Burberry draws on minimalism at New Bond Street store

British luxury brand Burberry has renovated its New Bond Street store, which has been decorated with a minimalist scheme that is populated with striking contemporary furniture.

Set on a prominent spot on the corner of New Bond Street and Conduit Street in central London, the 22,000-square-metre store is split across three levels.

The flagship store has a minimal open-plan interior that is characterised by stark white floor, walls and ceilings which are offset by pops of gold, blue and tones of brown.

The fixtures of the store such as its pillars, staircase, wall displays and mirrors bring a rigid and strict geometry to the space that is complemented by a panelled ceiling which was designed to mimic the brand’s iconic check.

“The minimalist interior is punctuated with an eclectic mix of contemporary furniture, creating a stripped-back setting designed to spotlight key Burberry pieces,” said Burberry.

“Overhead lighting has been crafted to replicate the iconic Burberry Check – a pattern introduced in the 1920s, referencing the brand’s rich heritage.”

Ceiling panels were organised in a gridded formation with spotlights set between each. Lighting strips were added to the panels at various intervals throughout the store and reference the multiple lines of the signature check.

Throughout the store, slivers of checkered tiles punctuate the stark white floors. A classic black-and-white checkered tile covers multiple areas of the interior, zoning numerous different spaces including ready-to-wear and accessory sections.

Other combinations of tiling include a dark brown and black rectangular tiles that are similarly organised in a checkerboard formation.

In contrast to the rigid lines of the store’s more permanent fixtures, furniture brings a softer and more playful look.

Curving sofas and armchairs were upholstered in bold shades of beige, brown and vibrant blue and placed on top of matching area rugs and carpets.

Display tables in blocky shapes are carried throughout each of the store’s floors and sit alongside glass, metal and mirrored vitrines.

Clothing rails draw on an industrial look, with the floor-to-ceiling structures reminiscent of scaffolding systems, however, set apart by their polished and reflective finish.

“We are excited to open the doors of our newly refurbished flagship store on New Bond Street in one of London and the world’s premier luxury shopping destinations,” said Burberry’s chief executive officer Jonathan Akeroyd.

“The store showcases our beautifully crafted products in a luxury setting that connects our customers with our brand and unique heritage.”

In 2022, British designer Daniel Lee was announced as Burberry’s creative director following a shock exit from Bottega Veneta. Soon after his appointment, Lee revealed the “first creative expression” under his direction in the form of an archive-inspired charging knight logo and serif logo font.

Earlier this year, British artist Tom Atton Moore was commissioned to create a series of hand-tufted textile installations for Burberry’s Paris showroom and Rue Saint Honoré store.

Velux and EFFEKT launch Compass Model for designing sustainable buildings

Outside of the Living Spaces Copenhagen site

Promotion: window manufacturer Velux and Danish architecture studio EFFEKT have created a design tool to help architects and developers build sustainably “with little cost and effort”.

The Compass Model is a seven-point framework that aims to streamline different forms of sustainability into the design process from the outset of a building project.

It champions an approach to housing which is equally beneficial for both people and the planet.

Living Places Copenhagen was designed using the Compass Model

The first project built using the model is Living Places Copenhagen, a prototype low-carbon housing development unveiled in the Danish capital to coincide with the UIA World Congress of Architects.

The project saw Velux and EFFEKT use the Compass Model to create new versions of the average Danish home, built with a significantly lower carbon footprint without adding any additional cost.

The project was unveiled to coincide with the UIA World Congress of Architects

The goal, according to Velux, is to make it easier for the building industry to shift to low-carbon construction.

“This free tool offers a simple, holistic framework for the planning, ideation and design of sustainable buildings,” said Velux.

The model uses an incremental approach to offer different levels of guidance at different stages of a project.

Outside of a traditional Danish house
The Compass Model enabled the team to create new versions of the average Danish home

At the initial concept stage, it works around seven “strategic drivers” named Flexible, Quality, Environment, Healthy, Community, Local and Affordable.

For the design stage, the strategic drivers expand into a list of 28 “design drivers”, which cover areas that include durability, lifecycle, material sourcing, acoustics and diversity.

Each design driver is then measured against easy-to-understand “performance drivers”, which come into play in the most advanced stages of the design process.

“The Compass provides an incremental approach to guide the building and development process,” said Velux.

“You’ll be able to make more informed, sustainable design decisions from the start, with little cost and effort. The earlier these considerations are brought into the process, the greater the impact.”

The Compass Model played a key role in the design and planning process for Living Places Copenhagen.

“The Compass Model has proven to be an invaluable asset throughout the design process, serving as a guiding principle for determining the necessary areas of research, informing decision-making, and promoting a critical approach that has enabled us to discover innovative solutions to challenges that cannot be addressed through conventional methods,” added Velux.

Highly repairable Fairphone 5 boasts eight years software update, gets decent hardware out of the box

The Fairphone 4 launched two years ago left a whole lot to be desired, and the sustainability-focused electronics startup from Amsterdam has now launched the next version to reignite hopes. This is the Android 13 powered Fairphone 5 modular phone which is the most repairable device out there for good reason.

The silver lining with this modern-looking device honing a translucent back panel is its whopping five years of OS support and eight years of security patches promised by the ethical company. They are striving to get that number up to 10 years. Also, there’s a 5-year warranty, so you have nothing to worry about for a long time. How much better can that get?

Pros:

  • 8 years of software support and 5 years of warranty
  • Decent hardware specification compared to predecessor
  • Made from ethically sourced material
  • Upgradable storage of up to 2TB

Cons:

  • High price tag
  • Average processor

Designer: Fairphone

Just like their select suite of other products, the Fairphone 5 is made from ethically sourced materials and is designed to be easily pairable at home. Of course, it comes with the freedom to upgrade the hardware, and we’re glad that this time around the device is more of a modern mid-range phone that ignites interest. It has a 6.46-inch OLED display with 1224×2770 resolution and 90Hz refresh rate. On the rear reside the duo of a 50MP primary lens and a 50MP ultrawide shooter. Interestingly, the selfie camera on the front inside the hole punch is also a 50MP shooter.

The number of repairable modules has been increased to 10 as now you can replace the rear camera module and the module having SIM and SD card slots. That beefed-up 4,200mAh battery with 30W charging support is user-replaceable and good for 1,000 charging cycles. Since the phone is targeting a niche set of users, don’t expect it to compete with the current flagships on the market.

It’s powered by the Qualcomm QCM6490 chipset designed specifically for industrial applications and mated to an Adreno 643L GPU and 8GB of RAM. The processor is somewhat similar to the more identifiable Snapdragon 782G in terms of specs. Out of the box, the phone comes with 256GB storage that can be upgraded to 2TB via a separate module. While modular smartphones are not particularly water-resistant, still Fairphone managed to get IP55 water and dust resistance for the device.

For someone who’s looking to buy a mid-range device that has a long-term commitment guaranteed, the Fairphone 5 is a fair recommendation. If so, the device can be pre-ordered right away with shipping in Europe promised on September 14. There are no plans for a US release, but that could change in the coming months. For a price tag of around $750, the Fairphone could just tickle your fancy with the features it has.

Selene Sarı designs air purifying speaker that "cleanses the air through sound and music"

London-based designer Selene Sarı has created an air-purifier called Vox Aeris that is also designed to work as a speaker.

The device’s dual-purpose is the result of three modes of operation – a cleaning mode, a listening mode and a Vox mode, which not only plays music but also cleans the air.

Vox Aeris purifies the air via a scientific process called agglomeration, which Sarı, explained is a method where particles group together, “much like how snowballs form”.

Vox Aeris render
Air particles are pushed into a recyclable “laser-engraved filter” which then filters the air

The agglomeration process is formed via turbulence, which is produced by a vortex created by the device’s internal fans and also by acoustics, created by low-frequency sounds from its speaker.

These methods push air particles into a recyclable “laser-engraved filter”, which then filters the air.

The design includes a number of internal fans

The dials on the device have a mix of speaker and purifier functions. A screen on the device’s top left displays the current environment’s air quality level and the dials on the bottom control the sound’s tone and volume level.

Vox Aeris can be plugged into the wall but it also has an internal battery that can be used as a portable speaker for outdoor use.

Vox Aeris's filter
The device has three modes of operation

According to Sarı, we spend 90 per cent of our time indoors, which she says can be five times more polluted than outdoor environments.

During her research in developing Vox Aeris, Sarı found that there is a lack of awareness regarding air purification and how that impacts health.

“Temporal discounting for air purification is a significant factor deterring us from cleaning our indoor air,” she said.

“This is because even if our surroundings are filled with unsafe levels of particulate matter, they are completely invisible and their most dangerous effects ranging from Alzheimer’s to cancer typically show themselves in the long term, not immediately.”

Drawing of the device
The device’s filters are designed to be recyclable

Sarı aims to show that improving air quality can be seamlessly integrated into our lives to give us increased control over our health. The designer believes that through the design’s dual use, there is an opportunity to address a much larger audience and give more people a chance to breathe cleaner air.

“My aim is to change the perception we have about indoor air quality: cleaning our air should not be a luxury or a neglected chore, it should be something that is seamlessly integrated into our lives and give us control over the most frequent activity we do each day: breathing,” Sarı said.

“Vox Aeris cleanses the air through sound and music.”

A number of dials on the device control sound and purification

According to Sarı, current air purifying solutions tend to be costly and have filters that are expensive to charge, non-recyclable or have an “unappealing medical device outlook”.

In comparison, Vox Aeris was designed to be affordable and also “engaging and approachable”. According to Sarı, it offers an alternative by using low-cost and recyclable fabric filters.

Other air purification projects featured on Dezeen include a wearable air purifier designed by tech company Respiray to fend off allergens and a set of headphones by Dyson that were designed to be used in urban environments to filter air pollution.

Get your best sleep and wake up refreshed every day with this innovative smart sleep mask

Around 70 million Americans are reported to have one form of sleeping disorder or another, and a whopping 30% of adults are suffering from insomnia. We can probably blame part of this on a culture that glorified activity and busyness at the expense of sleep, but now people have become painfully aware of the need for restful slumber to actually keep their productivity up, not to mention live healthy lives. Unfortunately, many quick-fix solutions involve artificial methods like pills or herbal concoctions to force our bodies to shut down, leading to unbalanced lifestyles and dependence on these substances. Fortunately, there are more natural methods with longer-lasting effects, and this advanced sleep mask harnesses the power of sounds and light not only to let you sleep deeply but also to wake up more peacefully and naturally, ready to face the day ahead.

Pills, teas, and other sleeping aids use external substances to help lull the body and mind to sleep. They might not be harmful as far as their ingredients go, but they don’t instill good habits and rely on external factors to induce sleep. They also don’t address the problem of waking up properly from this deep slumber, something that can only really be done with the right kind and amount of light. Fortunately, our bodies can actually be trained to this healthier sleeping pattern, which is what the Aura Smart Sleep Mask brings to the table, or the bed rather, utilizing immersive sounds and light therapy to get you sleeping and waking up in the best ways possible.

Step 1: Pair with Aura app & tailor your Dreamscape.

Step 2: Put on Aura.

Step 3: Enjoy your relaxation sessions with the optional light therapy.

Step 4: Experience total blackout & enter sleep nirvana.

Using the Aura Smart Sleep Mask is as easy as pairing it with the mobile app, selecting your preferred Dreamscape, putting it on, and enjoying the soothing sounds and gentle lights that will put you to sleep like a gentle lullaby. Dreamscape fuses the best of audio experiences, from meditation to ASMR to the melodies of nature, in order to bring your mind and body to a peaceful state. You can even have guided meditation if that’s your cup of proverbial tea. And when it comes for you to finally rouse from slumber, the mask emulates the light of the rising sun to wake you up more naturally compared to the harmful shock of an alarm.

In addition to the sound and light therapy, the Aura Smart Sleep Mask also creates a total blackout in order to let you create your personal sleep sanctuary wherever you are. The Hug 3D memory foam creates a leak-free seal around your eyes without putting any pressure on them, allowing you to blink freely and even keep them open until you finally fall asleep. Comfort, after all, is a critical element in a peaceful slumber, and every inch of the Aura Smart Sleep Mask is designed to be gentle on your head. Even better, this cushion attaches magnetically so it can be removed easily and washed by hand or in a machine.

Whether you’re trying to reclaim your sleep schedule or trying to get some shut-eye in an unfamiliar place, this innovative and comfortable smart wearable will help you get the best sleep and the most peaceful rising each and every time. Say goodbye to those costly pills, put away the inconvenient teas, and harness the power of soothing sounds and therapeutic lights to rediscover the power of rest with the Aura Smart Sleep Mask.

Unlock 2x Productivity: DUEX Introduces a Floating Monitor that attaches to any Laptop

The DUEX Float borrows a clever trick from Christopher Nolan with its external monitor’s vertical arrangement. Panoramic screens are great but they require you to turn your head from side to side to see content. Vertically oriented displays, like the DUEX Float, give you an immersive dual-screen experience without requiring you to look from side to side. This vertical expansion is also a feature Nolan used in Oppenheimer by opting for the IMAX format, which is more “squarish” than panoramic. The IMAX format uses this to fill your vertical peripheral vision too, immersing you in movies without having your neck go wild as you look from side to side.

Designer: Peter Lee

Click Here to Buy Now: $209. Hurry, only 20 left! Raised over $360,000.

Made by the folks at Mobile Pixels (who’ve carved quite a reputation for themselves in the external monitor category), the DUEX Float opts for a vertical layout rather than the company’s previous displays that open out horizontally. The reason, strangely enough, is that a vertical display is just much more convenient if you look at things. Sure, it causes less eye and neck strain for starters… but it also doesn’t require a wide workspace, fitting easily in even small desks without eating into your table space. The DUEX Float’s slim design attaches right to the back of your laptop using 4 magnets, opening up in seconds thanks to its clever dual-hinge system. A single cable connects the DUEX Float to your laptop, powering it as well as working as a display cable for transmitting visual data. And if that wasn’t enough, the DUEX Float’s 1080p display is touch-sensitive too, making it perfect for prototyping/testing apps, for presentations, or for using as a tablet PC in visual design applications.

Dual-screen Mode

Achieve a healthy ergonomic alignment while working on the go.

Presentation Mode

Easily share content with someone in front of you.

Desktop Mode

Turn DUEX Float into an independent display (perfect for gaming).

The DUEX Float isn’t a one-display-one-trick-pony either. It comes with a 3-in-1 design that can be oriented in multiple ways to serve different uses. The most obvious is the vertical external display for double the productivity, but face the display away from you and mirror your screen and you’ve got the perfect presentation setup for meetings and client pitches. The entire display unit detaches off the back of your laptop and can be propped up on a kickstand and used as a side-by-side iPad-style monitor too. These three use-cases make the DUEX Float a pretty versatile accessory. Couple that with how slim it is and you’re left with a gadget that’s more useful and more portable than any external monitor on the market.

Stacked Design – Forget straining your neck and back. Achieve a healthy ergonomic alignment even while working on the go.

Touchscreen for Effortless Navigation – Elevate your work and play with its intuitive 1080P touchscreen display.

Convenient Built-in- Kickstand – The kickstand allows you to utilize it independently without magnetically attaching it to your laptop.

Powerful Connectivity – Features two USB-C ports with pass-through charging, so you can charge devices whenever and wherever you want.

The DUEX Float has a 15.6″ diagonal, making it compatible with virtually any 15″ laptop out there. The 1080p LCD screen has a 60Hz refresh rate, so you’re absolutely not compromising on display quality. Moreover, the DUEX Float also has an abundance of ports on the side, including 2 USB-C ports that support pass-through charging (so you can charge your smartphone or tablet via the floating display) as well as a mini HDMI port for hooking to other gadgets like your Nintendo Switch. The 10-point multi-touch display is supremely intuitive too, giving you a touchscreen display for your laptop – a feature you’ll definitely find mighty useful while presenting, coding, or just simply multi-tasking. Available in a classic matte black finish, the DUEX Float starts at a discounted $199 and comes with global shipping as well as Mobile Pixels’ 1-year warranty.

Sony VLOG-001: A Handheld 3-Axis Stabilized Camera Concept That Resonates with DJI Pocket 2

Sony is an absolute behemoth in the camera space, pretty much dominating the sensor market with its high-quality CMOS sensors that form the bedrock of most camera systems. However, the company (which has pretty much created every product under the sun from robot dogs to bouncing/dancing speakers) hasn’t made much progress beyond professional cameras, smartphone cameras, and the odd CCTV security camera (yes, they exist). The VLOG-001 puts that fact to rest by proposing a unique concept for a Sony-branded 3-axis handheld action/vlogging camera.

Designer: Priyanshu Jaiswal (Stang.ID)

Rendered on KeyShot: Click Here to Download Your Free Trial Now!

Designed during Advanced Design’s Offsite Cohort, the VLOG-001 is a culmination of all of Sony’s high-end consumer electronics products. It picks up on design cues from its mirrorless cameras, hi-fi audio players, TWS earbuds, and even the SRS-RA3000 – one of Sony’s most absurd high-end speakers.

Simply put, the VLOG-001 is Sony’s answer to the DJI Pocket, a category-defining handheld camera with its own built-in 3-axis stabilizer. Designed to bring DJI’s drone technology to the handheld format, the Pocket (formerly called the Osmo Pocket) set a new standard for handheld vlogging. While the company clearly enjoys the limelight in this category, sharing the vlogging space only with Insta360 (as GoPro fades into obscurity), the VLOG-001 tries to imagine a future where Sony has a dog in the handheld gimbal-cam market too.

The handheld camera is reminiscent of Sony’s professional cameras, and comes with the same faux leather textured grip seen on most DSLRs and mirrorless builds. The bronze-accented black design is a nod to the company’s high-end Walkman audio players, while the controls borrow directly from its camera and music-player interfaces. Knobs, buttons, and switches let you control the camera on the fly (even while recording), and the gimbal-mounted single lens captures either the recorder (for vloggers) or what’s ahead simply by flipping around 180°. The camera can also alternate between landscape and portrait-style shooting formats, and a fold-out display (reminiscent of the Handicam days) lets you view what you’re recording. The display is measurably larger than the one found on the DJI Pocket 2, and the VLOG-001 does it one better by also coming with a built-in flash for low-light recording.
