BIG to transform Jordan port terminal into solar-powered community hub

Danish architecture BIG has unveiled its masterplan for the refurbishment of the Aqaba Container Terminal at Jordan‘s only port to transform it into a hub for the local community.

The terminal masterplan will involve the renovation of existing facilities, alongside the introduction of community training centres and public parks.

The Aqaba Container Terminal project is being developed by BIG in collaboration with the port operating company APM Terminal for the shipping company Maersk.

According to BIG, its design will also focus on the provision of solar power, ensuring the masterplan aligns with APM Terminal’s “ambition to optimize and decarbonize the port”.

“Born out of APM Terminal’s ambition to optimize and decarbonize the port and surrounding logistics, BIG has developed a spatial framework for the green transformation of Aqaba Container Terminal in Jordan,” BIG explained.

“The framework envisions ports as once again becoming a center of urban life, that connects land and sea through growth and innovation.”

The first element of the masterplan is the refurbishment of the existing Aqaba Container Terminal terminal. This will involve updating and expanding the shipping yards with “state-of-the-art” technology that is hoped to improve capacity, efficiency and comfort for workers.

BIG also plans to introduce solar canopies that will provide clean electricity for the terminal, as well as its electric cranes, vehicles and charging stations.

Another key part of the masterplan is the Aqaba’s Logistics Village – an area that will be introduced to provide local businesses with trade opportunities at the port and to help boost the wider economy.

Here, there will also be centres for the training of logistics professionals.

It is also hoped to improve the efficiency of operations

Completing the masterplan will be a series of community and recreation focused on connecting the “port’s community and natural environment”, such as public parks.

“The framework merges different strategic approaches at regional scale, starting from the terminal refurbishment, expanding to the logistics functions in the immediate surroundings, and lastly, connecting to the wider port’s community and natural environment,” concluded BIG.

BIG is an architecture studio with studios in Copenhagen, New York, London and Barcelona that was founded by Danish architect Bjarke Ingels in 2005.

Elsewhere, the studio is currently developing Masterplan Esbjerg Strand, an innovation hub surrounded by water in Denmark, and a “flood-proof” floating city in South Korea.

Another leading architect currently working on designing a port terminal is MAD. Named the Cuntan International Cruise Centre, it will comprise a string of orange buildings modelled on gantry cranes.

Symmetry and reflection define Qatar desert installation by Olafur Eliasson

A rendering of a circular installation in a desert

Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson has created an immersive installation named Shadows Travelling on the Sea of the Day comprised of twenty circular structures during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar .

Created in collaboration with Qatar Museums, Eliasson‘s installation joins over 100 commissioned artworks installed across Qatar that are on view across the country over the course of the tournament.

Situated near UNESCO World Heritage Site Al Zubarah, which is in the northwest of Qatar, the installation was designed to “bring light to the significance” of the heritage site.

Shadows Travelling on the Sea of the Day is an installation near Al Zubarah

“Shadows Travelling on the Sea of the Day, 2022, is an invitation to resync with the planet,” explained Eliasson.

“It is a celebration of everything being in and moving through the desert site north of Doha at the time of your visit – animals, plants, and human beings; stories, traditions, and cultural artefacts; wind, sunlight, air and shimmering heat,” he continued.

“The installation of these important artworks brings to light the significance of Qatar’s nearby heritage sites, which Qatar Museums is responsible for preserving and protecting,” added Qatar Museums.

Some structures have mirrored roofs that reflect the desert sand

Visitors can navigate their way through the steel and fibreglass rings and stand beneath the shelters, where they’ll be able to see their own reflection in mirrored panels on the underside of their tops. The mirrors also reflect the surrounding sandy desert.

“On arriving at the installation, looking up at the mirrored undersides, you will come to realise that you are, in fact, looking down – at the earth and at yourself,” said Qatar Museums.

“Shadows Travelling on the Sea of the Day continues the Danish-Icelandic artist’s longstanding exploration into the interplay of human perception and the natural world.”

Hollow ringed structures and sheltered structures
The installation is comprised of twenty rings

Eliasson arranged 10 of the covered shelters in the middle of the installation to look like a symmetrical five-pointed star face when viewed from above – referencing the designs found in medieval Islamic patterns.

Other structures were formed of two interconnected rings or simple single rings that are fixed to the ground.

“The principles behind such patterns were recently discovered by mathematicians in the West, may have informed some of the sophisticated designs found in Islamic cultures since medieval times,” explained Qatar Museums.

According to Eliasson, the installation created “a sea of interconnections” – hence the name Shadows Travelling on the Sea of the Day – between individuals and the landscape.

“Above and below, sand envelops you, together with anyone else sharing the space,” he said. “It is a kind of reality check of your connectedness to the ground,” Eliasson added.

“The mirrors connect and perfect what is physically distinct and partial, linking the actual surroundings with the reflected space and creating a sea of interconnections.”

Qatar has invested large amounts into its artistic program in order to attract visitors to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which runs until 18 December. Dezeen rounded up 10 cultural buildings completed in Qatar ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

Meanwhile, architectural photographer Iwan Baan photographed a selection of public artworks that are on display in the middle eastern country, by artists and designers including Faye Toogood and Richard Serra.

The country has been widely criticised for its human rights record and the conditions experienced by migrant workers in the run up to the World Cup. The Guardian reported that 6,500 migrant workers had died in the country since it won the right to host the tournament in 2010. Although according to football’s governing body FIFA there have only been 37 deaths connected to the construction of the World Cup stadiums.

Shadows Travelling on the Sea of the Day is currently on show in Al Zubara. See Dezeen Events Guide for an up-to-date list of architecture and design events taking place around the world.

This tiny smart home monitor keeps an ear out for the most important sounds at home

Smart home security today is mostly about things we can see, from the people approaching our doorsteps to the things that go bump in the dark at night. While that might be the easiest way to identify visible things, it hardly encompasses all the things that could happen inside the house, whether you’re there or not. More often than not, the things that matter most can only be heard, whether it’s the cry of an infant or the shattering of a window. For these events, smart home cameras are really not enough, especially considering their limited presence. Fortunately, the solution is both simple yet also ingenious, as this small and rather cute smart home monitor proves.

Designer: Earzz

Click Here to Buy Now: $72 $100 (30% off). Hurry, only 279/400 left!

Some smart home security cameras do have audio detection that alerts you when something’s happening at home, even when you’re far away. It’s an all-or-nothing deal, however, and leaves it up to you to figure out what’s really happening out of sight. There’s also often a limit to the number of cameras you install around the house, often directly at security-critical spots only. All in all, these smart devices can’t cover the whole breadth of sounds around the house, especially the ones that you need to be aware of.

Place your Earzz devices where you want to listen for sounds.

Earzz offers a smarter way to keep your home safe and secure in a tiny package no bigger than the palm of your hand. That makes it easy to put it anywhere it’s needed, whether beside a window or on a kitchen countertop, without calling too much attention to itself. Both its size and its price make it possible to have a whole army of these around your house, becoming your virtual ears that are always on alert for important sounds, from the whistling of a kettle to the opening of the pet door.

In the Hallway – Doorbells, knocking, mail slots, window smash, and letterboxes amongst others.

In the Kitchen – Appliance beeps, water running, timers, alarms, whistles & latches and even fire and smoke alarms for added peace of mind.

In the Nursery – Crying, coughing, baby gates opening or closing, offering peace of mind for parents.

What makes Earzz truly special, however, is the expanding library of sounds that feeds into its AI, allowing it to identify and listen only to specific sounds. Each monitor can be set to be attentive to a specific set of sounds, allowing you to be more precise and more efficient in listening to what’s happening around it. Once it hears that sound, it fires off a notification to your phone instantly, even when you’re not at home, including information such as the type of sound and when it was heard. All of these settings, of course, can be tuned and controlled from Earzz’s mobile app, available for both iOS and Android devices.

Earzz AI recognizes sounds NOT speech.

Since this smart home monitor listens only to sounds and not human speech, Earzz has the privacy advantage over smart speakers that need to be constantly attentive to what humans nearby are saying. Once sound clips are identified, the sound clips as recorded are automatically deleted from the device. Earzz also uses advanced security and encryption to ensure that any data that goes to and from the device is safe from prying eyes and ears.

We live in a world that’s full not only of sights but also of sounds, some of which are more important than others when it comes to home security. Rather than relying simply on what a few security cameras can tell you, the Earzz smart home monitor truly keeps an ear out for the sounds that matter to you. For just $71, which includes the Earzz Standard subscription upgrade for free for Super Early Bird backers on Kickstarters, you can have the peace of mind that comes with knowing what is happening at home, even if you’re not around to hear it.

Detroit’s New Affordable Housing and Health Center for LGBTQ+ People

The Ruth Ellis Center is a Detroit non-profit dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ youth. In October, they opened a permanent affordable housing and health facility for young queer people. The 46,000-square-foot building was carefully designed by Chicago architecture firm LBBA to cater to the unique needs of the community, from offering health and wellness services to addressing safety concerns. While maintaining pride for its residents, the building is equipped with heightened security measures, an important feature given rampant attacks on queer spaces like the recent shooting at Colorado Springs’ Club Q. The center also focuses on the need for community, incorporating different public spaces capable of hosting balls, fashion shows and other creative events, as well as an open-floor plan to invite the wider community and a new pharmacy as requested by neighbors. Even its materials are community-oriented, comprising details and finishes inspired by the local architectural style. Learn more about the vital space at Bloomberg.

Transforming electric bike goes from a performance ride to cargo carrier in a jiffy

Urban mobility of the future is majorly going to rely on electric two-wheelers with the freedom of shape-shifting aesthetics. The TRISO Electric Motorcycle is a good example of this longing for an adaptable commuter that is good for any life scenario.

The transforming electric bike is targeted towards the younger lot, generally aged 20 -30 who want to showcase their passion for driving while being considerate to the planet. TRISO has got three riding modes – Eco, Road and Explore – each one leveraging a different shape and riding aesthetics. The switch happens in a matter of seconds, thereby, perfect for any real-time requirements.

Designer: Laurence LAI and 羅 靖軒

Transformation of the bike is perfectly in sync with the shape-changing fabric for a seamless transition. So, the bike goes from a shopping mode in the city superstore to a sports racer without anyone ever noticing. The storage mode is really useful when the need arises, and when not required; retracts back for a slimmer, muscular profile that’ll appeal to the younger lot. The space can be used to store backpacks, helmets, or medium-sized luggage too. High riding position means, it can be taken for a spin on the dirt trails, and agility can be a real trait pro riders can explore.

The 100 percent zero-emission bike gets a simple geometric shape for user-friendly aesthetics which aids in aerodynamic drag reduction too. In the performance mode, it can go up to a top speed of 75 km/h, electronically limited for driving safety. The power delivery of 10kW (14 hp) has enough thump to satiate one’s desire for speed. In the mixed city driving mode, TRISO has a range of 130 km.

The current speed and the battery range are displayed on the cool HUD which is quite unique in its own right. A lot of work has been put into the color combination which really elevates the futuristic feel of the ride. Those cool orange and grey hues mixed with the white on the body frame have absolutely got me drooling over.

The raised pad protects the stash from water and splashing while a ridge on the flower balances joints. It is available with either a yellow or lilac flower.

This shoe styler concept helps you put your best foot forward every day

A good number of people pay very close attention to the shoes they wear, day in and day out. They make sure the shoes are not only comfortable but also stylish, matching whatever look you might have going for that day. A bit ironically, however, most people don’t give their shoes a second thought after taking them off. Most of us take special care of the clothes we wear but are content to just leave shoes by the door, in the closet, or anywhere convenient. The lack of care for footwear, however, will have very negative consequences for our feet down the road, so this shoe styler appliance concept tries to envision an easy and convenient way to make sure you’re always starting the day fresh from head to toe.

Designer: Yeounju Lee

Given how we use them, our shoes are bound to get dirtier and more worn out than our clothes. Despite that fact, few of us probably think of proper shoe care beyond airing them out once in a while. That sad state of footwear comes to bite us back, however, when we start to feel uncomfortable in our own shoes, not to mention get irritated or smelly feet from our beloved sneakers. Just like any chore, it isn’t a matter of just laziness but more because of the lack of tools that make such a task easy and efficient.

Shoe styler appliances are starting to enter into people’s consciousness for these exact reasons. We are already making it easier to take care of our clothes using technology, so it’s only fair and perhaps long overdue that shoes finally get the same treatment. Day starter is such a concept and it focuses on not just storing shoes properly but also cleaning them to keep them in tip-top shape for as long as possible.

At first glance, you wouldn’t even be able to tell that the appliance is designed for shoe care. It looks more like a short cabinet with a stylized ridged door. Behind that door is indeed a sort of storage, one that’s designed to keep shoes sanitized and dry. This would help prolong the life of footwear, depending on the type of material, of course. There are different lengths of “sticks” that either hang your shoes up or keep boots straight so that they don’t get deformed over time.

Day starter, however, isn’t just simply storage for shoes. Using the appliance actually starts with the slide-out tray that you step on when you’ve returned for the day. The details of the design are a bit murky, but at some point, the shoes are washed and dried to clean them before storage. There are even bins for water that you’ll have to fill and eventually empty.

1

The shoe storage also functions as a shelf, particularly for things you might need when going out. It’s the perfect place to put down keys that you’ll pick up again the next day, turning it into that one place you’ll never forget. The design admittedly has some limitations, such as the number of shoes that can be stored inside at the same time. It does, however, bring to mind the importance of caring for footwear, especially given how we critically depend on them to go places.

Ennead Architects and Rockwell Group unveil food distribution centre in Brooklyn

Interior of food-distribution centre in New York

New York-based studios Ennead Architects and Rockwell Group have converted a 19th-century train warehouse into the headquarters for a charitable organisation in Brooklyn‘s Sunset Park neighbourhood.

The studios transformed a block-long train repair shop in Brooklyn into a headquarters and distribution centre for the charitable organisation City Harvest, turning it into a bright and open space by modernising the original structure.

City Harvest new building facade
Ennead Architects worked with Rockwell Group to design a headquarters for City Harvest

Ennead Architects led the external and internal redesign while Rockwell Group designed an event space and a test kitchen for the facility, which is called the Cohen Community Food Rescue Center.

The historic elements of the facade were kept largely intact by the redesign, with most of the interventions occurring in the long warehouse-like spaces of the interior.

The structure was a repair depot for a railway

“As we see it, the most sustainable building is the one that is already there, so our design approach was informed by the existing potential already within this building, which we revitalized and filled with daylight to create an open and welcoming environment for all,” said Ennead Architects partner Richard Olcott.

Inside, Ennead opened up the 150,000 square-foot (13,935 metres) structure and uncovered features such as clerestory windows that had been closed over.

Office for City Harvest with modern lights
Ennead Architects was in charge of the majority of the office and distribution spaces

The two-storey structure now houses open-concept workspaces alongside spaces for the collection and distribution of food, with offices on the top floor and distribution areas on the bottom floor.

Throughout, Ennead Architects added steel screens and other partitions, and the studio also restored some of the tree-like wooden support columns throughout the space.

Much of the timber framework of the original structure was maintained

In the entryway, a steel staircase was installed to provide access to the upper level, where the office program has workspaces, lounges and a large gathering space, with custom graphics on some of the walls.

A number of energy-saving upgrades were also added to the structure. These included hookups, radiant heating and cooling, and electric charging stations.

Rockwell Group was responsible for designing a modern test kitchen where the organisation can host chefs and gatherings.

The kitchen was designed for visitors to be able to watch the food being prepared, and the warm space consists of reclaimed wood from barns, terracotta and steel elements.

This area leads to restored archways that open into an event space with reclaimed-oak flooring and what the studio called “immersive wainscoting”.

Rockwell Group also installed a roof terrace to complete the program. Here, an outdoor kitchen and lounge area were furnished with items made from recycled milk jugs.

International architecture studio Ware Malcomb served as the architect of record on the project and provided designs for the logistic spaces in the build, including the loading docks and food-storage systems.

City Harvest is known for rescuing food waste and redistributing it to New Yorkers in need, and in a year distributes upwards of 75 million pounds of food.

Rockwell Group also designed an events space

“As the need for emergency food continues to stay far above pre-pandemic levels, our new, sustainable headquarters will help us meet the need in our city – one day, one meal, one New Yorker at a time,” said City Harvest CEO Jilly Stephens.

Other projects that use older structures include the transformation of a Victorian warehouse into an office structure in London by Squire and Partners and the conversion of a 16th-century clergy house in Spain into a holiday home by Atienza Maure Arquitectos.
