This graphene blanket keeps your body at the perfect temperature for the perfect sleep

It’s easy to take sleep for granted for the sake of productivity, at least until we come to the rather painful realization that sleep is actually critical for that very purpose. Getting a good night’s sleep, or any kind of sleep at all, sounds trivial, but there are many factors that can actually keep us from getting a well-deserved and restful slumber. One of the biggest factors is actually your body temperature, which can be too high or too low for ideal sleeping conditions. Blankets might be fine for cold nights, but they’ll make you even more uncomfortable during warmer seasons. Wouldn’t it be grand if you could have a single blanket for both occasions? That’s exactly what this innovative blanket promises, providing you with a smarter and more comfortable way to sleep so that you will have the energy you need to face the day anew.

HILU graphene-made blanket adjusts to your body temperature so you can sleep all night comfortably, regardless the season.

Our bodies need to be in a certain state to be able to truly sleep well, which is easier said than done. Memory foam pillows and advanced mattresses can only do so much in supporting a proper sleeping posture, but all those are for naught if your body is too cold or too hot. People typically use blankets to keep warm on cold nights but have fewer solutions for warmer ones. Additionally, not all blankets are comfortable in the first place, especially for people with more sensitive skin.

HILU is an innovative blanket that harnesses the power of a material famed for its temperature-regulating capabilities: graphene. By turning graphite into graphene fibers through wet spinning and then weaving these fibers into a whole blanket using Adaptex Technology, HILU is able to keep your body temperature at its best, regardless of the room’s temperature. It cools your body down when it’s too hot or keeps you warm when it’s too cold, paving the way for a perfect trip to dreamland.

Made of genuine graphene fibers, HILU blankets are the strongest and most durable in the market.

Thanks to those graphene fibers, HILU blankets are able to provide all-year-round comfort in bed. When you’re cold, the fibers absorb that coldness and let warm air out to keep you toasty. When you’re hot, on the other hand, it absorbs your body heat and dissipates it within the fiber, preventing the build-up of humidity, and keeping you dry and sweat-free all night long. It’s the perfect snuggle partner for anyone who just wants a comfy body temperature, including some of your furry friends at home.

HILU’s superpower doesn’t stop there, though. It’s gentle on the skin and has anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties that keep you comfortable and safe at the same time. And when it does get dirty, all you need is to wash it on gentle with cold water and then let it line dry or tumble dry on low. You won’t have to worry about being too rough with it either since the genuine graphene fibers create a fabric that’s almost as strong as steel.

Get that rejuvenating sleep you so rightly deserve with a blanket that adjusts to your body, not the other way around. For only $175, you can get a queen-size HILU blanket that will put your body temperature in that perfect state for sleeping, making those restless nights feel like a fading dream.

1. Cheat Sheets Dividers

While this looks like something you would see in a viral TikTok video, the Cheat Sheets are the cooking hack we have all been looking for! The beauty of cooking in an oven is that you place your ingredients and you’re done, no need to keep stirring or checking on the food. The con however is the resultant meal is a medley of food – some overcooked, some slightly raw with a bite in it – which is granted given how each food has its own cooking time. That was the case, until now! Made from silicone, the Cheat Sheets provide individual, removable containers that sit on your tray allowing each food to be cooked for just the right time. Once that particular part of your meal is cooked, reach into your oven with mittens and bring it out, allowing the rest of the cooking process to go on seamlessly. And for those of us who hate scrubbing at the dry, sticky residue left on the baking tray – using Cheat Sheet keeps your tray clean and being easy to clean themselves, no scrubbing required. 4. NanoFoamer V2

There’s something about the coffee made by baristas that instantly hits the right spot! Maybe it’s the velvety texture or the frothy foam…but something about it completely beats the cuppa we make at home. If you want to be your own barista, then the NanoFoamer V2 is what you need. It is the only AA battery-operated handheld milk foamer that lets you make latte-art-worthy microfoam milk at home. Unlike the older NanoFoamer, the V2 has clip-on NanoScreens, which basically means they’ve ditched the pressure fit system for a satisfying snap-fit, which provides a stronger hold on the impeller. The extremely crucial impeller is also replaceable and created from sturdy Polycarbonate material. With a more powerful motor, stronger construction, and all-new internal engineering, the V2 beats its predecessor, by preparing microfoam milk with super fine bubbles, and a wonderful velvety texture. The NanoFoamer V2 also works great with non-dairy milk alternatives such as – soy, coconut, and oat!

5. Playful Palm Grater

In the list of cooking chores that go into meal prep everyday, grating is not something I would place high on the list, until now! Fitting securely in the palm of your hand, this minimal grater will add joy to your life. Commercially available graters are big, bulky and space consuming with a lot of grating space around the edges getting wasted and lets not even mention the danger to wandering fingers. Made out of a single piece of aluminium alloy, this grater resembles a fun piece of a coloured memo pad while it hangs on our kitchen walls. The angled corner rests the grater against your finger securely while you grate into the hole-free design, leaving behind no food waste. The result? A perfectly modern and minimal addition to your kitchen.

7. Frankfurter Brett Kitchen Workbench

The Frankfurter Brett is much more than your ordinary chopping board – it introduces a completely new and improved way of cooking. The Frankfurter functions more as a workbench than a chopping board. The board has neat holes drilled on its side, which allow you to slot metal brackets into them and suspend a row of containers on the front, with another row placed behind them. The containers at the back can be used to store ingredients, while the front section of the board can be used for actually chopping. The chopped-up food can then be transferred into the front left containers, while all the waste and leftovers can be discarded into the front right containers. There’s also a nifty section to place your tablet in if you’re following a recipe online while cooking. The Frankfurter Brett creates an efficient and organized system that simplifies and fastens up one of the most tedious parts of cooking – chopping!

I hate watching a good bottle of wine go to waste, simply because it wasn’t consumed completely at a party, and had to face the horrors of oxidization for the next couple of days. Refined, and sophisticated, the Eto wine decanter exudes a modern and clean vibe with its stainless steel and glass structure, and rose-gold finish. You simply decant the wine into Eto, press down on the neck of the bottle, and watch as a piston valve lowers down and meets the level of the wine. This creates an air-tight seal inside the decanter, preventing the wine from oxidizing and keeping it fresh for almost 7 days! You can use Eto to directly pour out the wine as well, the smart decanter functions as a wine bottle as well.

Create furniture with this experimental wooden clip system

If you asked me to build a piece of furniture from scratch, I probably would not be able to make something that will actually hold together. If I could tape or clip things together, then I can probably come up with a decent piece although whether it will actually hold together to be functional is another matter. But there are furniture designers and makers have been experimenting with other ways to build furniture aside from the usual nails, glues, screws, and other electric tools.

Designer: ClipHut

A German design studio has now come up with an experimental system where you can clip furniture together, just like you would clip a helmet to your head with a chinstrap. They’ve been researching and experimenting for five years already and now they’re finally showcasing the result at the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. What we’re seeing is a wooden hut and a freestanding bar that uses their wooden clip system and all you need is a rubber hammer and your two hands.

The system consists of horizontal and vertical planks that are made from OSB or oriented strand board. The horizontal ones have evenly shaped holes while the vertical ones have edges that are shaped like clips. The two will be able to interlock at different points so think of it like a modular lego set that you can put together, only this time you’re building actual furniture and maybe later on bigger structures. Their original prototype was a shelter but for now, they’re focused on building furniture sets.

The next step will be launching a furniture kit so you’ll be able to create different pieces of furniture, aside from the ones they’re displaying at the Dutch Design Week. A kit will be able to make a bookshelf, a TV stand, or a corner unit. It is more of a DIY kind of kit although there is an instruction manual that you can use. The more you play around with it, the more you can build your own custom furniture and maybe eventually a full house.

Check out this MagSafe-ready Apple Magic Charger that never made it into production

The introduction of MagSafe has made wireless charging snap on the iPhone range. Therefore, a slew of MagSafe chargers in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and form factors rock the market today. In this sea of options, a product has appeared online which is believed to be an Apple MagSafe charger that never made it into production. The images of this rarity, shared on the internet, have some semblance to the iPhone Lightning Dock, then why was it canned?

The images first shared by Apple collector TheBlueMister on Twitter have been doing rounds on the internet over the past few days. The said Twitter account is now suspended (not guessing these images made content violation), but since, a few other collectors in Asia have managed to go hands-on with the design validation test (DVT) versions of the charger in question.

Designer: Apple

When plugged into a Mac, it is believed that the device was identified as Apple Magic Charger. If there was some magic in the metallic puck, it would have definitely been made out of the company’s production lines instead of being abandoned altogether. So, what’s this mysterious Apple product really all about?

Looking somewhat like the iPhone Lightning Dock, the Apple Magic Charger is based on a metal stand, which features a metallic puck integrated within its square rim. The device is likely made of anodized aluminum while the round charging area within is rubberized. Interestingly the aluminum stand allows the charger to be pushed into a vertical position to charge the connected iPhone.

Reportedly, and as suggested by the available images, the Magic Charger was designed to keep the connected iPhone upright and in a horizontal position; perhaps this limitation of use could have been a reason the magic was never done outside of the Apple production lines!

Jaqui Seerman updates interiors of LA bank building for Hotel Per La

Mirror-lined arched gallery

A new hotel occupies 1920s bank headquarters in Downtown LA, where Jaqui Seerman refreshed public spaces to include a botanical-themed lounge and a mirror-lined arched gallery.

Hotel Per La is housed in the neoclassical Giannini Building, built in 1922 as the headquarters for the Bank of Italy, and takes the place of the NoMad Los Angeles which closed its doors in March 2021.

Its 10,000 square feet (930 square metres) of public and event spaces have been refreshed by local interior designer Jaqui Seerman, who used the 12-storey property’s Italian connection to inform her updates.

“A nod to the building’s storied beginning as a bank for the people, the ‘Per La’ name translates to ‘for the’ in Italian,” said the hotel.

“[The bank’s] founder, Amadeo Pietro Giannini, believed in the dignity and abilities of those commonly overlooked, signifying the hotel’s inclusive spirit and name, essentially meaning ‘for Los Angeles, and people like you’.”

Demarcated by a pale blue awning, the hotel’s entrance has been relocated from 7th Street to Olive Street, leaving the doric columns across the grand facade fully visible.

Through the doors, guests find themselves in a double-height lounge filled with plants and comfy chairs covered in botanical patterns.

An arched gallery lined with mirrors leads to the lobby, situated in what was once the main banking hall.

In the reception area, a custom-made curved plaster front desk influenced by linen fabric was designed by Voila Creative Studio, while a hand-painted tapestry that hangs in the niches behind was produced by LA muralist Jessalyn Brooks.

Event spaces range from a second-floor courtyard for private outdoor dinners, to larger spaces for up to 850 people.

Dining options within the hotel include Per L’Ora, which serves Italian cuisine and features a light colour palette across curvaceous design elements influenced by the early 2000s.

“The bar of the restaurant acts as a dramatic centerpiece, with a custom-made marble top in shades of green, grey, and white, and globe-shaped light fixtures, while custom white plasterwork on the front of the bar offers a new sense of texture,” said the hotel operators.

Adjacent to the restaurant is a casual cafe modelled on a Venetian coffee shop, serving beverages, pastries and snacks.

On the rooftop, Bar Clara offers cocktails for poolside lounging and hosts live performances with the LA skyline as a backdrop.

The 241 guest rooms and suites have retained much of the aesthetic created by French architect Jacques Garcia for the NoMad, referencing the restored gold and blue ceiling in the lobby.

This magical wreath carries the stars to bring some sparkle to your room

It’s that time of year again when many people start decorating their homes with sparkly stuff and an abundance of lights that are sure to make your electricity bill spike for a month or so. Of course, you don’t really need any excuse or occasion to spruce up your interiors, but there are admittedly some pieces of decor that are more appropriate for certain seasons than others. Conversely, some designs are also timeless, whether we associate them with certain holidays or not, and they add a certain flavor to your home no matter the time of year. This wreath, for example, might easily be associated with the Christmas season, but the almost magical experience of seeing heavenly bodies in your living room is something that will never grow old.

Designer: SPARKLE

Click Here to Buy Now: $84 $99 (15% off at checkout). Hurry, sitewide Pre-Black Friday sale ends Nov 21st.

It might be puzzling for some people how starry lights are quickly associated with December holidays. After all, the stars shine all year round, and their timeless beauty captivates and inspires anyone who looks up at a clear night sky. Of course, not all night skies show the stars in their mystical majesty, so having them available in your home at any time could be a great idea to add not only light but also joy to the space.

Granted, just having small lights that resemble stars would probably be a bit boring, so the Sparkle Wreath adds a bit of artistic flair to the composition. On the one hand, you have large polystyrene balls that seemingly capture starlight inside their forms. On the other hand, you also have a lush fir tree branch that holds these magical spheres in place, as if suspending them in the air like luminous sprites resting on the branches of a tree.

These two elements provide an almost perfect harmony of complements, one earthbound, the other heavenward. The verdant branch, carefully arranged by a florist, provides an ideal backdrop that makes the yellowish stars really stand out. The starry globes, on the other hand, cast a gentle yet sublime glow on the greens, giving it an otherworldly appearance that will enchant you and your visitors at every glance.

As if that weren’t enough, the small LEDs that give each sphere its light creates a special hologram that changes the light inside. After all, stars flicker and glow in different ways, making them more mysterious and alluring. Likewise, this starry wreath offers a delightful display of light and foliage that will complement any motif you might have going, bringing enjoyment and perhaps even a little piece of happiness, no matter the time or season.

Listen Up

Folk, synth-pop, jazz, rock, electronic and more new music this week

Jessica Winter: Funk This Up

Jessica Winter shares a glimpse of her upcoming EP Limerence with the new single “Funk This Up.” The catchy, ’80s-inflected pop song grooves upon hard synths, haunting falsettos and heavy breathing. Lyrically, it sees the artist and producer conversing with herself as she oscillates between opposing identities, which the accompanying Ella Margolin-directed music video delightfully captures, as it becomes as unconventional as the banger.

black midi: Sugar/Tzu (Live Fire)

Today black midi—the English band composed of Geordie Greep, Cameron Picton, Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin and Morgan Simpson—release Live Fire, a live version of their latest album Hellfire available exclusively as a limited vinyl at Rough Trade. Within lies “Sugar/Tzu,” a gorgeously chaotic collision of jazz and rock. It opens (in place of the studio version’s spoken intro) with snarling guitar before giving way to soothing keys, only to erupt into a rambunctious, frenzied riff. Listening to the track feels like a dizzying rollercoaster with a thrill that thankfully never ceases.

Weval: Forever

Amsterdam-based electronic duo Weval (aka Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte Albers) floats a melodic vocal layer atop a feel-good electric soundscape in their new single, “Forever.” “The way in which many ideas from us come together is by combining different demos with each other,” Weval says in a statement about the dynamic song. “So we had made this beat that became an acid DJ-ish track, and recorded the vocal for a different demo. We ended up sampling our own work and felt it just clicked and fit together in this way. It’s so fun to mash up ideas that in themselves had a completely different life and distinct energy to them. So it feels sometimes we end up with something that we wouldn’t be able to do from one linear process.”

Christina Galisatus: I Want To Know Her

LA-based composer and pianist Christina Galisatus has released a resplendent new folk-infused chamber jazz track, “I Want To Know Her,” drawn from her forthcoming debut album, Without Night. For the composition, Galisatus tapped Erin Bentlage for vocals and brought in top-tier musical talent that includes Michael Blasky on tenor saxophone, Steven Lugerner on bass clarinet, Brandon Bae on guitar, Joshua Crumbly on bass and Zev Shearn-Nance on drums. “The music that I’ve always been drawn to, whether it’s listening to music or performing and composing, has always been music that just feels beautiful to me,” Galisatus says in a statement; it’s a sentiment that reflects the values of her new single.

Listen Up is published every Sunday and rounds up the new music we found throughout the week. Hear the year so far on our Spotify channel. Hero image courtesy of black midi

Hyundai electric UTV is a utilitarian UTV with potent off-roading capability

Hyundai has projected its modern design language onto the concept cars and future prototypes which are bold and non-trivial. Now a designer envisions the shape of an electric utility terrain vehicle for the brand.

The UTV carries a Cyberpunk vibe while retaining the rugged, modular and simple body aesthetics. Perhaps, the ideal four-wheeled electric vehicle for all your urban skirmishes, as well as, adventure rides to the Rockies on the odd weekend.

Designer: Roman Ignatowski

This four-door utilitarian vehicle is perfect for fun rides on a bright sunny day thanks to the open Jeep-like design. While I would have wished for beefier tires on the UTV, the designer manages to convey the minimalistic design with enough scope for after-market modifications in case you want to hit the dirt trails. It’s more like a modernized buggy that got a timely evolution boost.

There are plenty of modularity options that give freedom to configure the vehicle as per need. Everything right from the roof, hood, and interior space can be micro-managed depending on the needs, and type of activity. The UTV can be a beach buggy one day, and an open Jeep heading to the mountain top the very other day. All the seats except the driving one can be folded and out of sight for hauling cargo if the need be.

The electric motor sits on the front under the hood top, and the section can also be customized to have solar panels. The roof can also be modified to have solar panels sit on top for improved battery power storage. There is no word yet on the performance rating, range, or battery storage capacity yet since it’s just a concept for now. That said, having this Hyundai UTV roll out on the streets will be a refreshing change amongst the monotonous concepts that more or less preach similar aesthetics.

Llabb creates The Hermitage cabin overlooking Italian mountains

Person on terrace of wooden cabin

Italian architecture studio Llabb has perched an off-grid wooden cabin for “contemplation and introspection” on the edge of a hill overlooking the Trebbia valley near Genoa.

Surrounded by the dramatic landscape of the Apennine Mountains, The Hermitage is just 12 square metres in size and contains a single space designed to be anything from a secluded studio to a yoga retreat.

Llabb has created The Hermitage cabin near Genoa

Llabb‘s design for the off-grid structure is informed by Scandinavian cabins and Japanese teahouses.

Sitting atop four wood and steel supports resting on sandstone beds, it has a modular wooden structure crafted from Okoume marine plywood in Llabb’s own carpentry workshop.

Person looking out from The Hermitage cabin

According to the studio, this structure ensures a minimal impact on the landscape and is “easily scalable and adaptable into different compositions”.

“The basicness of construction, the minimal impact on the land and the use of natural materials that can be easily sourced locally enable a respectful installation in natural contexts,” explained Llabb co-founder Luca Scardulla.

“These Hermitages put human beings back in touch with nature by lightening the anthropization load that marks all building activities.”

The Hermitage cabin extends over the edge of the hill with a full-height glazed end, where a sliding door leads onto a small wooden terrace sheltered by a retractable fabric awning.

Designed to be completely off-grid, it features photovoltaic panels on its roof, as well as a composting toilet and water canisters in the bathroom.

Inside, a long countertop runs the entire length of the wall on the right of the plywood-lined space. Located beneath a letterbox window that frames the tree canopy, it is designed to be used as either a seat or desk containing storage space.

Opposite the countertop is a small seating area and a fold-out bed that provides space to rest, next to a small bathroom at the back of the cabin.

“Minimal and flexible, with the expansive glass wall facing the terrace, the space feels light and contemplative,” said Llabb co-founder Federico Robbiano.

“The interplay between different levels offers the possibility to better manage storage spaces and technical compartments, while contributing to the definition of a graceful atmosphere,” added Robbiano.

Scardulla and Robbiano founded Llabb in 2013, originally as a carpentry workshop before expanding into architecture.

Prior to creating The Hermitage, the studio combined two apartments in Genoa to create bright, open interiors that subtly reference the area’s maritime heritage.

House in Hampshire

English cottage, UK, by Invisible Studio

Architecture practice Invisible Studio added a double-pitched extension to this cottage that is located on the borders of Hampshire and Surrey in England.

Exposed concrete accents contrast with rectilinear sliding glass doors in the living space, which cantilevers over the sliding patio doors below with the support of a concrete chimney.

“All the materials are fair-faced so had to be perfectly made,” explained studio founder Piers Taylor. “Nothing is covered up and everything exposed.”

Made of Sand, UK, by Studio Weave

Architecture office Studio Weave designed a wooden extension to a stone cottage in Devon’s Blackdown Hills in the English countryside, which was created as a creative workspace for its owners and visiting artists.

Called Made of Sand, the extension’s interior is defined by built-in timber window seats and wall storage that is framed by large glass windows.

“The contrast between materials, old and new, in and out, are foregrounded to create a distinct sense of rest and relaxation in the new spaces,” said studio director Je Ahn.

Muskoka Cottage, Canada, by Studio Paolo Ferrari

Named after its location in Canada’s Muskoka region, this cottage interior features exposed finishes informed by the surrounding natural forests and the area’s geological details.

These include sandy-hued, Douglas fir exposed ceilings and large slabs of granite that make up various statement islands throughout the home, as well as a large fireplace in the living space.

“The granite is coarse-grained and hard,” noted Studio Paolo Ferrari. “It references the minerality of the site and imbues the interiors with a sense of ruggedness.”

The Marlboro Music Cottages, USA, by HGA Architects and Engineers

The Marlboro Music Cottages are a series of cabin-style dwellings by HGA Architects and Engineers (HGA) for musicians staying in New England over the summer during the Marlboro Music School and Festival, an annual event.

HGA took cues from the single-storey boxy dwellings with gabled roofs that populate Cape Cod for the cottages’ architecture. Cedar plank cladding and pitched roofs were used to embrace the homes’ natural setting.

Inside, the cottage interior features exposed timber ceilings, pine-sheathed walls and slate flooring, adding to this pared-back approach.

A double-height living space offers views of the surrounding Hamptons at this cottage by architecture studio Birdseye Design, which is wrapped in thin wooden slats that nod to local traditional buildings.

Eclectic geometric furniture makes up dining and living areas that anchor the west side of the property and open out onto an outdoor dining space.

“Operable glass walls open to a large stone terrace off the living room and the kitchen opens to a wood-slatted, pergola-covered porch,” said Birdseye.

Captain Kelly's Cottage by John Wardle Architects

Captain Kelly’s Cottage, Tasmania, John Wardle Architects

Australian studio John Wardle Architects has repaired this weatherboard cottage in Tasmania, which originally belonged to its architect, harbourmaster Captain Kelly, in the 1840s.

Furniture created from materials left over at the end of the project’s renovation feature in its updated design, while a focus on wooden interiors maintains a sense of the dwelling’s history.

“Over 175 years there had been many unsympathetic alterations to the small cottage,” said the studio. “Part of our work involved the removal of these non-original works, to respectfully return the cottage to its original form.”
