durability and predictability than regular wood. We treat the plywood with natural oil and recommend reapplying it every 1-2 seasons to extend the product’s lifespan.”

The product’s redesign also allowed it to be turned into a DIY kit, with a self-assembly process that Nicer hopes will engage younger members of the family.

For this reason Numbird was referred to as a “family project” by Nicer and his father.

“Assembling the birdhouses together strengthens family bonds and gives both children and parents the satisfaction of completing a practical task,” Nicer said.

“Numbird serves as a pretext for spending time together.”

The Numbird typeface has narrow angles and indentations, alongside a defined curved, bold appearance, which was developed to adhere to the product’s purpose of a bird nesting box.

The boxes are hidden behind each digit – the dimensions of which directly informed the design of the typeface.

“The birdhouse itself had to meet the standard size requirements for small birds,” Nicer said.

“Its dimensions guided our search for the typeface’s character, limited to the maximum weight of the letters and numbers – extra bold.”

As door numbers are often used together, the studio placed each box centrally behind each digit to ensure their readability when placed next to one another.

“These very specific constraints allowed us to create a unique font characteristic of the Numbird brand.”

The World’s Longest Immersed Tunnel Is Set To Connect Germany & Denmark In 2029

Set to open in 2029, an impressive underwater road and rail tunnel is being constructed in Europe! Dubbed the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel, it will connect Germany and Denmark, crossing around an 11.2-mile stretch of the Baltic Sea. The Fehmarnbelt runner or the Fehmarn Belt fixed link is being constructed by Femern A/S, Rambøll, Arup, and TEC. It is set to be the world’s longest-immersed tunnel, and the world’s deepest-immersed tunnel with road and rail traffic. In these claims, it is important to focus on the ‘immersed’ bit, since there are longer undersea tunnels like the Channel Tunnel. But despite that, this is still a really exciting and extraordinary project!

When the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel is completed, it will connect Rødbyhavn in Denmark and Fehmarn in Germany. It is set to be the shortest route between Scandinavia and the rest of Europe. People will have the option to take a seven-minute train journey or a ten-minute car drive across the Fehmarn Belt, instead of the forty-five-minute ferry. To build the expansive tunnel, 360,000 tonnes of rebar will be required, which is almost 50 times the weight of the Eiffel Tower’s metal structure. The site on the Danish section is the size of around 373 soccer pitches, and nearly 70 vessels were needed to dredge up the tunnel trench. As a whole, about 12 million cubic meters of soil was dredged up from the seabed.

As you can see the tunnel is truly something to reckon with, and it will include 79 standard and 10 special sections. The standard sections will weigh around 73,000 tonnes, with a length of 217 m, and a width of 42m, and a height of 10m. The special sections will be more compact and will be half the length of the standard sections. Although, the width and height will be a little more. The tunnel portions will be first cast on land and then floated into place with the help of a barge. After which they will be submerged, and firmly positioned on the seabed at a depth of 40m.

Such a mighty project will require a mighty budget to back it up. Currently, the budget for the Fehmarnbelt tunnel is around DKK8.4 billion or around US$1.2 billion. The first section of the tunnel was inaugurated by Denmark’s King Frederik X, and it will be sunk soon.

Apple Watch X Leaks: 10th Anniversary Edition Rumored to Feature Larger Display and Magnetic Band

Apple is gearing up to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its iconic wearable, and anticipation around the upcoming Apple Watch Series 10, or possibly Apple Watch X, is building. This milestone edition is rumored to bring significant updates and design enhancements, as suggested by recent leaks and renders from 91mobiles.

One of the most notable changes, as highlighted by 91mobiles, is the larger 2-inch display, the biggest ever on an Apple Watch. This new screen size is set to exceed the 1.93-inch display of the Apple Watch Ultra and the 1.7-inch display of the Apple Watch Series 9. According to the renders, the dimensions of the Series 10 are approximately 46 by 39.7 by 11.6 mm, making it larger than the Series 9 but still smaller than the Ultra.

Another intriguing rumor is the potential redesign of the band connection system. The Apple Watch Series 10 might introduce a new magnetic band attachment system, replacing the current slide-in mechanism. This change could free up valuable internal space, possibly allowing for a larger battery or additional components. However, the CAD renders from 91mobiles do not show clear evidence of this new band attachment system. If it does make its way into the final design, the magnetic connection could contribute to a thinner overall watch.

Got a Rabbit R1? You can now run Android 13 on it and use it like a regular smartphone

This clever little hack basically turns the Rabbit R1 into what it originally was – an Android device – albeit without the limited interface and shoddy AI abilities. YouTuber ‘HowToMen’ showed how he loaded Android 13 onto the R1, and the results are frankly surprising. The touchscreen now works, you can load almost every conceivable app, you can send SMSes, use the camera to take photos/videos or better still, pair it with Google Lens to tap into Google’s AI chops. The scroll wheel now becomes a volume scroller, and heck, the entire device just feels a little more redeemed from its failed past. If you’ve got a Rabbit R1, here’s a clever little trick to make it a little more useful just in case you weren’t happy with its capabilities before.

After disastrous reviews from the tech community, Humane and Rabbit saw their street cred evaporate almost overnight. Humane ended up folding entirely, trying to sell its entire operation to any buyer. Rabbit, on the other hand, has been a little more steadfast… although people who own the R1 never seem to recommend getting it. The result, dwindling sales and the prospect of a total device failure. For people who already ended up buying the R1, instead of being left with a pretty useless device that doesn’t do half the things it promises, it just makes sense to boot Android onto it. After all, the R1 is basically a highly stripped-down version of Android running just an AI app. Turns out, if you want to jailbreak your Rabbit R1, it isn’t too difficult. You can easily load Android 13 onto the device and use it just the way you would a smartphone.

HowToMen basically jailbroke the Rabbit R1 and installed Android 13 on it. Once done, he installed the Lawnchair launcher to give it a distinct Android-esque aesthetic while adding widgets that he developed himself. The result is basically a tiny Android phone that does everything except make actual calls (although someone on Twitter did demonstrate the ability to call people too). To be honest, it robs the R1 of its Rabbit-esque essence… but then again, I’m an advocate for the ‘if you buy it you own it and you can do whatever you want to it’ school of thought.

What you’re left with is a pretty capable device that lets you do much more than you previously could with the R1. It has every feature you’d expect from the Android OS, including a dropdown control center, a working camera (although the camera’s direction has to be toggled from the dropdown control center). The camera can be made to face forwards, backwards, or even downwards as a privacy filter.

The camera interface isn’t too detailed, and just lets you either click photos or record videos.

The screen regains its touch-ability, something that Rabbit disabled for the most part. You can navigate it the way you would any Android phone. The speakers at the back work just fine, and a built-in microphone lets you record voice notes. Notably, the scroller on the side now becomes a volume wheel, and the lock button works just as advertised. Pop a SIM card in and you can even do things like send SMSes to friends. I’m not sure if WhatsApp would work on the device, but that’s worth a try too.

The procedure is pretty simple, from what HowToMen describes. It involves installing Android onto the device from a GitHub repository, and then you can add launchers to your device to customize its appearance. There are, however, two caveats – for starters, that 2-inch screen feels like a massive downgrade, giving you an Android experience that feels like something from 2014. The second, is the massive reduction in battery life. Instead of running just the Rabbit AI app, you’re now running Android 13, with all its apps, a colorful interface, and 128 gigs of storage that let you really use the R1 like a phone – that takes a toll on the battery life of the device, making it last significantly less than the R1 originally would. That being said, it’s still a bit of a win, given that you can do much more with the device than you previously could. For a $199 device, it’s quite an achievement, isn’t it?! Even budget Android phones aren’t that cheap!

Marlon Blackwell Architects unveils "sentinel" design for air traffic control tower in Columbus

Arkansas architecture studio Marlon Blackwell Architects has unveiled designs for an air traffic control tower for Columbus Municipal Airport in Indiana.

At 129 feet tall (39 metres), the project will replace an existing 80-year-old, 78-foot-tall (23 metre) tower on the airport’s grounds. Designs include the addition of a lawn for public programming.

Marlon Blackwell Architects founder Marlon Blackwell said he’d like the tower to serve as a “beacon” of design heritage, referencing the array of modernist architecture constructed in the town in the 20th century.

“We are so honored to have been selected to contribute to the architectural legacy of Columbus,” said Blackwell.

“More than a piece of infrastructure, our hope is that the new Columbus Municipal Airport Air Traffic Control Tower will become a beacon of Columbus’s architectural and design heritage, that will mark a key gateway into the city.”

Renderings of the structure picture a flat, geometric steel and aluminium-clad tower divided into recurrent layers. A viewing area divides the body of the tower and an uppermost volume.

“The design is inspired by the aerodynamic lines of an aircraft, shifting and undulating as one moves around the building,” said the team. “Clad in aluminium and stainless steel, the tower will act both as a sentinel and a beacon for the community.”

The project is funded in part by the Cummins Foundation Architecture Program and the City of Columbus.

Construction on the tower is planned to begin in April 2025.

Custom DeLorean DMC-12 electric plug-and-play kit breathes clean life into an aging classic

DeLorean Alpha5 is DMC’s take on the electrified future, all set to release the modern roadster later this year. The interest in an electric version of the iconic car, made famous by the Back to The Future franchise, took a long time to materialize, but finally, it did.

Coming back to the present, the EV still has some months to roll off the manufacturing lines. Perhaps the perfect time for Electrogenic (UK-based EV conversion specialist) to release a plug-and-play kit for the DeLorean DMC-12. As surreal as that might sound, this drop-in solution will beef up the performance of the otherwise coughing DeLorean. The company has previously designed specialized kits for famous models like Land Rover, Porsche 911, Jaguar E-Type and a custom 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom II for Jason Mamoa.

Well before the Cybertruck honed about the stainless steel exterior, the DMC-12 had it back in the late 1970s. Now Electrogenic is revamping the drivetrain of the gull-winged car and making clever changes to the overall design. All this while maintaining the integrity and signature DNA of the original vehicle. While the official electric DeLorean coming to life pretty soon has a futuristic aesthetic, different from the original, this kit will preserve most of what made it a cult favorite.

Designing an electric drivetrain for any car model is no ordinary feat, let alone doing it for a car from the 1980s. The company states that its version is future-proof and is completely reversible if the client doesn’t like it for some reason. Going back to the old engine seems unlikely for proud DMC-12 owners who’ve decided to take the leap I believe. Coming onto the specifications, the conversion kit has 43 kWh batteries placed right where the original fuel tank would reside. The upgraded DeLorean will have 160 kW of power and 229 lb-ft of torque at its disposal. Like all Electrogenic kits, this one also comes with fast charging capabilities. The only limitation due to the chassis size of the vehicle is the limited range of 150 miles but I’m not complaining.

No cutting of the chassis is required as the electric kit’s battery packaging is designed smartly. Although the battery package adds 40kg to the overall weight of the V6 DeLorean, the powerful new electric drivetrain brings down the acceleration time. It will be capable of going from 0-60 mph in five seconds compared to the ten seconds on the original. Modern EV features are also a novelty here with inclusions like regenerative braking and driving modes depending on requirements. On the inside, the car owners can opt for a bespoke virtual dashboard, Launch Control, improved air conditioning or Apple Car Play.

Designers showcase work "meant to be lived with" at Colony in New York

Cabinets of curiosity and miniature tools based on Shaker furniture were among the works on view at New York design gallery Colony for its second Designer’s Residency, showcasing four up-and-coming talents.

According to the gallery, the residency was first launched in 2022 to provide up-and-coming talents with a more accessible way to enter the industry. For the second cycle, emerging designers Alara Alkan, Maggie Pei, Steph Betesh, and Thomas Yang were selected from the pool of applicants.

Over the course of an eight-month cycle that began in September 2023, the designers were given subsidized studio space and followed a curriculum closely led by Colony founder Jean Lin and art director Madeleine Parsons.

“We began with visual and written exercises created to help the designers tap into both their own voices as well as those of their budding studios,” said Parsons.

In October, the designers moved into the product development phase which included frequent studio visits with Lin and Parsons.

“Market knowledge provided footing for the residency, allowing us to offer not only aesthetic criticism but also feedback regarding a piece’s viability in the luxury furniture industry,” said Parsons.

“It was imperative that the residents made work they believed in but they also needed to consider ‘where it was going to live? Who was going to use it?'”

The Designer’s Residency culminated with each designer debuting a capsule furniture collection at the gallery.

For the Wonder Chamber Collection, Maggie Pei looked to the German tradition of assembling Wunderkammers, cabinets of curiosity that contain different collected items. She also created a plush couch with the remains of a wrought-iron public bench affixed to each end.

The wall cabinet series was produced using painted ceramic tiles, upholstery, and inlaid wood.

Pei also introduced the Apothecary Floor Lamp, with a form based on detailing of ancient Chinese medicine cabinets.

For the Cabinet of Memories, Ama Chair, and Tian Den lighting designs, Thomas Yang combined techniques and references from his Taiwanese and Northern Italian heritages.

“Every object in this collection elevates the reality of daily use to ritual, honoring the phenomenon of an object becoming beautifully ordinary,” said Colony.

With lamps, a cabinet, and a shelf, Alara Alkan’s Temporal Tides Collection wanted to showcase the rawness of wood in different ways.

The Maelen Cabinet incorporates white oak surfaces in which the soft wood was chiselled away to reveal an almost through-material texture.

“The four pieces in the collection explore the boundary between fragility and strength reflected in the lightness of tapered proportions and delicate details that contrast with sculptural monoliths and carved forms,” said Colony.

Betesh’s Entwine Series includes armchairs, side tables, and sconce lights in which the designer mixed different materials, proportions, and scales.

While the lacquered Duo Side Table incorporates legs that layer over an arch-formed table top, the Remnant Side Table includes a calacatta viola marble table tops that extend over a white oak base frame.

According to the designer, the collection is meant to inspire people to create lasting and livable environments composed of objects collected from various sources.

“Pei and Yang recently came out of design programs deeply resonating with their individual philosophies, whereas Betesh and Alkan had both been working in the industry for years gaining their own kind of experience,” said Parsons.

“These are both valuable points of perspective, and Jean and I hoped that they would be able to learn from each other in addition to the programme’s curriculum.”

80% of Mattel Games will be made Color-Blind Accessible by the end of 2024

For generations, classic games like Uno have brought people together for friendly competition. But for the estimated 300 million people worldwide with color blindness, these games haven’t always been accessible. Mattel, the iconic toymaker behind these beloved games, is making a significant stride towards inclusivity. They recently announced that by the end of 2024, 80% of their global games portfolio will be colorblind accessible, with that number rising to 90% by the end of 2025.

This update isn’t a radical overhaul. Instead, it involves subtle design tweaks that ensure gameplay isn’t hindered by color vision deficiency. For instance, Uno will now feature symbols alongside the traditional colors and numbers. A square represents blue, a circle red, a diamond yellow, and a triangle green. This way, players can identify cards based on the symbol without relying solely on color. Similarly, Blokus, a strategic board game, will incorporate patterns on its colored game pieces for better differentiation. These changes extend to other popular Mattel games like Dos, Phase 10, Skip-Bo, and Ker Plunk.

Partnering with ColorADD, a group specializing in colorblind-friendly design solutions, Mattel demonstrates a commitment to thoughtful implementation. This isn’t just about adding symbols; it’s about collaborating with experts to ensure the updates are effective for players with color blindness. The new features go beyond the games themselves. Updated instruction sheets will include dedicated sections for colorblind players, and the packaging will sport a special badge featuring a multicolored eye icon for easy identification.
